July 2016

We hope everyone had a fun & safe Independence Day weekend! I personally made the choice of not going out on Lake Norman. I guess I'm getting too old to put my life at that much risk! Man, it's gotten absolutely crazy out there on the weekends, let alone a holiday weekend. In any case, we are blessed to live in such a beautiful place.

On a very personal note, it seems that we've had numerous clients going through some pretty tough issues lately - from the heartbreaking losses of loved ones or serious health conditions to immediate family members/themselves. It sure seems like life is not fair at times, but we can only hope that there is a higher calling that has an ultimate plan that none of us can understand while on this earth. When a client's heart breaks, so do ours at JDS Wealth Management. We just wanted to let these folks know again that we're here for you, and we're thinking about you every day. For the rest of you that receive this newsletter, please say a prayer for the members of our client family that have come upon tough times.

On the business side of things, ISN'T THIS STOCK MARKET FUN? WEEEE! I sure hope those of you that are 100% dependent on the market (not our clients) don't get motion sickness. Be prepared for more volatility in the future, because I think we're only getting started. There's a reason we plan the way we do at JDS Wealth Management - with safety and guaranteed income as the foundation of your portfolio. Growth is fine, but not at the risk of potentially losing your nest egg or much needed income!

Please remember: THE PURPOSE OF THE MONEY DICTATES WHERE YOU PUT IT

Enjoy this month's articles. I think they are very informative and timely.

The Changing World of Retirement Income Planning: Do You Feel Lucky?
Lake Norman Magazine, July 2016
Without question, the number one concern of retirees today is outliving their money. But what's really most important: outliving your money or outliving your income? With pensions being a thing of the past, Social Security in trouble, stock market volatility becoming the norm, and folks living longer, old school ways of thinking about your retirement income plan could get you in trouble if you're not careful! In my professional opinion, RELIABLE INCOME IS THE KEY TO RETIREMENT.

When it comes to planning for income in retirement, there are a few other questions that need to be asked. How much income do you need? What are your sources of income? Is the income guaranteed for life? Does it allow for inflation? Are both spouses covered? Is it taxable? If it is stock market based, then what will you do if the markets don't cooperate? Do you want "maybe income" or "guaranteed income"?

Markets In Turmoil
GFPC Thought for the Week (393)
Synopsis

* The VIX is the de facto measurement for volatility in the stock market, and it is a mean-reverting index that tends to move towards its long-term average over time.

* Financial news networks are the only entities that benefit from watching the VIX over time.

* Volatility should be viewed as an opportunity, and by doing so an investor will realize that opportunities arise in financial markets all the time.

Ten Reasons Why Brexit Isn't Worrisome
GFPC Thought for the Week (394)
Synopsis

* The media has fixated on the notion that the U.K. vote to leave the European Union will lead to imminent disaster.

* There are several reasons why this vote, for the time being, is simply not that big of a deal.

* The volatility that has ripped through world financial markets has created several opportunities for "discount shopping."
