"I pay more for utility bills at my house"
Robert Neves, Co-Owner - 37kW PV system, Whaling City Transit Co.
The Truth On Solar Savings
A perspective from the co- owner of Whaling City Transit on his 37kW PV system
Robert Neves, co-owner of Westport-based Whaling City Transit sees first-hand, month after month, the real time savings a solar renewable energy system can provide a business. The family-owned business has made a committment to utilize "green" technology wherever possible in its business operations.
Whaling City Transport has lowered its energy costs from the range of $500 - $900 per month to just $500 a year!
But how did they do it?
Through their decision to generate their own clean power from the 37kW solar system designed and installed by Beaumont Solar.
"I pay more for utility bills at my home," says Mr. Neves.
"My thinking is that you are never going to see utility costs go down, so if I can minimize the need to buy power, all the better."

Solar Math - Determining the Payback Period
SRECs, Payback Period, Rebates, Tax Credits...
But in plain terms, what does it all mean?
Well, let's take a look at the following example, assuming a company purchases a $100,000 PV solar system:
Cost: $100,000
less
30% ITC $ 30,000
50% Depreciation 17,552
balance $ 52,448
Next, let's assume the company had an electric bill before solar of 3,000 kWh per month at a rate of $0.16 per kWh.
Annual Savings & Revenue from Solar
Power Savings $ 5,760
SRECs Revenue 10,080
(at $0.28/kWh)
Depreciation 4,388
Annual Total: $ 20,228
Payback Period
= Balance / Annual Savings
= $52,448 / $20,228 per yr
= 2.6 years

City of New Bedford Receives 5 Solar Arrays for the Holidays

| Abraham Lincoln Elementary - New Bedford, MA |
Beaumont Solar has completed the first five rooftop PV systems of the City of New Bedford's historic solar initiative just in time for the holidays. Mayor Scott Lang officially announced on October 21, 2011 the City of New Bedford's signed PPA (power purchase agreement) with ConEdison Solutions for up to 10MW of solar renewable energy systems to be implemented citywide.
As a vertically integrated company, Beaumont Solar designed the systems, and completed the permitting and installation of all five systems in just under 2 months. The systems ready to be energized are the Abraham Lincoln Elementary School, Keith Middle School, Normandin Middle School, the city's Department of Public Infrastructure building and the Community Development Center Gymnasium.
| Normandin Middle School |
The systems consist of both penetrating and non-penetrating ballasted roof-mount systems, all utilizing American made Sharp panels.
As additional phases of the 10MW project roll out, the city expects to offset a total of $10 million over the next 20 years through the utilization of solar power.

2012 Solar Incentives
With all signs pointing to the expiration of the Federal 1603 Treasury Grant on December 31, 2011, there are still plenty of solar incentives that will remain in effect moving into 2012 that are sure to show an attractive return on investment.
2012 Solar Incentives:
- 30% Investment Tax Credit (commercial & residential)
Business owners and homeowners can take a 30% federal tax credit equal to the total expenditures of a solar system on systems placed in service before December 31, 2016.
- 50% Bonus Depreciation (commercial)
Allows companies to depreciate 50% of the capital investment in year one for systems placed in service between January 1, 2012 and December 31, 2012, with an additional 50% depreciation that can be spread out over years 2 thru 5.
- Marketable SRECs (commercial & residential)
Massachusetts has one of the strongest SREC markets in the country paying system owners for the kilowatt hours their systems produce.
Additional rebates and grants are also offered in Massachusetts for qualifying situations
Beaumont Solar can assess you property and prepare a summary of system cost and financial analysis of expected savings and payback period. Capitalizing on the Economic & Environmental Benefits of Solar Energy
Massachusetts Utilities Announce Another Hike in Electric Rates
Fixed rates make sense for the interest rates we pay, and with Massachusetts utility rates on the rise again, applying a fixed rate to our kilowatt rates can add up to substantial monies saved every month for years to come.
National Grid, one of the state's major investor-owned utility companies, raised their rates by 12% effective November 1, 2011. For perspective, a NGRID customer who uses 1,000MWh per year would pay an additional $135,000 over the next 15 years, not taking into account however, any future rate hikes.
Western Massachusetts Electric Co. has announced intentions to hike commercial and industrial supply rates by 10.2% and residential supply rates by 10.6%
As a whole, Massachusetts has historically had one of the highest utility rates in the country, currently ranking as the 10th highest state with an average rate of 14.82 cents per kWh.
While Electric Rates Rise, the Sun's Rates Never Change
Solar energy is the cleanest, most dependable forms of defense against utility rate hikes and carbon emissions.
On the Economic side:
- reduction or elimination of your utility bill
- increases the appraised value of a property without an increase in property taxes
- allows for cash rebates, Federal tax credits and an additional revenue stream through the cash value of SRECs (solar renewable energy credits: $0.28 or more for every kWh of energy produced)
On the Environmental side:
- Fights global warming
- Reduce your carbon emissions - a 100kW system can offset up to 8 tons of CO2 emissions every month
- Reduce America's dependence on foreign oil
