Chesed is an integral part of life at Ramaz. In high school, it is the sophomore Chesed Program that lays the foundation for students' ongoing involvement in volunteer programs and initiatives during high school and beyond. Recently, senior Abbey Lepor '16 spoke to a group of parents about her project--everyone was touched by her experience.  Abbey began her sophomore year serving lunch to the elderly every Sunday with Met Council.  She also helped coordinate the Chanukah and Purim activities at her shul, Sutton Place Synagogue.  While
those projects were meaningful, they were not close to her heart.  After speaking with her mother about one of her patients who was wheelchair bound and loved to play tennis, Abbey decided that she wanted to combine one of her passions--tennis--with her chesed project. Abbey began volunteering at the Wheelchair Sports Federation in their tennis program. At first she was a "ball girl," picking up balls for players to maximize their playing time on the court. Over time, Abbey developed relationships with the players on the court and assisted them. One day she was asked to fill in for one of the players with the condition that she played in a wheelchair. Eventually she was asked to coach the players on the beginner's court in the spring of her sophomore year, and the following November, she became certified in coaching wheelchair tennis. Abbey still volunteers every Sunday. As Abbey shared, "It can be difficult finding chesed projects that are a best match, or to think that these chesed contributions won't make a difference.  But for someone out there, they mean the world and I have gained much more than what I have given with my time."

CHESED EVENT TO HONOR MEMORY OF ALUMNI
On Sunday, January 31 the Ramaz Alumni Association will partner with DOROT for their Winter Package Delivery program.  We dedicate this event in memory of Yehuda Bayme '02, Judah Marans '06, and Daniella Moffson '12 -- Ramaz alumni who embodied the characteristics of kindness and giving. We will have the opportunity to bring food packages to DOROT clients and visit with them.  Join us for an alumni breakfast and then bring a friend and spend a couple of hours brightening the day of someone in our community.  It will be a true chesed and worth your time. ALUMNI CAREER DEVELOPMENT NETWORK
As we continue to look for ways to create meaningful connections among our alumni community, we're excited to announce the launch of the Ramaz Alumni Career Development Network.  This pilot program will provide college-age alumni with the opportunity to apply for internships as well as mentoring opportunities offered by Ramaz alumni and current parents.
In the past, the Ramaz Alumni Association has made introductions and connections between our college-age alumni with our network of
industry leaders. Now, we are excited to launch a more formalized pilot program for our alumni community and hope you will participate.

HOW IT WORKS:
We encourage companies, large and small, as well as individuals, non-profits, and government agencies to offer positions and learning experiences. The hours and duration of the internship are determined by the employer and the positions may be paid or unpaid, depending on the type of opportunity and work required.  We encourage college-age alumni to let us know what type of internships they are seeking.
With the information provided, we will introduce alumni to potential employers. Alumni employers are not obligated to hire college-age alumni, but we hope our graduates will stand out among the crowd!

Internship/Job Seekers: click HERE to complete a brief form telling us about yourself and the position you are seeking. Form due by February 19.
Alumni Employers: click HERE to complete a brief form describing the position(s) you have available.  Form due by February 19.

ALUMNI AROUND SCHOOL
This past December we were lucky to have a handful of alumni come back to Ramaz for a visit.

Our first guest was Eytan Hyman '75 who attended Ramaz from 1962 - 1967 prior to his family moving to Israel.  Eytan's visit to the Ramaz Lower School on Friday, December 11, was his first time back at the school since he left nearly 50 years ago.  As Eytan shared, "The visit was very moving for me and the Oneg {program} was wonderful. I was really made to feel welcome."

Eytan lives in Kfar Vradmim, located in the Western Galilee of Israel. He is an economist working at Nativ Systems, where he advises municipalities on how to manage their budgets, in particular in the area of education.

The following week, Eytan came back to Ramaz for another visit and helped identify several classmates in his 1st grade class photo.  It was amazing to watch his face light up and listen to the stories of fellow classmates

Later in the month, Yael Magid '12 and Suri Bandler '12 came to the Upper School to visit former faculty. It was fun to bump into them and we were so happy that they both came back to let us know how they are doing. After graduation, Yael spent a year studying at Migdal Oz and then served in the IDF for a year.  She's now a student at University of Maryland. Suri spent her Gap Year in Sherut Leumi and is now at MIT majoring in mathematical studies and computer science.

Professor Adam Ferziger '82 of Israel's Bar-Ilan University served as the scholar-in-residence at KJ for the Shabbat of December 18-19. Adam spoke Friday evening following a festive Shabbat dinner, delivered the sermon Saturday morning, gave a shiur before mincha, and spoke following Seudat Shlishit. All were well received by the community and it was a treat to have one of our alumni come back to KJ.

As Adam shared: "Ramaz taught us to love all Jews, to form a deep connection to the State of Israel, and of course, to recognize that "menschlichkeit"- moral fortitude and humanity--is a prerequisite for "Godliness." The KJ/Ramaz community that welcomed me so warmly during my visit--Rabbi Haskel Lookstein and his outstanding rabbinical colleagues, the incoming Rabbi Chaim Steinmetz, former schoolmates, old and new friends--continues to grow in the spirit of these ideals. It was especially gratifying to witness the considerable interest and appreciation for research and teaching cultivated in Bar-Ilan University, an institution in which Rabbi Joseph Lookstein and KJ played key leadership roles during its first decades."

Adam holds the Rabbi SR Hirsch Chair in the Department of Jewish History and Contemporary Jewry at Bar-Ilan University. He has lectured and published extensively on Jewish religious denominations, modern Jewish identity, the history of the modern rabbinate, American Orthodoxy, and the encounter between halakhah and contemporary social realities. His most recent work is Beyond Sectarianism: The Realignment of American Orthodox Judaism. Adam and his wife Dr. Naomi Ferziger, along with their six children, live in Kfar Saba.

COLLEGE AGE ALUMNI
Congratulations to Gabe L. '15 and Eddie M. '15 who participated in their Tekes Hashba'ah on Wednesday, January 6. We are proud of their accomplishments and are appreciative of their serving in Tzahal.

A week later our Gap Year and College-Age alumni came together for the annual gathering in Israel held at Beit Avi Chai. Rabbi Shlomo Stochel spent the week visiting our alumni on their Gap Year programs and hosted the reunion with close to 30 students this past Thursday evening.

As Gabriel Roth '15 shared, "Our meeting at Orayta with Rabbi Stochel was amazing. We spoke for three hours about everything from our time in Ramaz to our daily learning in yeshiva. It was really nice to be able to tell him how much, in retrospect, we appreciate what we got out of Ramaz and he was able to tell us how proud he is of us for having grown so much in yeshiva. It was really nice to relay our experience to someone who knows us so well from four years of high school. The reunion was great. Even though we're all in Israel, it was really a treat to see everyone together. It was nice to catch up and see how easily we mesh together just like when we were in high school. It wasn't long before we started playing hackey sack like the good ole days in Ramaz.  :) "

RAMAZ ANNUAL DINNER

The 79th Ramaz Annual Dinner was an evening of celebration among our entire community.  We are proud to share the following video and photo recap from the event where we officially welcomed Rabbi Eric Grossman, our new head of school, and recognized Mr. Rudy Arjune, our Lower School superintendent who is retiring after 33 years of dedicated service to Ramaz and KJ.

Please enjoy the video and slideshow from the evening where we celebrated the greatness of our students and put on display what makes a Ramaz education unique in the yeshiva world--Ramaz opens doors to new possibilities, experiences, talents, and lessons. What an evening!

We are so proud of our students who all demonstrate their unique gifts as innovators, Israel activists, doers of chesed and most of all, menschen.

IN-AND-OUTSIDE THE CLASSROOM
Each week Rabbi Eric Grossman, Ramaz's new Head of School, shares his reflections on the classroom and other happenings at Ramaz in the weekly Zmail bulletin.  Below is his most recent article.

A LIVING LEGACY OF CHESED | Monday, January 18

As I pored over the news reports that appeared this weekend in the wake of the tragic death of our alumna, Daniella Moffson z''l, I saw her spirit already spreading goodness in the world. For the longest time, and at an increasing rate over the past few years, news outlets have published articles and press about the moral failings of Orthodox Jews. But here, plastered across the papers, was the image of a young woman who represented only the best of our Modern Orthodox values: chesed, tzedakah, kindness, charity to all, Jew and non-Jew alike. Featured prominently in these pieces were pictures of her community - our community - coming together in solidarity and prayer, committed to continuing her good works. Mentioned time and again was how her teachers, rabbis, and peers at Ramaz and KJ were the very people who inspired her to live a life of goodness and giving.

I received an email from a parent last week with the subject line, "What it's all about." Attached to the email was a recording of her child, in the Ramaz nursery, reciting the Modeh Ani prayer upon awaking in the morning. I have mentioned before in my writings to the Ramaz community that Modeh Ani is the prayer I recite with the most kavanah, the tefillah upon which I meditate most deeply and that is the subject of my greatest concentration. Modeh Ani is the ultimate expression of gratitude; with its words we begin our day, before we even leave our beds:

I offer thanks to You, living and eternal King, for You have mercifully restored my soul within me; great is your faith!

The most powerful moment for me at the funeral on Friday was when Daniella's father shared with us that her alarm clock played Modeh Ani every morning. How profoundly painful that the prayer thanking God for the daily restoration of the soul was the wake up call for one whose soul was so suddenly torn from her body.

This is a difficult week to feel gratitude. Gratitude is the feeling of having everything we need, we want, and more. As our forefather Jacob declared (Gen. 33:11), "...yesh li kol - I have everything." We cannot feel this week that we have everything, for we have lost so much. We have lost so much joy, so much goodness. We have lost a precious part of who we are in the loss of Daniella Moffson.

The Modeh Ani ends with a strange locution: while we would expect the prayer to speak of our faith in God who, ultimately, is responsible for giving us life, instead it speaks of God's faith in us -"Your faith is great." It is us in whom God has faith, and upon whom He relies to perpetuate chesed and goodness in His world.

And for this we can be grateful this week. We can be grateful for living in such a deeply good and supportive community driven by Torah values of kindness towards others in the name of the Almighty. In our coming together around the Moffson family and in our collective pledges to continue her legacy, we have shown our faith in Daniella, her values, and in God. We are grateful to have had such a person among us to inspire us to be better people and better Jews.

I have already received countless emails from students, alumni, and members of our community with suggestions for communal acts of righteousness, chesed, in Daniella's name. The Talmud in Brachot 18a tells us, "...the righteous, even after their death, are called living." Through her righteous life, Daniella continues to live within us. May her memory be a blessing.
