It's official! Earlier this month I celebrated four years working at Ramaz - the time has really flown by!
Over the past four years I've had the opportunity to personally connect with hundreds of alumni living in the New York area, Israel, Los Angeles (most recently), and even with the handful of alumni that live in my community back in Detroit, MI. In my time at the school, I've had the opportunity to host several Shabbat dinners, professional networking events, close to 40 reunions, and many other exciting programs and initiatives. It has been incredibly meaningful and rewarding to be connected to such a special place and to watch the Ramaz alumni community grow and flourish over the brief amount of time I have been here.
It has always been my goal for you - as an alumni community, wherever you are at in your lives - to feel a stronger connection to your alma mater and to each other through the various programs and initiatives sponsored by the Ramaz Alumni Association. I hope I am accomplishing that for you!
Thank your support and involvement throughout the years. I look forward to connecting with you soon. Please be in touch at any time!
Warmest regards and Chag Kasher V'sameach,
Lauren Katz

ALUMNI GATHERING IN ISRAEL
Back in January, members of the Class of 2014 who are spending a Gap Year in Israel gathered at the Kotel for the tekes hashba'ah, swearing-in ceremony, of Yossi Yadid, one of their classmates who is serving in Tzahal, the Israel Defense Forces. Yossi is the son of Ramaz US faculty member, Rami Yadid.
Following the moving ceremony, over forty of the graduates enjoyed dinner together hosted at Yeshivat Netiv Aryeh. In attendance were Rabbi Lookstein, who welcomed the students and congratulated Yossi, and Rabbi Stochel, who delivered a Dvar Torah and described his weeklong stay in Israel to visit Ramaz students attending yeshivot, midrashot and other programs as a nachat-filled experience akin to a parent visiting his children living and learning in Israel.

FASHION NETWORKING EVENT
At the end of January over 50 alumni attended our first fashion networking event at the Ralph Lauren accessories showroom in Midtown, Manhattan.
Leandra Medine '07, fashion and lifestyle blogger and author, was the featured speaker. Leandra shared her incredible professional journey with us and perspectives working in the industry. As Claire Distenfeld '04 shared at the event, "Leandra has created a voice within the fashion world that is strong, unique, and powerful, while also being extremely witty, relaxed, and inviting."
We thank Sara (Meltzer) Shemia '92 for hosting the event at the Ralph Lauren accessories showroom. Also, thank you to the host committee, Claire Distenfeld '04
and Sara (Meltzer) Shemia '92 co-chairs, Jon Boyarsky '92, Dan Castle '96, Rachel (Benishai) Garson '99,

MILESTONE REUNIONS
Whether it's a 10, 15, 20, 30 or 40 year reunion, you can always hear comments from alumni such as: "Oh my gosh, it's so great to see you after all these years!" "You look amazing!" "You look exactly the same!" "I can't believe I remember my locker combination!" "I had the best time at the reunion - thank you for an incredible evening!"

On Saturday, February 7th, we hosted the Classes of 05, '00, and '95 for a 10, 15 and 20 Joint Year Reunion. With close to 270 alumni and faculty in attendance, it was a lively celebration and a great moment for alumni to connect with friends and interact with fellow alumni. The three classes came together for the first part of the evening and then broke off into their own dessert receptions where they got to enjoy a slideshow of memories and reminisce about their days at Ramaz.
As Stephanie (Franco) Biselman '05 shared, "Thank you for an amazing night! It was a wonderful evening and and everyone enjoyed themselves. I look forward to participating in future alumni events!"

One month later we had the opportunity to host the Classes of '85 and '75 for their 30 and 40 Year Reunions. It was an evening full of reminiscing and catching up on each other's lives after many years of not seeing each other. Alumni enjoyed a dessert reception and their trip down memory lane looking at a slideshow of pictures from their tim in high school.
What is amazing to hear time and time again is beautifully expressed by Evan Farber '95: "
I have so many wonderful memories of my four years at Ramaz - it's impossible to narrow them down! The vast majority of them center around the wonderful friendships I made, which I was convinced would
last a lifetime - and in many cases, that was completely true."
Of course, 90% of alumni still say "Tuna Fish Fridays" are the best lunches.

WEST COAST GATHERING
Last month, the Ramaz Alumni Association hosted a West Coast Gathering in Los Angeles, CA. Dina Hellerstein '81 & Joshua Metzger '82 graciously hosted the event in their home for approximately 30 alumni and guests. It was great to see alumni from the 1960s to the 2000s. The highlight of the evening included a performance by the 50 members of the Ramaz Upper School Choir and Chamber Chorus who were visiting LA on their "Choir Trip" during President's week. The Choir and Chorus are directed by Mr. Daniel Henkin '85, who was also in attendance at the event.
"Being a part of the Ramaz choir was a meaningful and unforgettable part of my Ramaz experience. It was an exquisite joy to watch and listen to these soulful and spirited students, so beautifully led by Daniel Henkin. Congratulations to all on this uplifting event!" - Dalit Berkowitz '84
As Josh Metzger shared with us, "We were so happy to have the alumni and the choir here in our home...for us the Sat night event was the culmination of a week of performances that reminded us what we appreciate most about Ramaz and the values the school embraces."
Sarah (Morduchowitz) Nissel '98 expressed,
"My family and I were thrilled to participate in hosting the choir's trip to California. We spent Shabbat with the amazingly talented Daniel Henkin and my very own Tanakh teacher, Mrs. Weinstein, along with her husband. Most impressive of all were the two choir performances we were privileged to attend, the second at an alumni gathering where I reunited with old Ramaz friends I did not even know were living on the west coast and met new friends whose love for and gratitude to Ramaz were as great as mine. We hope Ramaz comes back to California again soon!"

NYU CAMPUS VISIT
This past month, we headed downtown to The Bronfman Center on NYUs campus to connect with our alumni at NYU, Baruch, Hunter, FIT, and Cooper Union. Alumni enjoyed a sushi dinner, Ramaz's famous chocolate cookies for dessert, and a shiur given by Rabbi Kenny Schiowitz. Mr. Ira Miller and Kenny Rochlin '86 joined our college-age alumni for the gathering, too. As David Bernheim shared, "We all had a great time and can't wait for more!"

ALUMNI CAREER SHOWCASE
Spotted in the Upper School earlier this month was the dean of admissions of a top-rated medical school, the co-founder of an Israeli high-tech start-up company, an equity analyst, a partner in a law firm, an adjunct professor of psychology, and a social media executive. These are just some of the alumni professionals who participated in the Alumni Career Showcase for Senior Students on Thursday, March 19.
The Alumni Career Showcase event is designed to give students an opportunity to meet and network with alumni who are leaders in their fields and to expose them to different career options.
Rafi Blumenthal (US College Guidance) introduced the program by reminding students about the opportunities available to them following graduation. As he stated, "...the world is open to you... there are careers today (blogger, for example) that weren't even WORDS, let alone professions a decade ago. And new opportunities will be created and invented, possibly by some of YOU, over the next few years... Remember that the alumni here today are adults and professionals, but very recently they were in your shoes... with opportunities ahead of them. Listen to them, ask them questions, and enjoy the program."
The Alumni Association was proud to have Natan Edelsburg '06, Judah Frommer '99, Gabe Marans '04, Jillian Gross Miller '96, Matthew Hiltzik '90, Tanya Low '07, David Parker '00, Tali (Goldberg) Pines '04, Dr. Lu Steinberg '75, Dr. Rona Woldenberg '79, and Rachel Wolf '95 come back to the school, meet with our current students, and share their advice. At the end of the afternoon, students were saying: "This was awesome!" "The speakers were so great!" "This was an amazing hands-on learning experience." "I have a better idea of what I'll want do in the future!" "We really appreciate the opportunity to learn from the network of Ramaz alumni."

GABE OPPENHEIM '05
Gabe Oppenheim has wanted to tell stories - to write them down - for as long as he can remember. When he was in the second grade, he asked his teacher whether he could pen short fiction during math time. Amazingly, she said yes, perhaps foreseeing the line of work he has pursued ever since.
His newest book is "Boxing in Philadelphia: Tales of Struggle and Survival," a nonfiction look at the culture of fighters in the City of Brotherly love - which he began while a student at the University of Pennsylvania from 2005-2009. Recently, the book was featured in the Wall Street Journal. CLICK HERE to read the story.
The genesis of Oppenheim's book was an encounter he had with a 75-year-old retired boxing trainer during his first week of college - a man Oppenheim merely wanted to profile for the student newspaper. But their interactions didn't end there. "His stories were so raw and sad and suffused with a kind of wisdom that I decided to return to him for the next year and a half and take notes," Oppenheim says. "So I visited his brownstone stoop or his apartment every few months and asked questions. I didn't know I was preparing myself to write a book. I just knew there was something big here that needed to be heard."
Gabe subsequently embarked on years of research, studying rolls of
microfiche between interviews with the fight game's storied technicians - including those whose words might soon be lost. He remembers vividly the muggy summer day in 2007 when he sat down with a fading George Benton - the brilliant '50s middleweight and former trainer fondly known as the "Mayor of North Philadelphia." Benton at the time was still lucid enough to remember his own bouts vividly, though not his time as a trainer. He passed away before the book was published.
The toughest task for Oppenheim was figuring out which tales he could maintain and which he couldn't; at one point, the manuscript ballooned to an unwieldy 800 pages. But Oppenheim had the editorial experience the Rampage had lent him, when, as co-editor in chief he spent many hours navigating the maze of his peers' words surrounded by college guidance counselors (the Rampage's longstanding office then was a nook with a computer in the college Office).
"My memories of speeding to get issues published my senior year stick with me," he says. "That was such a heady time -- it was a rush to run through the school, interviewing students, teachers, cafeteria chefs. To jot down the notes, design the thing, run off the issue to the printer down in Chelsea and then come back a day later to pick up hundreds of copies tied together with twine."
There were many late nights involved, he recalls - though not of the type seniors generally conduct.
"We'd put in big food orders with the yearbook team that also stayed late. I think I twice ate an entire pizza pie myself. I was not only hungry but also tired, overworked and unyielding. I was so deep into it, I didn't have the perspective to pull back and say, 'Hey, you're a senior, relax a little, life should consist of a bit more partying right now'."
Today, with the boxing book published, perhaps that choice has paid dividends ("I probably should've done both," Oppenheim jokes). Oppenheim currently works as a freelancer, writing fiction and nonfiction, plus a few screenplays, from the cozy confines of his Manhattan studio (whose half-wall of exposed brick he very much appreciates).

DAVID MARKENSON '86
Dr. David Markenson began his work in the field of health as a teenager. In high school, David volunteered as a lifeguard with the Red Cross and taught CPR for the organization. Today, Markenson is the chief medical officer of the Sky Ridge Medical Center in Colorado and was recently awarded the Harriman Award for Distinguished Volunteer Service, the Red Cross's highest award for volunteer service. The Harriman Award is given to only one recipient each year and is the highest award from the Red Cross.
Dr. Markenson is currently a Red Cross volunteer and has been the chair of the Scientific Advisory Council since 2005, which includes "a team of experts in fields that include medicine, emergency response, nursing and aquatics. The Council ensures all of the content in Red Cross courses adheres to the highest scientific standards, including program research, development and implementation," according to the Red Cross.
"My work as an EMT and lifeguard [in high school] and my future desire to be a physician with the cases of cardiac arrest [came from the fact that] I saw that no one at the scene knew how to help," Markenson said. "For me [the award] represents acknowledgement not of me personally so much as the process I built in the Red Cross for an independent science body to provide oversight and direction of all programs and activities. [It's] notable that this behind scenes work was recognized."
David has long been fascinated with sciences, teaching himself mitosis and meiosis in fifth grade, and expanded that knowledge when he entered high school. "[It] taught me about helping others, fascinated [me] with medical Halacha and the sense of helping others, and [made me become] involved with Hatzolah which I helped to start on the Upper East Side," he said.
David has spent time at the ICU Harlem Hospital, Montefiore Medical Center, Columbia University and the Maria Fareri Children's Hospital and New York Medical College, and credits his time at Ramaz as a basis for his successes.
"The combination of the secular and Jewish education at Ramaz has made me a better physician, researcher and leader," he said. "In addition I continue my Jewish studies especially medical Halacha and Talmud as it helps me think and improve my relationship with patients."
David has kept in touch with a number of classmates, even after moving to Colorodo and in fact lives within blocks away from a Ramaz classmate today.
