IT'S SPRINGTIME AT RAMAZ!

As you may recall at Ramaz, the weeks following Passover are both an exciting and meaningful time for students.  Our senior students just returned from their Senior Trip to Germany, Poland, and Israel (see reflections below), and as a community we came together for Yom HaShoah to commemorate the Holocaust.  A week later we mourned the loss of those who fought for the State of Israel for Yom HaZikaron.

The next day, the school transitioned to an atmosphere of joy and celebration in honor of Israel's 67th birthday.  As I sat to write this, I had just come back from watching the Yom Ha'Atzmaut Zimriah - it was such an amazing program and
I am always amazed by how talented our students are! At the same time that I was celebrating in the Middle School, some of our Upper School students met with Jonathan Deluty '12 and Talia Lefkowitz '11, who shared their experiences serving in Tzahal, while others had the opportunity to watch the film Beneath the Helmet.  Of course, the celebrations were not complete without blue and white cupcakes, cookies, and dancing on 78th Street! It is amazing for me to be part of these special moments, knowing that in 5, 10, 25, or many more years later those students will recall those memories as alumni.

In honor of Yom Ha'Atzmaut, we hope you enjoy the Upper School's Torah publication, ASPIRATIONS.  Happy 67th Birthday, Israel!

CLASSROOM HIGHLIGHTS
For many of our alumni, their Senior Trip is one of the most meaningful and memorable experiences they have at Ramaz. This past April, Aviva Lieber '03, Ramaz Upper School Admissions Associate, had the opportunity to travel with the Ramaz Class of '15 on their Senior Trip to Germany, Poland, and Israel.

Going back to Poland was not on my bucket list.  When Mr. Miller approached me to chaperone the senior journey trip to Germany, Poland, and Israel, my immediate reaction was, of course, "yes!" I was lucky enough to go on the Poland/Israel trip when I was a senior at Ramaz.  In preparing for going back to Poland, my first task was to find my journal from my senior year. Reading over my first impressions of Poland and all the things I saw and learned on that trip made me curious about what it would be like to see those places again.  While I don't consider myself to be an overly emotional person, this trip was just as moving as last time, maybe even more.

We landed in Berlin, Germany, on a sunny Monday morning.  I was not expecting Germany to be so beautiful.  Touring Berlin was interesting and I am glad I was given the opportunity to see some of the memorials around the city.  One of most moving places was a train track where the Germans loaded Jews for transport. The date, number of people, and the destination were written along the edges of the tracks. The numbers started off small, then swelled into the thousands as the dates got later, then dropped down to as low as 18 towards the end of the war.  Even when the Nazis were losing the war they still allocated vital resources to transport the few Jews left in Berlin.  I learned this cruel lesson along with the students. It set the tone for the rest of the trip as we headed to Poland.

The experience of returning to Majdanek and Auschwitz was made even more powerful with a survivor of those horrific places.  Mrs. Rachel Roth began her story of miraculous survival as a young girl in the Warsaw ghetto.  I now have a new appreciation for the stories of survival, and the courage of those who fought back in the uprising.  Mrs. Roth's miraculous survival stories continued at Majdanek.  On a sunny day, without a cloud in the sky, the group sat looking out at the camp listening to her story.  The people she met fascinated me. She spoke of a Greek woman in the camp that didn't speak Hebrew or any of the other languages Mrs. Roth spoke, but when she mentioned Shabbat, they both understood each other instantly. The Jewish connection transcends all barriers.

Mrs. Roth's main message during her speeches to the group was that she was speaking for all the people that couldn't.  It is hard to believe that the next generation probably won't meet a Holocaust survivor.  We will become their voice. Going to Poland reaffirmed that and I tried to appreciate each and every moment.

The highlight of this trip, as it was on my trip over ten years ago, was Israel.  Hours after leaving the gates of Auschwitz we landed at Ben Gurion airport.  We only spent two days there but they were amazing.  The air in Israel is beautiful, and that first morning at the Kotel was perfect.  After such an intense few days of absorbing the depressing history of the Jews of eastern Europe it felt like a sigh of relief to be around Jews in our homeland. The best feeling ever.

ALUMNI SPRING APPEAL

We know you get many donation requests, but as a Ramaz graduate, we're hoping you will pay special attention to our ask to your alma mater.

This school year, Ramaz provided over $6.2M in financial aid, which is 17% over last year.  Approximately 26% of our current students' families from New York and New Jersey are receiving financial assistance. In addition to the financial aid need, Ramaz relies on the generous support of its annual donors to enhance key programs and initiatives that have become core to the Ramaz experience, like the Senior Israel Trip, student life and leadership initiatives, and of course, academic excellence.

Our goal is to increase the number of Ramaz alumni who make an annual gift to support their alma mater.  The financial needs of Ramaz, like all Jewish Day Schools, have become significantly greater each year.

Ramaz is fortunate to have over 5,500 alumni who have benefited from their Ramaz experience.  The Spring Alumni Appeal is an opportunity for graduates to make a gift to support the next generation of Ramaz alumni.  We are grateful to all the alumni who have already made a gift this year and appreciate their generosity. Our alumni support is essential to the Ramaz community.
