Drug Take-Back Event, April 30
|
To assist community members in the safe disposal of unused or expired prescription drugs or other medication they may have in their homes, Fort Bend ISD will host a Drug Take-Back event on Saturday, April 30, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. in the Mercer Stadium parking lot (16403 Lexington Blvd., Sugar Land 77479).

FBISD joins in Million Mile Month challenge
|
The Fort Bend ISD community - to include students, staff and parents - is gearing up for participation in this year's Million Mile Month (MMM) challenge. Superintendent of Schools Dr. Charles Dupre has agreed to compete with three other superintendents to "step up to fitness" and encourage physical activity and friendly competition among staff, students, and community members.

District names 2016 Bilingual and ESL Teachers of the Year
|
Each year, FBISD's Program for English Language Learners invites our principals to nominate their outstanding Bilingual and English as a Second Language (ESL) teachers to compete in the Houston Area Association for Bilingual Education (HAABE) Teacher of the Year awards competition. The winners of the District competition are: Belinda Cavazos of Burton Elementary School, FBISD 2016 Bilingual Teacher of the Year; Michelle Carrejo of Barrington Place Elementary School, FBISD 2016 Elementary ESL Teacher of the Year; and Caroline LeBlanc of Progressive High School, FBISD 2016 Secondary ESL Teacher of the Year. They have advanced to the Houston-area competition and will be honored at the HAABE Awards Ceremony on April 30. Pictured from left to right are: Cavazos, Carrejo and LeBlanc.

 Students at two Fort Bend ISD elementary campuses will benefit from a brand new learning experience, designed to result in academic innovation and improved student achievement. The EDGE (Educators Dedicated to Growing Excellence) instructional model consists of a holistic approach to student instruction and support, while also offering teachers the opportunity to grow professionally and develop as leaders while positively impacting the lives of students.

FBISD receives national recognition for expanding access to college |
District makes the College Board's 2015 Gaston Caperton Opportunity Honor Roll Fort Bend ISD is one of 130 school districts in the United States being recognized for creating opportunities for traditionally underrepresented students. The districts featured on the Honor Roll have expanded access to higher education by providing students with rigorous academic offerings and innovative college-preparation programs.

The National Association of Music Merchants Foundation has recognized Fort Bend ISD for its outstanding commitment to music education with the 2016 Best Communities for Music Education designation. This is the 7th consecutive year that FBISD has earned the honor for demonstrating exceptional efforts toward maintaining music education as part of our schools' core curriculum.

Kudos: Recognizing Employees for a Job Well Done!

Jerrie Kammerman, principal at Missouri City Middle School, is the recipient of the U.S. Department of Defense Patriot Employer Award, presented by Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR). The Patriot Employer award recognizes employers who support their employees who serve in the National Guard or Reserve through such measures as arranging flexible schedules, granting time off prior to and after deployment, caring for families and granting leaves of absence if needed. Micah Nickerson, a fifth-grade teacher at Glover Elementary School, was named the 2016 HAABSE (Houston Area Alliance of Black School Educators) Elementary Teacher of the Year. He was among three educators to be recognized for the outstanding job they do in educating students. HAABSE recognizes educators in three award categories: Elementary Teacher of the Year, Secondary Teacher of the Year and Living Legend. The winners, selected by the HAABSE Retired Educators' Committee, received monetary awards ranging from $100 to $1,000 and were honored at HAABSE's Outstanding Teacher Awards and Recognition Ceremony in February.
Fort Bend ISD's Transportation Department honored nearly 30 bus drivers with perfect attendance awards for the 2014-2015 school year, recognizing their commitment to the students they serve and to their profession. The honorees received a celebratory lunch, certificates, a jacket patch and a "Hands that Serve, Hearts that Care" lapel pin. Honorees unable to attend the luncheon received a Cheddars gift card, along with the other award items.
The Texas Schools Public Relations Association (TSPRA) awarded FBISD's Community Relations Department with 13 awards (2 Best of Category, 7 gold and 4 silver) during the 2016 TSPRA Star Awards program held during the association's annual conference. FBISD was among the many Texas school districts recognized in the awards program for outstanding work in both print and electronic media. Submitting and earning awards were: Nancy Porter, Chief Communications Officer; Stacey Crews, Director of Communications; Amanda Bubela, Assistant Director of External Communications; Becky Walker, Graphics Coordinator; Natalie Rivera, Communications Coordinator; and Keryn Miles, Communications Specialist. Women's Group hosts Staff Appreciation Day at McAuliffe
|
McAuliffe Middle School staff recently enjoyed a Staff Appreciation Day, courtesy of the Suburban Sugar Land Women. The non-profit organization has adopted McAuliffe as its sponsor school this year to provide support to students, staff and parents. The McAuliffe staff enjoyed a variety of refreshments, including cookies, lemonade and apple cider.

Seen Around the Bend: Bush High School Marathon Team

 Our cameras caught members of the Bush High School "Broncos" family showing off the medals and jackets they received after participating in the second annual Katy Half Marathon, which is now part of the Bayou City Half Marathon Series. Participating in the marathon was an extension of the group's health and wellness program.
