Message from the Director

Global Issues Network Deeper Dive
The Global Issues Network (GIN) Deeper Dive event took place on February 16 and was hosted by The St. Andrew's Schools. The event drew 52 participants, half of which were students, from 15 different organizations and schools. Students and educators
heard from two keynote speakers - Mark Polansky, aerospace engineer and research pilot and a former NASA astronaut, and John Bickel 2014 Hawaii History Teacher of the year. Students were then given the opportunity to take a deeper dive into some of the Global Issues, while educators engaged in their own breakout session aimed at supporting their efforts. This event was the second of many more to come, as we prepare for the first Hawaii GIN Conference in spring 2017.

GIN is open to all independent, charter and public schools. For more information about GIN or to start a GIN Club in your school, please contact Robert Landau or Deanna D'Olier.

HAIS News
HAIS Science and Engineering Fair
Students from 25 Oahu HAIS schools gathered at the District Science and Engineering Fair on February 6, at 'Iolani School.  206 students, grades 6 to 12, presented their projects to judges from the science and education community. The top 2 projects in the senior research division will represent HAIS at the International Science and Engineering Fair, in Phoenix, this May.  First place went to Shaylin Marn from Kamehameha Schools, second place to Ariana Kim and Sreelakshmi Kutty from St. Andrews Priory and third place to Holly Kaapu from Kamehameha Schools.

New HAIS Listserv Groups
HAIS has added two more new listservs to the HAIS account:

Preschooldirectors@haislist.org

TRs@haislist.org (Teacher Representatives)

As with the other HAIS listservs, each of these new listservs helps to support communication among staff and faculty working in these areas and their colleagues in similar positions at other schools.  As a reminder of how these constituency group listservs work, any member of a listserv group can send an email to that listserv, and every other member of that listserv will receive it and be able to reply either to just the sender or to the entire listserv group. Only a member of the list is able to send to the list and only persons in relevant positions are able to join a list. To become a member of any of these two new groups please email Deanna D'Olier with the name, title, institution and email address of the individual(s), and we will add them to the appropriate listserv database.  Click here for the complete list of Constituency Listserv Groups.
