What is Your Emotional Intelligence (EQ)?

This is a fourth in a series on Intelligence.

Dear ,

Welcome to Issue 193.  If you did not receive a previous issue, you may use the archive link below to view it now.  The mission of "Marvelous Mondays" is to offer an inspirational thought, a practical exercise, some humor, or a simple tip to jump-start your week and to enhance your life, business, outlook or relationships.

Please feel free to forward "Marvelous Mondays" to others who will enjoy it.

OVERWHELM & EMOTIONAL RESPONSE

When our senses are overwhelmed from stress, our instincts can be useful but can also interfere with our ability to make good choices or decisions.  Our rational minds are capable of expanding those choices and decisions, but the emotional part of our brain can get in our way. When that happens, we get stuck and repeat earlier mistakes. Therefore, it's important to understand and control the emotional part of our brain.

THE FIVE SKILLS ARE ON THE WAY

Beginning with the next issue we will discuss and learn the 5 skills needed for developing our emotional intelligence (EQ). Anyone can learn these skills at any time. Of course, there is a difference between learning the skills and integrating those skills into our lives. Knowledge without skills won't get us where we want to be.

EXERCISE

This week I invite you to reflect on your emotional intelligence using the scale of 0-10:

  1. Remember a day when your EQ was low. For instance, an argument with an employee or someone in your family, a time when your favorite ice cream store closed 5 minutes early and you weren't allowed entrance, or road rage, especially when stalled in a long line on the highway.
  2. Remember a day when your EQ was high and you handled the situation well.
  3. Remember a time when you used humor and play to handle a conflict or a potentially troubling situation.
