THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN EQ (EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE) AND CONFLICT

WHAT IS CONFLICT?

The Academic Leadership Support defines conflict as "a disagreement to which the parties involved perceive a threat to their needs, interest, or concerns."

Conflict is not a bad thing. It is a part of human nature and can bring about change and growth.

Our goal is to handle conflict on a daily basis with a high degree of EQ. Sometimes our ability to handle a conflict depends upon the person or situation involved. It is still the ideal for us to handle any conflict at our higher level of EQ.

RESPONSES TO CONFLICT

Some of the different responses to handling conflicts are:

  • Avoidance
  • Freezing up
  • Impulsively jumping in
  • Anger
  • Fight
  • Flight
EXERCISE

This week I invite you to observe the following:

1.         Which of the 6 responses do you relate to or use when you are in a conflict?

2.         What is your behavior when you are around others when they are in their own conflict?

3.         What can you learn about yourself when watching others in conflict?

I look forward to hearing from you about how your responses and behavior. We will learn together.
