IT'S BEEN A GREAT SUMMER!

I hope you all have been enjoying your summer.  Here at Ramaz, I have been planning for what promises to be an amazing year for the Ramaz alumni community!  We are gearing up for our annual Fall Shabbat Dinner for young professionals, upcoming milestone reunions, networking events, and our community-wide celebration in September rededicating KJ and celebrating the expanded Ramaz Lower School.  At the same time, we've been enjoying many lifecycle moments with our alumni community - the birth of many Ramaz babies, weddings of several alumni, even adding a few more "Ramaz couples" (we now have 118!) - and have mourned the loss of a couple of alumni who passed away.  

At the end of June we closed the Ramaz Alumni Appeal with record breaking support from our alumni community.  We thank EACH OF YOU for your generosity and applaud your role in keeping the traditions of a Ramaz education available for the next generation of Ramaz alumni. This summer we bid farewell to Tamar Gold '09 who worked behind the scenes as our Alumni and Development intern for the past four years.  We thank Tamar for all of her efforts and boundless energy working in our office.  We wish Tamar hatzlacha rabah as she begins her teaching career this fall at Magen David Yeshivah in Brooklyn.  

In addition to all of the great programming for the year ahead, I am personally and professionally excited for this coming year as we welcome my friend from Detroit (my hometown!) and now colleague, Rabbi Eric Grossman, the new Head of School for Ramaz.  Please see his welcome letter below.  Eric is an amazing teacher and well-respected in the Jewish day school world, so please join me in extending a warm welcome to him and his family.  Our young professionals community will have the chance to meet Rabbi Grossman at the Fall Shabat Dinner on Friday evening, September 18.

HEAD OF SCHOOL GREETINGS
Dear Ramaz Alumni,
 
I want to take this opportunity to introduce myself to you as the new Head of School at Ramaz.  I am honored and thrilled to have this opportunity to lead the school and community that has been so important and formative in your life.
 
While we did not have the opportunity to be at the school together during your elementary and high school years, I feel a connection to you as the individuals who have been essential in shaping the Ramaz of today.  I am anxious to get to know you and learn of your experiences, and to hear your hopes and dreams for the future of the school that I hope will be home to your children and grandchildren.  Many of you have already reached out to me, and I have already gained great insight from our conversations. 
 
One of my great joys of being an educator is staying in touch with my former students and alumni.  I remain in close touch with students whom I taught in the very first years of my career, students I am now proud to call close friends and colleagues.  I hope that we will be able to develop these relationships as we meet and get to know each other at alumni gatherings and events.
 
Thank you for the warm welcome I have received into the Ramaz family, I am grateful to you for making me feel at home.

EVENT HIGHLIGHTS
67TH COMMENCEMENT
This June the Ramaz Alumni Association welcomed 94 graduates from the Class of '15, bringing our network to over 5,500 alumni. We are proud of these graduates whose accomplishments include National Merit Scholarship Program winners and recipients of Letters of Commendation, Bronfman Fellowship participants, a Presidential Scholar semi-finalist, and a Rensselaer Medal recipient, among many other awards.  They are off to over 40 colleges and universities, and many will spend a Gap Year in Israel.  We wish everyone good luck in their future endeavors and a special
hatzlachah rabah to Gabriel L. '15 as he enters Tzahal. 
 

CLASS OF '10 FIVE YEAR REUNION
The Class of '10 hosted its Five Year Reunion this past June.  It was great to see so many members of the class in attendance and to learn where life has taken these alumni since their graduation.  Many have begun their careers, others are in graduate school pursuing professional degrees, and some have started their own businesses.  It was nice to meet the spouses and significant others, and witness the moment classmates reconnected with each other for the first time since they walked the halls of Ramaz.  It was meaningful to have administrators, faculty, and staff in attendance and we appreciate them sharing and welcoming these alumni.  As Zeva Epstein '10 shared, "It was such a fun night with friends!  It felt like nothing changed and we were back in high school."  


 
REAL ESTATE NETWORKING EVENT
At the end of June, we hosted a networking event for alumni in the real estate industry.  It was an incredible evening, with over 70 alumni in attendance representing all areas of the real estate industry.  Jonathan Zamir '00 of Keystone Equities commented, "The event offered a wonderful way to meet various real estate professionals involved in different facets of the business. It was also a great way to catch up with a number of friends. Would love to attend the next one." 
The event was graciously hosted by Joshua Crane '93 at the Spruce Capital Partners showroom.  We thank Adam Tantleff '93, of Madison Realty Capital, for his leadership in serving as chair and speaking that evening and sponsoring the event.  In addition, we appreciate the efforts of the host committee for ensuring a strong turnout and successful evening:

ALUMNI PROFILE
ARI ACKERMAN '89

Entrepreneur, philanthropist, activist, are just a few of the many words that describe alumus Ari Ackerman '89.  However, when asked what elements of his life are most important to him, his immediate response is "my family and my Jewish identity."
 
Ackerman's life journey began in NYC where he spent 14 years at Ramaz.  He was an active student, serving on student government all four years of high school, moving from Class President to Senior Vice President of the GO.  In addition, Ari played basketball and tennis and served as captain of the varsity basketball team his senior year.  He has continued his involvement with his beloved alma mater with helping to both found and participate yearly in the Sam Gyenes Memorial Basketball Tournament.  This past year, Ari gave the speech at the tournament and spoke lovingly of his friend Sam, "I still think of Sam all the time.  Although he was unfairly taken from us too soon, the impact he made on the world, his friends, and anyone he met will last a lifetime."   
 
Ackerman has also returned to Ramaz on a couple occasions to speak at the Alumni Career Showcase event, attended reunions and other alumni functions, and graciously hosted an event for Ramaz young professionals at his home.  Ari cherishes the friendships he made at Ramaz and enjoys meeting fellow alumni for the first time, expressing that there is usually an instant connection.  "Generous, kind, and a willingness to help and do the right thing are all traits of a Ramaz graduate...there's a real menschlichkeit instilled in every student."
 
Following his days at Ramaz, Ari attended Duke University where he studied Political Science and received a certificate in Judaic Studies.  His next stop was Capitol Hill where he worked for Congressman Gary Ackerman (no relation) and on several occasions hosted the Ramaz 8th Grade Washington trip participants. Following his time in DC, Ari moved to the Chicago area where he went back to school, attending the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University studying finance, marketing, and entrepreneurship. 

It was in his last semester of graduate school where he first pitched his idea of what later became Bunk1.com, a business plan with a goal of bridging the gap between technology and the summer camp industry.  After completing his MBA in 1999, Ari jumped into his car and spent the next month driving from Chicago to Los Angeles, visiting about 100 camps along the way.  Currently in its 15th summer in business, Bunk1, used by many in the Ramaz community, is as popular as ever and has been featured on CNN, The Today Show, The Wall Street Journal, and The New York Times.  For more than one million members across the US and Canada, Bunk1 provides parents a one way window - through an Online Photo Gallery and Bunk Notes (one way email) - into their child's world at approximately 1,000 summer camps.

In the Jewish community, Ari serves on the Boards of the Jewish Community Relations Council (JCRC), AIPAC, and is a founder of the Soho Synagogue.  He gave the baccalaureate speech to Jewish students at Duke University's 2006 graduation and is a mentor and frequent speaker to college students through the Jewish Heritage Program.  Ackerman also hosts events at his Manhattan home for many charities and political leaders including: UJA-Federation New York, Former Mayor Michael Bloomberg, Senator John McCain, and Governor Andrew Cuomo. 
 
A serial entrepreneur, Ari's latest venture is one of which he is incredibly proud. Last month he launched the Jewish dating app Tribe.  After four weeks in the app store, Tribe already has over 10,000 users and is already the "most advanced app in the Jewish dating world,"  as noted in The Jewish Week.  Unlike its counterparts like Tinder or Jswipe, Tribe's premise focuses on making sure its users, who can range anywhere from ages 18-60, actually go out on dates.

When creating a profile, users are asked a wide range of questions, from Jewish identity to ideal first date. The technology of the app then suggests potential matches. Like other dating apps, user's swipe left to move to the next profile and right for a man or woman worth talking to.  If there is a match, and with only a push of the "Ask Out" button, Tribe members are able to ask their matches out on dates.  The app recommends a destination based on the users previously stated preferences and current location.  "It's an app that will eliminate dating apps," said Ackerman.

Ari shared, "What I am most passionate about are my family and the continuity of the Jewish people. Tribe brings these elements together by matching interesting, intelligent, inspiring, kind, and attractive members of the Tribe together and pushing them to go out on real dates!" With his strong Jewish background, and love of family and traditions, there is nothing in the world that is more important to him than a good shidduch.  
ALUMNI AROUND TOWN

I am continually uplifted and overwhelmed by our school community and the connections that we have to one another, even 60 years after graduation.  These past few months have allowed me to share high and low moments with many of you and reconnect on multiple levels.

 

It struck me most recently while attending the funeral of Mr. Israel Slochowsky z"l, father of Michele (Slochowsky) Hering '79 and grandfather of Zachary '11 and Rebecca Hering '15. So many friends came on one of the hottest summer days to support their friend and to honor Mr. Slochowsky.  This exemplifies every aspect of what we hope a Ramaz graduate will be and how they care for one another.

 

Just last week it was a special moment to celebrate the double baby naming at the same minyan for the daughters of Michael Distenfeld '01 and Jillian (Gross) Miller '96.  It was also a great Ramaz moment when Mr. Miller became a grandfather for the third time, when Elizabeth (Epstein) Miller '02 and Jonathan Miller '02 became first-time parents to their son, Nathaniel Ahser Chaim.  I also had the pleasure sharing in the brit milah for the son of Michael Lewittes '85.  I was full of pride celebrating with his brothers Ronald '79 and David '80, along with their father Hon. Joel Lewittes '52, who was the sandek.

The simcha-filled summer continued as I danced with so many former graduates at the respective weddings of Ariel Menche '07, Justin Muschel '07, and David Kaufman '04. Their Ramaz chevras made these wonderful smachot so

laybedik and stood out for their closeness and camaraderie.

 

In addition, I had many opportunities to reconnect with alumni faculty this summer. I saw Rabbi Yaakov Bienenfeld while spending a spiritual Shabbat in his shul before camp visiting day upstate and had the honor of reconnecting with Rabbi Dale Polokoff, too.  At camp on visiting day, I enjoyed seeing many Ramaz alumni and their children, including Jason Eichenholz '93 who is relocating with his family to Florida.

 

It's been an amazing summer and I'm happy to share some of the highlight moments with all of you.

As part of a Chesed project, the Alumni Association will partner with Ramaz students and faculty to honor the memory of Rochelle Shoretz z"l, sister of alumni Michael Shoretz '05 and Lily Shoretz '12.  Rochelle was the founder of Sharsheret.
