Here is Matt "The Hugger" Hendricks of Sebastopol and his 53" Sturgeon caught at the mouth of the Petaluma River on live Grass Shrimp from Leonard's.  Sharp hooks and live bait lead to this being a suicide fish and Matt's first sturgeon.  It is rumored that he cried for 10 minutes straight after fighting this fish and he nicknamed it 'Sebastian' after the crab in The Little Mermaid (his favorite movie). Unda tha Sea!!!

Fishing Update
  • ***Petaluma River***:  So the last two days I've worked the shop I've caught/released limits of Bass (using all of our live baits). Thursday afternoon Matt Hendricks (see Pics below) caught a nice keeper Sturgeon near the mouth of our river while using Grass Shrimp as bait.  Bullheads are still a great choice for bait for targeting Bass but we recommend using the shrimps and pile worms so that you have a better chance to catch a Sturgeon as well as Bass.  We have been saying for weeks that the Sturgeon bite was just waiting for fresh water and it seems like we got what we were looking for. Go burn through some Sturgeon tags before 2012 is over!!!
  • Napa River: Bass primarily with few Sturgeon.  As a matter of fact Capt. Joel had one in his Shrimp net this week crushing all his bait on a drag this week.  The fish was 7+ feet and struggled to get it back in the water.  The last couple years have been great for oversized fish and we are excited to see that continue on.  There have been schools of Shad both in this river system and ours active on the surface and casting shad like jigs could produce nice fish as well as trolling rattletraps.
  • San Pablo Bay: I wish I had something different to report here but so far it is more of the same.  Sharks and Rays which put up a nice fight have primarily been the species of fish caught out here.  If you want to fight a lot of fish this is your spot.  We have had a few Sturgeon caught off of China Camp and some nice bass as well.  Fishing the mouth of either the Petaluma River or Sonoma Creek is likely your best bet for Sturgeon.
  • Bait:  Grass Shimp, Ghost Shrimp, Pile Worms, Bull Heads and Mudsuckers are all in abundance! Definitely try using the shrimp baits for a chance to get a Sturgeon.  They are here and being caught but it is so rare to catch one on a Bullhead or another swim bait.
  • Dave Hurley provides the best detailed fishing report for the greater Bay Area.  Check it out and sign up: The Hurley Chronicles
  • Low Tides: We recommend that you do not try to boat into our slough right now unless it is high tide.  The mud is pretty thick and if you can just stop by before you launch.  We hate to see you guys mess up your engine kicking up mud on the bottom of a tide.  Until they dredge you gotta drive here before you launch.

Captain Joel caught "Frankie" AKA "Frank The Tank" in his net this week.  Frankie is a 8" 2/3lb bullhead and will likely be released this week to live another day.

Wanda's Corner
Here is Wanda with her keeper Bass and a undersized Sturgeon!  They fished today on the Napa River with Grass Shrimp.  Are you guys taking notes?
