Celebration of Mexican Revolution Performance by Rocky Point Kids

HAPPY NEW YEAR and HELLO to 2015!

Hard to believe it but 2014 is officially over and today welcomes a brand new year with lots of promise. (I have already promised myself that I'll get back on my exercise routine...) Last year was a great one and I am positive that this year will be even better.

It has been really cold over the past few days and I've had the fireplace burning every night. Word is that it may even hit freezing temps this week. This is a big contrast from last year when we really didn't have much of a winter at all. Maybe it's me getting older but I sure find it harder to get out of bed when it's cold and dark in the mornings these past couple days.

We officially came in 2nd place last year (2014) for our all time sales record since the inception of the Sonoran Resorts Sales Department many years ago. We had a good December with 4 closings, 3 condos going pending, and I have 2 offers on my desk in negotiations. 2013 came in slightly higher (and is still in 1st place), I think mostly because that was the year that prices really started rising and a lot of people who had been waiting to see things change jumped in. 2014 showed a slow but steady increase in prices and the market has really stabilized. I expect prices to continue rising this year but, it looks like they are rising at a very moderate rate for now. As the Home Port construction continues and we see other business and activity surrounding it in the coming months and years, I think that prices will start rising more quickly (My opinion - I don't know anyone with a working crystal ball). We do still have some great prices and a few have attractive financing available so if you're interested in investing, sooner is definitely better than later.

We plan on continuing our aggressive marketing and charity programs this year and I even have a few new things in the works. This month we will be set up at the Barrett Jackson Car Show and Auction at WestWorld in Scottsdale again. This will be our 3rd consecutive year at the show. It runs from the 10th through the 18th so if you have a chance, please stop by our booth and say HI. We will even have a new wall calendar and a couple other gifts for you if you can make it. If not, I'll have some wall calendars in my office at the Sonoran Sky for you too. They're really nice and I have already had a lot of people asking me when they would be available. They just showed up so the answer is now, until they are run out...

Our food drive was a real success this year - Thanks to All of You who helped! I will gather everything up later today or tomorrow and drop it off at the DIF office so that they can distribute everything to those in need. I'll be sure to take a photo when it is all together and I will include it in next month's newsletter. I am always amazed and so appreciative of how people step up to help in our charity events and food drives. I hope that you realize that you really do make a huge difference in people's lives by participating.

Road construction continues, the Home Port project is moving at a good pace, Christmas was great, and the festivities from last night's parties and fireworks were just winding down as the sun was coming up this morning. The recent cold snap doesn't seem to have affected our tourism or the enthusiasm of the Holidays. There are a lot of people in town this week and there is a lot going on all week, cold or not.

Enjoy your month, come to Rocky Point if you can, and if you need anything don't hesitate to ask. Let me put my experience and expertise to work for you, and remember, as always, I'm here full time and I am more than happy to help you with whatever you need, whether Sonoran Resorts related or not.

Just give me a call or send me an email any time and I will do my very best to help you. If I can't help you myself, I'm sure that I can point you in the right direction and help find you someone who can.

Puerto Peñasco Home Port Project Moving Right Along

Work is moving forward as the stacks of blocks continue to grow and they are piled on top of each other in preparation of being transported to the port and positioned as needed to expand on the existing breakwater. Cement trucks running back and forth from the location is an almost constant activity and we have seen the hustle and bustle of workers every day right up through Christmas Eve and they were back at it the day after Christmas.

Remember, this work is not happening at the pier itself. That will come soon enough, when they have enough of the blocks completed to begin transporting them to their final resting place as part of the Home Port. This work is being done in the large open space to the North across the road from the Sonoran Sun Resort. If you take the old road to Cholla Bay (extension of the new road past the Convention Center) you will drive right by the site. Be careful if driving down that way as there really are cement trucks flying back and forth at all hours, even past sundown.

They are building a permanent structure on the site as well but I have not confirmed exactly how that structure will be used. I'm assuming that by next month's newsletter, I will have more information to share. For now, we can all just sit back and watch as the project moves forward.

SEMARNAT agreement published in Official Journal of the Federation assigns COFETUR Federal Maritime Land Zone for Home Port

The Secretary of the Environment and Natural Resources (Semarnat) has assigned beach area of the Federal Maritime Land Zone and Land Reclaimed from the Sea (Zofemat) to the Sonoran State Tourism Commission (COFETUR). This area represents that corresponding to where the cruise ship Home Port is currently being built in Puerto Peñasco.

This designation was established in an agreement published on Dec. 10, 2014 in the Official Journal of the Federation, detailing use by COFETUR of 3,470.92 sq. meters located at kilometer 3.7 of Sandy Beach in this municipality, for a breakwater to the east and to the west a cruise ship terminal and pedestrian walkway.

The agreement published in the Official Journal, signed by Semarnat Director Juan José Guerra Abud, details the designation was made as the area meets official demarcation, under code No. DDPIF/SON/2009, dated October, 2009. In addition, the Sonoran Tourism Commission, through a request dated July 28, 2014, solicited use of the area described above for use of a breakwater and cruise ship terminal with pedestrian walkway. Furthermore, on May 28, 2013, the Puerto Peñasco Office of Urban Development, Public Projects, Ecology, and Zofemat issued an acknowledgment accrediting compatibility for use of soil for the request made by the Sonoran Tourism Commission.

On these bases, and following technical opinions obtained from the Office on Comprehensive Management of Coastal

Environments and the Office of Demarcation, Registry, and Fiscal Instruments, the General Office of the Federal Maritime Land Zone and Coastal Environments determined the request of the Sonoran Tourism Commission meets technical and environmental guidelines as required under the law in effect.

Therefore, and based on provisions of the General Law of National Assets, federal goals are being met to provide optimum use of federal property by granting federal, state, and municipal public offices with properties as required to address public services in as much as possible.

The Official publication details that an area of 3,470.92 sq. meters of beach in the federal maritime land zone and land reclaimed from the sea at kilometer 3.7 on Sandy Beach in the municipality of Puerto Peñasco is granted to the service of the Sonoran Tourism Commission for use to launch a breakwater to the east and cruise ship terminal and pedestrian walkway to the west.

It clarifies this agreement only confers the Sonoran Tourism Commission the right to use the area for fulfillment of the objective indicated in the first article of said instrument, but does not transfer the property nor create any real right in favor of the Commission.

The Secretary of the Environment and Natural Resources cites it may once again demarcate the area at any time, therefore coordinates of the vertex, directions and distances of the polygons may be modified.

Semarnat emphasizes in the event the Sonoran Tourism Commission were to use the area for something other than that foreseen in the agreement, without prior authorization of the Secretary of the

Environment and Natural Resources, or cease to use or need it, said asset along with all its improvements and accessions would be removed from its service in order to be managed by Semarnat.

The official agreement issued on Nov. 5, 2014, also indicates within the attributes of the Secretary of the Environment and Natural Resources is that of strictly monitoring compliance with the same. The agreement itself was to enter into effect on the day following publication in the Official Journal of the Federation, which occurred on December 10th.

The following information and photos are of a recent first hand account by Russ Black of Peñasco Recreation:

"I went to the block making facility today on my way back from a project in La Cholla. Arturo (chief of security) kindly explained to me that the company building the Port Blocks is a specialty company from Monterrey, Nuevo Leon, Mex. They have built ports pretty much everywhere in Mexico and around the globe. They know what they are doing.

Management is from Monterrey, several dozen from what I gathered. However 60 + people working on this project are from Peñasco. I asked bluntly....."are they being paid a dignified wage?" His reply was quick....yes! After a probationary period their wage is set according to their work ethics. If they are found lacking they are cut loose."

"So far they have produced 300-350 large building blocks, and another 600-800 decorative blocks - the center will be filled with the blastings from Black Mountain. The blocks are constructed to allow water to flow freely from one side of the jetty to the other."

"From what I see it looks like a great project with direct benefit to the people here in Peñasco. That's the construction side. The other side, the business side, I don't pretend to know who the players are. I have heard that these new ships will be brand new cruisers - flagged in Mexico and small - like 1500 passengers. If they are smart they will do what they can to make this whole multi million dollar project work. The whole thing can be built and the whole thing can fall apart in the interim with jackasses who want everything their way.....We don't know that right now. What we have is a successful project being done beyond first world standards in a ( dare I say it) second world theater with a few naysayers hoping for disaster, which I for one do not perceive."
Guaymas Welcomes Statendam Cruise Ship

On December 8th, the Statendam of Holland America cruise line arrived in Guaymas, Sonora carrying 1,258 tourists and 560 crew members. This is the second time the Statendam has made its way to Guaymas, and expectations are for such dockings to provide an economic boost to the area of over 1.5 million pesos.

Homero Ríos Murrieta, Deputy Coordinator of Sonoran Tourism (COFETUR), welcomed the tourists as they disembarked from the ship, which had most recently come from Loreto, Baja California, with upcoming stops in Mazatlán and Puerto Vallarta.

It is estimated about 60% of cruise goers disembark at the Guaymas stop in order to see the city, eat, as well as to buy local souvenirs and art. This, explained the state official, represents an economic influx of over 1.5 million pesos.

Cruise goers on the Statendam began their travels in San Diego, CA, with stops in Los Cabos, La Paz and Loreto, Baja California Sur before arriving in Guaymas.

The COFETUR representatives expressed they are pleased as steps taken by Governor Guillermo Padrés with cruise lines have been successful. Cruise lines are becoming more confident in Sonora and traveling through the Sea of Cortez.

During the present State administration, 11 cruise ships have made their way to Guaymas, representing an economic impact to date of 17 million pesos, detailed Ríos Murrieta.

He added in the coming year the Sonoran Government would continue working with cruise lines to promote the Sea of Cortez route, or rather to ensure arrival in Guaymas, as well as to Puerto Peñasco where the Home Port is currently under construction.

Peacemakers and Thieves Unite at January Jam in Rocky Point

As a bitter cold front converges on the U.S. from the Pacific Ocean, it's time to pack panchos and sombreros and head south toward warmer Mexican latitudes for Roger Clyne & The Peacemaker's (RCPM) annual January Jam VII, to be held January 23-24th, 2015.

Joining RCPM will be Tramps & Thieves, veterans of past Circus Mexicus weekends and Valley favorites from Phoenix. Tramps and Thieves will kick things off Friday night at 8pm outside at Banditos, located behind both the Sonoran Spa and Sonoran Sea Resorts. RCPM will follow at 9:30, playing an entire set of cover songs. The set theme will be, "Anything goes", according to Roger Clyne. Last year, RCPM covered songs from bands representing all types of genres including Fleetwood Mac, Social Distortion, Doobie Brothers, Split Enz, Led Zeppelin and The Violent Femmes to name a few. The band began rehearsals earlier in December and promises to put their unique spin on a different list of songs this year.

Saturday night takes on a more traditional look as RCPM returns to JJ's Cantina in Cholla Bay for the 7th year in a row. In 2008, following an intense eight day recording session in Cholla Bay, which spawned songs for the album Turbo Ocho, the band announced an impromptu show on their website to be held the following Saturday at JJ's Cantina. A few hundred fans made the journey and January Jam was born.

Jason Boots will get the party started at 5pm. Fans are encouraged to get there early as tables and seating are first come, first served. In keeping with tradition, RCPM will take the stage at sunset for what is always a long and surprised-filled set in one of the most intimate settings they play all year. In a new twist, PH Naffah will return to the stage with James Gerard and the Serious Moonlight following RCPM at approximately 9:30pm. Members also include Jim Swafford, Chris Kantor, Dave Entz and J. Scott Howard.

Earlier on Saturday, Naffah will host his Mexican Moonshine Tequila Golf Classic Saturday morning at the Links at Las Palomas. Using a 9-hole format with great prizes, lunch and raffle items, the tournament raises money for local Rocky Point charities each year. Non-golfers are also encouraged to come and support the event. Registration and information can be found at the band's merchandise website www.peacetimegoods.com .

Still haven't had enough? Jimmy Chorizo, aka Peacemaker guitarist Jim Dalton will play a free Hangover Set inside Banditos on Sunday afternoon at 1pm. A full food and drink menu will be available.

Discounted condos at both the Sonoran Spa and Sonoran Sea are available while supplies last by calling RPR Mexico at 866-483-3379 and using RPR's discount code RCC115. Las Palomas Resort is also a preferred partner and reservations can be made on their site at www.laspalomasresort.net .

Tickets for both Friday and Saturday go on sale Monday, December 29th at www.circusmexicus.net . Fans can save money by purchasing in advance a commemorative laminate with a lanyard that includes admission to both shows Friday and Saturday night. Updates for both January Jam and Circus Mexicus can be found on the site as the band inches closer to returning in June for its signature event weekend.

For more information on RCPM including how to purchase music, go to www.azpeacemakers.com . Information on Roger's premium line of Mexican Moonshine tequilas can be found at www.mexicanmoonshine.com . RCPM is an independent rock band formed in 1998 and self produces its own concerts in Rocky Point, Sonora, Mexico. 'Twas the Day Before Christmas

by Denise Ackerly - Sonoran Sun E801

A bed sheet hanging from the wood in place of a window, a skinny dog tied to the fence post, a salvaged old bucket seat from a car acting as a lounge chair, the blazing sun, and three little girls playing in the front "yard" sharing one toy and drawing in the sand. This is barrio San Rafael on Christmas Eve.

This is what poverty looks like. You can't find this barrio on the map. It's not represented. There's no running water and electricity is spotty. About 10 miles from million dollar views and condos, parents struggle to feed their kids. A perfect place for some random acts of kindness.

Santa and Mrs. Claus (aka Mark and Barb Olszweski) bring some Christmas cheer to the impoverished every Christmas eve. This year they had elves who helped distribute: Alicia and Eduardo Vivanco; Celie and Phil Levin; and my husband Eric, our 15-year-old Liz, and I. Mark and Barb scouted the street for children in their front yards and screeched to a halt. Barb chose the appropriate-aged gift from her trunk "toystore" while Mark (dressed as Santa) ho-ho-ho'd and hugged the kids, and we passed out toys to the thrilled children and bags of rice and beans, soaps, sewing kits, and diapers to the grateful parents.

It was hard to not cry. It was one thing to see the kids run to hug Santa, but when they ran to us and hugged our legs, I'd lose it. They never expected Santa to visit and surprise their family with gifts, especially in an old Honda leading a convoy of two more cars. I feel blessed to have been part of it.

Mark and Barb have lived in Penasco for over 17 years, and don't limit their charitable activities to only once a year. They continually distribute food and clothing, head "Adopt-a-Classroom" to help supply students with school supplies, began a community center to give kids a supportive environment where they learn skills and have fun, and recently created "Sponsor-a-Student" which financially assists motivated kids to continue their education into high school. By breaking the cycle, these children have a chance to get jobs and get out of the barrio. Mark and Barb want to help long-term, not just provide a temporary fix.

Any and all help is appreciated. Money, time, food, school supplies, clothes and toys will all be gratefully accepted. Nothing goes to waste and nothing is too small. Please visit their website http://www.rockypointclassroom.com/ for more information.

Mexico's Congress Votes To Ban Animal Circuses

In a historic vote on Thursday, one which marks a significant step toward preventing exploitation of animals, Mexico's congress approved a new measure to ban animal circuses nationwide - joining a small, but growing list of nations which have already outlawed the controversial practice.

According to news site Milenio, Mexican lawmakers voted by an overwhelming majority to amend the existing General Wildlife Act to stipulate that the use of specimens of wildlife in circuses shall be prohibited. In their opinion, Congress wrote that "the use of animals in circuses provides no educational value to viewers," saying that the animals exhibited in circuses only perform "because they fear what may happen if they do not."

This nationwide ban comes after six states, and the federal district of Mexico City, had already passed similar legislation on a local level.

Terra News reports that the ban would impact 592 circuses operating around the country. As government officials noted, however, the passage of the ban is not intended to put circuses out of business, but to have them to continue "without affecting other species."

Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto hasn't said whether he will sign the bill, but as the Associated Press reports, it has been endorsed by an allied political party. States will then have 180 days to come into compliance with the new ban.

Once signed into law, Mexico will become the 10th country to have passed nationwide bans on animal circuses nationwide. Meanwhile, across the border in the United States, similar measures to stop animals from being exploited for entertainment have been piecemeal by comparison.

This week, for example, officials in Oakland, Calif. approved a ban on bullhooks - a sharp instrument used to intimidate elephants into performing - as a de facto way of preventing circuses from operating within the city. The move is considered a step forward, albeit woefully lacking in urgency; Oakland's ban will only go into effect in 2017.

Steps are being made toward a more comprehensive change in regards to animal circuses, however. Earlier this year, U.S. Congressman Jim Moran introduced the Traveling Exotic Animal Protection Act, a bill which would restrict the use of exotic, non-domestic animals touring with circuses across the country.

Pemex Franchises will be Overhauled
  pemex

Pemex gas stations will unveil a new look next year in preparation for 2017, when its franchisees face competition for the first time.

Modernized gas stations will offer banking, shopping marts and even cellphone recharging stations, reports Sipse.

Other modernization measures include re-launching Pemex's brand image and training employees in improving customer service as competitors offer the possibility of cheaper self-service stations.

Some measures have already been implemented, including a training program that will eventually reach more than 26,000 managers, supervisors and sales staff, Lozoya said.

Pemex is also restructuring the board room. CEO Emilio Lozoya said Pemex would continue "in permanent evolution"

"That's a very new way to talk about a company that has been an untouchable Mexican crown jewel for nearly eight decades," opined a blogger at the Financial Times.

Lozoya has said that the company's network of 10,900 service stations, which serve a country with 25 million automobiles, must not only offer the highest quality fuel but also top-of-the-line service to more demanding customers.

Last December's energy overhaul allows private players into Mexico's oil industry for the first time since it was nationalized in 1938.

But how to sell its new image looks as tricky as marketing Marmite, the British tar-colored yeast extract loved and loathed in equal measure, writes Financial Times.

"Pemex has to win the future," said Rodolfo Milesi, head of the London-based consultancy Branding Latin America.

Pemex has recently worked with Ogilvy Public Relations on its image, but don't expect a new logo to replace its emblem of an eagle and a drop of oil in Mexico's green, white and red colors, said Rolando Galindo, investor relations manager for Pemex.

"The logo is the last thing I'd change," agrees Julio Madrazo, a Mexican consultant. "Branding is not just about changing the logo. A true brand becomes a culture - it's the experience. [They need] a whole different corporate culture."

Milesi told the Financial Times that he fears Pemex is not proactive enough in overhauling its image.

"I don't think they realize the importance of reconquering the hearts of Mexicans - or can see business opportunities," he said.

Meet Steve Schwab, Founder and President of Sea Side Reservations

Lots of people around Puerto Peñasco know Steve Schwab. Some of them from his company, Seaside Reservations, some from his charity, Peñasco Children's Foundation, and some from his restaurant, Colin's Cantina. He also owns the convenience stores at both the Sonoran Sun and the Sonoran Sky. Whether you know Steve or not, his story is certainly interesting and inspirational.

Steve really has become an anchor here in Rocky Point and he is the Founder and President of Sea Side Reservations, a company that grew from the humble beginnings of Cyndi's Beach Home Rentals right here in Rocky Point over 14 years ago. Steve has guided Sea Side to it's current status of managing large properties as well as individual rentals in 9 cities across Mexico and Arizona. It's really no accident that when the self-described "Property Management Nerd" puts his innovative mind, strict work ethic, and team attitude to work, we all see impressive results that improve the vacation experience for the tourist as well as for the property owners willing to share their dream properties with others.

This work ethic and attention to detail started several years earlier when Steve served as a US Army Airborne Ranger and later as an intelligence analyst in the US Army National Guard while he was attending New Mexico State University. During his time in college, he also served as the President of Alpha Tau Omega until he graduated in 2000 and moved to Rocky Point.

Almost immediately after Steve arrived in Rocky Point, he saw a great business opportunity in Cyndi's Beach Home Rentals. He dove into the business and took on the task of improving how things worked, as well as adding some breakthrough ideas which turned the small local business into an ever growing successful property management company spread across Mexico. Identifying some key issues and challenges of the property management system showed a need to streamline the entire process from scratch. To address this challenge, he became partners in a property management software company specifically to create and overcome these issues by creating brand new technology and applying them to his business.

Developing a state of the art software management system for controlling booking, property inventory control, and property maintenance, while making it as simple as using your computer, ipad, or cell phone was the goal. Ultimately, at Sea Side Reservations, all housekeepers and maintenance personnel are armed with ipads loaded with the Seaside's exclusive apps that allow the staff to report, photograph, and update any details and property needs in real time when performing their duties.

Steve believes that another main reason that Sea Side has done so well is because his employees are the ones who make the the biggest difference between a good experience and a bad one. Constantly encouraging self-improvement and rewarding outstanding performance is one of Steve's ways of leading his employees. One good example of this system is the acknowledgment and bonus system for the housekeepers. When a housekeeper working for Sea Side Reservations does an exemplary job, they are awarded a special pin which they proudly wear on their uniform. It requires a minimum of 10 outstanding reviews by clients or customers in order to even be considered for the award. And, of course, beyond the recognition and honor of being considered one of the best, there other perks for them as well.

Another very important benefit for clients and for Sea Side employees is the education and training program that he has implemented into his business. Fondly called "Sea Side University", every employee must attend classes to learn about the hospitality industry and the procedures and attitudes needed to be the best at customer service. But, beyond that requirement, the program offers GED classes, English language training, advancement training, and other specialty education as needed, all free of charge for their employees.

Finally, the company understands very well the need to give back to the community. This belief and commitment was cornerstone from the very beginning. Steve founded the Puerto Peñasco Childrens Foundation which later expanded to include the more encompassing Mexico Children's Foundation to help our next generation get a leg up in a sometimes very difficult financial or family environment here in Mexico. And, Steve isn't one to just pass the buck. In order to promote his charity and help raise money for the cause, he is now in his 13th year of actually walking (yes, walking) 200 miles, all the way from Phoenix to Rocky Point, and all donations go to the needs of local kids. That type of commitment takes real dedication and resolve.

City Donates Land for Fishing Research Center

City donates land to INAPESCA

Mayor Gerardo Figueroa Zazueta sustains support of his administration in favor of fishing sector of Puerto Peñasco.

In early December, City Council authorized donation of land measuring 7,678.54 sq.mts. to the National Fishing Institute (INAPESCA) with the objective of building a fishing and aquaculture research center in Puerto Peñasco.

This comes from the commitment Mayor Gerardo Figueroa Zazueta assumed during a meeting on past October 24th with Gilberto Estrada Duran, Regional Center Director of fishing investigation in Guaymas.

During their fifty-fifth extra session, City Council voted in favor of the initiative presented by City Trustee Herme Damian Velazquez Lopez. The research center will have a regional impact of vital importance on fishing activities.

INAPESCA, a decentralized sectored entity of the Ministry of Agriculture, Ranching, Rural Development, Fishing and Feed (SAGARPA), plans construction of the fishing and aquatic research facility, to begin early next year.

Día de los Reyes Magos

January the 6th is a special day in Mexico. Known as 'El Dia de Reyes' (Three Kings Day), this holiday represents the height of the Christmas season. The date marks the culmination of the twelve days of Christmas and commemorates the three wise men who traveled from afar, bearing gifts for the infant baby Jesus. The children of Mexico in particular look forward to this holiday as traditionally, gifts are exchanged on this date, not on Christmas day.

In Mexico and many other Latin American countries, Santa Claus doesn't hold the cachet that he does in the United States. Rather, it is the three wise men who are the bearers of gifts, who leave presents in or near the shoes of small children. The holiday is also known by the name of the Epiphany which dates back to the 4th century. A grand feast would be held on this day to honor the occasion of Jesus' baptism and to pay homage to the three wise men.

Many believe mysterious events preceded Jesus' birth with perhaps the most notable being the appearance of the Star of Bethlehem. This new star appeared in the evening sky just prior to the arrival of Jesus. Three wise men or Magi as they were then known, whose names were Gaspar, Melchior and Balthasar, traveled a far distance to pay homage to the Christ child. They brought with them fine gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh.

Three Kings Day remains an important holiday for the people of Mexico. In addition to the gift-giving aspect of the day there is also a culinary treat that is specific to the holiday. Known as 'Rosca de Reyes' (King's Cake), this holiday dessert offers much in the way of symbolism. Shaped round to signify a king's crown, this sweet bread holds a special surprise. Baked inside is a small plastic figurine representing the baby Jesus. Whoever finds this token is obligated to host an upcoming party for the occasion of 'Dia de la Candelaria' (Candlemas Day) which occurs each year on February 2nd.

The effigy of the baby Jesus, hidden inside the cake, represents another aspect of the holiday. The reason Jesus is 'hidden' inside the bread is to symbolize how in life, the Christ child's birth location also needed to remain secret, in order that his life be spared. The ruler of Jerusalem at the time, King Herod, had been appraised of the mystical signs that indicated the new King of Jerusalem was soon to be born. Herod's reaction to these predictions was swift and horrible. He ordered his minions to murder all male infants recently born in Bethlehem. However, as destiny would have it, Mary and Joseph found their lodgings in a manger, not an inn. Herod's henchmen didn't think to look for an infant in such a location.

In many Mexican families (including ours) multiple baby Jesus' are put in the cake and each person who receives one in their piece is assigned something to bring to the party on February 2nd. This spreads the responsibility a little.

Traditionally, the meal served on this special day is tamales accompanied by hot chocolate. This makes for a perfectly quintessential Mexican meal and one that is enjoyed by everyone in attendance.

Community Responds to Help New Hemodialysis Unit

The president of DIF Puerto Peñasco, Mrs. Rafaela  Felix Figueroa received donations of two medical grade reclining armchairs from Dave Morilyn Nox from the state of California, but but who lives full time in Puerto Penasco The chairs will be used in the reception area of the clinic.

Meanwhile, the Association of Professionals and Business Women president, Ana Morales Reyna, helped the cause by donating three medical examination beds which are very necessary for the doctors and nurses when caring for the patient upon admission to the clinic.

Dialysis Machine Acquired Through Donations

Curtis and Angela Weitnauer of the U.S. recently donated $5,000 dollars to ongoing efforts to equip the city's first dialysis center. This, along with other donations, has allowed the center to acquire the first of four machines for the center.

Mrs. Rafaela Félix de Figueroa, local President of the office on Integral Family Development (DIF), expressed that undoubtedly this is an important donation as it involves costly equipment. She noted the project has come about thanks to the noble heart of many people, both locally and from abroad.

"I am truly grateful to the Weitnaurs for believing in this project, as well as the work we've been doing in leading the Puerto Peñasco DIF. My acknowledgement for their noble heart, as well as for all those who have joined this project," she expressed.

Mrs. Félix de Figueroa made reference to the extensive list of people and businesses that have provided both financial and in kind donations to the Dialysis Center project, including the "Caring Hearts" Foundation, and donations from Sonoran Resorts, among many others.  She also recognized the work of Francisco Bercovich which led to the Weitnaur's donation, who is originally from the state of Minnesota.

Mark Mulligan to Perform at Caribbean Parrot January 2nd

Mark Mulligan is a favorite among those in the know around Rocky Point. He will be performing on January 2nd at 5:00 p.m. at the Carribean Parrot on Sinaloa, just down the street from Reggies and Al Capones. His "trop rock" style is a kind of mix between Jimmy Buffet and James Taylor and he never disappoints. The show is free but donations are gladly accepted at the entrance. Mark and the Parrot will give all donations received to local charity.

Santa Claus Club Yard Sale and Chili Cook-Off January 17

Cholla Bay, Mexico

Over 30 years ago, John Fowler and a few others decided to help the children of Rocky Point and the surrounding community who live in the barrios by having a promotion to give bicycles and toys to about 40 children at Christmas. Over the years the Santa Claus Club was formed and the non-profit organization now serves over 5000 children annually. The program now runs year round and they work with many local organizations in Rocky Point including several Orphanages, the Red Cross and the local Catholic Church.

The Santa Claus Club is comprised 100% of volunteer members and the cost to be a club member is only $20 annually. You can count on 100% of all dues, monetary contributions, and item donations to be given to the people who need it the most in Rocky Point. They operate with no overhead or facilities costs and no one gets paid for their services. We would love for you to join our club but you do not have to be a member to donate or participate in the events!

The majority of all item donations is shuttled from the USA with the exception of food. Most food is purchased in Rocky Point with the monetary contributions and member dues. If you are ever in Rocky Point, you can drop off donations at the Baja Hotel or JJ's Cantina in Cholla Bay. Make sure to mark it with Santa Claus Club. If you aren't headed south of the border no problem! Just give us a call or email us and we will arrange for your donations to be picked up. You can also contact us here on this site on the "Contact Us" page.

Each year the Santa Claus Club sponsors various fund raisers including:

  • Chili Cookoffs
  • Softball Tournaments
  • Garage Sales
  • Auction
  • More!

Boulevard to Convention Center to be Named in Honor of Cliftons

  Press Release

Given their tireless humanitarian and social work over the past 25 years within the community of Puerto Peñasco, the City Council recently approved naming the boulevard in front of the Convention Center in honor of Rodger and Jeanette Clifton.

A petition signed by numerous community members in favor of the initiative was sent to Mayor Gerardo Figueroa Zazueta, which was then submitted to discussion and approval by City Council during their twenty-seventh ordinary session held on Nov. 28th.

The document expressed the Cliftons, who are originally from the U.S., feel they are Mexican in both heart and soul as here in Puerto Peñasco they have found the ideal spot not just to live but to launch into their tireless social, humanitarian, and selfless work.

For the Cliftons, "giving is much more enriching than receiving," and for the last 25 years they have supported an infinite number of people and institutions across the community while also dedicating themselves to help the most vulnerable groups in society.

The numerous programs in which the Cliftons have participated and offered assistance include: "José Dávalos Valdivia" Casa Hogar, Amores de Peñasco children's shelter, the construction of more than 1,000 homes for an equal number of families in Puerto Peñasco, and much, much more.

In addition, the Cliftons have provided economic support and equipment to the local Red Cross, Fire Department, and the Office on Integral Family Development (DIF), and helped various families truly in need. They have also supported a number of non-governmental organizations and have been strong promoters in raising awareness about the environment and the eradication of trash (and flies).

The request to name the boulevard in their honor was promoted by a broad sector of civil society, organizational leaders, boat builders, business owners, professional associations and administrative boards from various higher education institutions in Puerto Peñasco, among many others.

Adventures in Rocky Point are Even Better When You Know the Tides

Knowing the times for the high and low tides in Rocky Point can be a huge help when planning activities on or near our Sea of Cortez. Some shore fishermen like to follow the tides on the way out or in, blue water fishing often sees a spike right at tide change, and if you're planning to do some clamming, it is always best to follow the water line as the tide goes out.

Launching or retrieving a boat in Cholla Bay can be difficult or even impossible at a big low tide time. And, then there are the tidepools. One of the most interesting activities around Rocky Point is tidepool exploring and, of course, in order to explore tidepools, it's nice to know where the tide is.

The photo above is from the wall of my home office showing a tide calendar purchased from CEDO (I highly recommend them), a regular clock, and a tide clock. Normal tide clocks actually do not keep accurate tide times for the Sea of Cortez but if you just recalibrate it from the tide calendar every couple weeks, it is definitely close enough. I like the tide clock because it lets you know if the tide is coming or going and about where it is at in just a glance. If you want more specific times, just look at the regular clock and compare it with the tide calendar. Simple and effective.

If you've ever walked along the beach and seen a rocky pool filled by the tide, it's more than just a coincidence. Tide pools are more than just puddles - they're entire ecosystems that depend on the ebb and flow of the ocean.

While tide pools differ widely around the world, most have some variety of anemone, sea star, shellfish, sponges and plants. The vibrant life that exists within these pools can only thrive in high and low tide zones, while tide pools that dry out usually only foster lichens and barnacles.

Tide pools offer a fun opportunity for the whole family to explore and learn more about marine life and ecosystems in general, as they exist in the intertidal zone of the ocean, squarely between the shore and the deeper, less accessible parts of the ocean.

This northern region of the Sea of Cortez experiences one of the greatest tidal shifts in the world. Twice a day, the ocean will rise and fall as much as 24 vertical feet. The entire area around Rocky Point has been of scientific interest for marine biologists for years. This extreme tidal shift makes for excellent tide pooling as many of the beach areas reveal large tide pools at low tide.

A unique natural spectacle can be seen along the beaches of Puerto Peñasco with the remarkable rise and drop in tides in just a single day.

Those who have just visited our port for the first time are most certainly struck by our tide phenomena, having the opportunity to see how the tides come in to cover the beaches and then retreat to a far distance. This natural marvel occurs in the Upper Gulf of California from Puerto Peñasco and San Felipe up to the Rio Colorado Delta, which possesses one of the most extreme tide ranges in the world.

The drastic tide changes in the region occur when the tide enters into the narrow strip of the Upper Gulf, causing the sea to rise to a high level. As the tide goes down, the water begins to filter out, much like the way of water rising and falling in a bathtub. This type of movement occurs where shallow bays exist, such as Bay of Fundy in Canada, and of course here along our beaches in the Upper Gulf where two high and two low tides can be registered in a single day.

Tides are the result of many factors occurring at the same time, the most important of these being the gravitational forces of the sun and moon to the earth, and the centrifugal force of the earth's rotation. The biggest tide changes, often called "live tides" (or high tides), take place approximately every fifteen days both during a new moon and the full moon when the sun, moon and earth align. When the moon and sun are not in alignment "flat tides" exist both in the morning and evening.

The extreme tidal movement in the Upper Gulf of California guides the movement of water near the coast, and also influences the migration and feeding patterns of sea mammals, birds, and fish. It also directs activities of fishermen as the tides determine when, where, and how they can fish. In essence, the tides dictate any activity for beach visitors in the Upper Gulf, who are subject to its ebb and flow.

Christmas at Sea

Contributed by Guillermo Munro Palacio, anecdote of Héctor Munro Palacio  Photo: Guillermo Munro Palacio - via RockyPoint360

We set sail for shrimp in direction of Islas Encantadas precisely at noon on December 18th, 1958. The ship was the Río Yaqui, of don Julián Bustamante; on this occasion shipholder Jorge Robles, "el Pizcachas", had to stay at port to care for his wife for whom Dr. Roberto Gracida had recommended absolute bed rest for her pregnancy. Jorge stayed to take care of his wife and small children, and his cousin Beto "El Pescado" Contreras went in his place. The engine man was Luis Irineo, the cook was "el Maestro" Moro, and in the crew we were Santos Gutiérrez, Yeto Araiza, Beto Moro, Ramón el Brevas, and myself, Héctor Munro Palacio.

It was clear we would not be spending Christmas at home and el Maestro had made preparations to celebrate Christmas dinner, as was the custom, with tamales and menudo. We had taken all the ingredients to prepare the dinner, and so it was.

Despite it being winter, we worked five days and nights in incredibly warm calm waters.

On the dawn of December 23rd, the Caterpillar engine of the Río Yaqui ground to a halt.

That same morning, at 10, Luis Moreno "el Tiracortito" received our emergency call over the radio and towed us to the nearest and safest spot, which was San Luis Gonzaga, a small bay surrounded by cliffs and a single entry; so calm that not even the coffee spilled. No tides came in, it was a beautiful and gentle spot. The only thing at that time was a straw ramada, said to belong to an American who would come to spend the winters there, yet the ramada was empty.

We anchored there on the 23rd, and at dawn on December 24, 1958, the aroma of recently strained coffee reached us. El Maestro Moro assigned each of us a task to prepare for the Christmas dinner that night, the longest and most beautiful evening in it being the day and night on which our Christ Savior Jesus was born.

On the starboard side, el Maestro Moro and I decided to clean part of the stomach for the menudo while on the port side of the stern Yeto Araiza and el Brevas did the same, though they spent more time complaining than working.

There on the boat's hatchway (which we used as a table) Beto Moro and Santos Gutiérrez prepared the masa for tamales while Luis Irineo set to cleaning the hooves for the menudo.

Very much in his role, "El Pescado" Contreras cooked up the ingredients: beef, chile colorado, and other things that would be needed. El Maestro Moro was an expert in these necessities as he was originally from Imuris, Sonora, a pueblo which is famous for its Sonoran flavor, much as Terrenate, San Ignacio and Magdalena de Kino, Curcurpe and others in the area. El Maestro and his wife were also experts in preparing traditional buñuelos pastries. We followed his instructions to the letter.

It must have been around 10 in the morning and, as we were all occupied with what we were doing, we didn't realize when a 16" fiberglass boat came into the bay with two North Americans on board.

They came in and alongside us; we offered them coffee. They went right to helping us with the preparations and were having a good time. The two Americans, who were about twenty or twenty-two years old, didn't speak Spanish and we didn't speak English. Yet, we joked through signing, gestures, and mimicking. In as much as we could communicate, we invited them to dinner that evening, which they apparently understood since they stayed through to the end.

The night fell on that precious Christmas Eve day and to all our surprise el Maestro Moro, without saying a word, had prepared two pots full of cinnamon and about a liter of 96 grade alcohol - though he pulled another out of his sleeve. We began preparing the tasty warm cups, which lifted our spirits with each drink.

Meanwhile, Luis Irineo began to wash out a small box with Fab. It was the box where we stored the gloves to pull apart shrimp and the sticks we used to select them...

So What Exactly Does Mexico Export?

Interactive tool offers a good look at what Mexico - and others - export and import.

Mexico has grown to become a global manufacturing powerhouse and one of the world's major exporters: the value of this country's exports was US $380.1 billion last year, up from $349 billion the year before.

From vegetables ($5.4 billion) to electronic equipment ($77 billion), and from telephones ($10.1 billion) to petroleum products ($45.9 billion), the list of exported goods is long and diverse.

How long and how diverse?

The graphic gives an idea of the extent and diversity of the list, but a visit to the website it comes from will give you an interesting and interactive guide to Mexico's exports, and those of other countries, thanks to Harvard University.

It also provides the dollar value of each, the most recent data being 2012.

Called The Atlas of Economic Complexity, the tool is not just about exports, but imports as well. If you want to know the value of trade in automotive products, electric motors or even frozen fruits and nuts, the answers are all there.

Finding Paradise

by Sandy Spain via Rocky Point Times

Retired

No surprise, retirement means different things to different people. Whatever your goal in retirement the first thing is always a lot of decisions to make. What to do with that spare time and where to live are the ones most repeated to me. So many of you decided the where to live one was a pretty easy as you already had a beach house and decided to move part time or maybe full time to Puerto Peñasco. Others started looking around and, due to prior personal experience or suggestions from friends or family, decided to check out our little piece of paradise and liked it enough to buy, rent or bring your RV.

What do you do?

Everyone told me how bored I would be and friends couldn't believe that I was retiring at 59 after often holding two jobs and raising my sons alone after the death of my husband. I'll let you in on my little secret, I wanted to be bored - I was tired! The idea of doing nothing by the beach sounded like heaven. Well they were right, I can't do nothing, it is just not in me so I looked around and got involved. If, like me you are looking to help those less fortunate that yourself, there is the monthly free medical clinic (contact through Family of God church), Esperanza para Nueva Vida Community Center, Amores child crisis center, Esperanza children's home, Casa Hogar for the elderly, Two Fish Ministries providing food in several locations throughout the community, San Peregrino Cancer Support Group, Adopt-a-Student, Adopt-a-Classroom, the Pinata Workshop, Paralympico (Special Olympics), and the Wheel Chair Basketball Team just to name a few. There are events throughout the year supporting these and other worthy efforts and they can always use volunteers. If you don't know who to contact to get involved, contact me through the Rocky Point Times (rockypointtimes@yahoo.com).

Alone is not Lonely

The other fear constantly expressed to me was that being a widow when I retired and moving to Peñasco was going to result in my being very lonely. Well not so. What I found here was that you can be as busy as you want to be. Don't let being alone stop you. A great place to start is by joining one of the two singles clubs in town. They both have happy hours, breakfasts and other events. Single or married, stop in at the weekly Connection happy hour. Stop in at the American Legion. Don't let the term happy hour stop you, drinking isn't required as many of us have ice tea! You will find the information you need in this paper on the Clubs and Organizations page.

Go and do

So if you find yourself retired here full or part time, it is easy to find so much to do that you can be busier than you were when you worked. Of course not everyone wants to be that busy so they pursue their own hobbies and leisure activities. Peñasco has fishing and all the water sports. We have groups that play darts, dominoes, cards, bingo and bunco, horseshoes. Cholla Bay and Playa Bonita RV Park have continuous organized events and they welcome participants from outside their area. Get the Rocky Point Times and also go to Rocky Point 360 on line and find out what's happening in town. Another great benefit of living here are the holidays. You will find celebrations for both Mexican and American holidays! There is the Mermaid Market, Bike Week, fishing tournaments, off-road events, environmental wonders such as the Pinacates and the estuaries and all types of exercise programs like zumba, water aerobics and yoga. There are also several gyms in town.

There's more

I have certainly not named everything you can do in this town or every way that you can help. More of my favorite things are: to attend the ladies fund raising group, Mariposas Sociales, the wonderful Red Hat luncheons and the movies (yes we have movies in English with reasonable ticket and snack bar prices). For me paradise is not complete without food and shopping and we do have some of the best! Not to be forgotten - beach combing, sunset watching and star gazing, again some of the best you will find in this world.

If you are not already retired in Puerto Peñasco or thinking about it - put it on your to-do list.

Easy Chili Colorado

A rich and flavorful red stew with chunks of tender beef. Serve with fresh flour tortillas for the ultimate comfort food to keep you warm during these cold months.

Ingredient:
  • 8 dried red chiles (such as Guajillo, California or New Mexico) rehydrated and ground into a paste *see below
  • 3lb beef roast with enough water to cover
  • 1 can beef broth
  • 1 can tomato sauce
  • 4 cloves of garlic, peeled and finely diced
  • 1 tablespoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons lard or oil for frying
Preparation:

Simmer the beef in a large pot for 2-3 hours or until it is fork tender. This can also be done in a crock pot during the day. Remove the beef from the water, and drain the water out of the pot. Add the lard or oil into the pot over medium/high heat. Cut or pull the beef into bite sized pieces and fry them in the oil briefly. (This step can be skipped for a lower fat version.) Add the beef broth, tomato sauce, seasoning and chile paste to the pot and simmer for 30 minutes. Serve with steaming hot flour tortillas and a side of chopped white onion and chopped cilantro leaves.

Rehydrating Dried Chiles:

Pick dried chiles that have no tears or broken pieces. Use whole chiles that look fresh. Rinse off any excess dust or grime under cool water. Pat dry then cut the top off of each chile and then slit it down the middle. Shake out the seeds, using your fingers or a spoon to dislodge any seeds that want to stick. Peel off any excess dried veins that are lighter in color and run in a line down the inside.

Heat a comal (or griddle) over medium/high heat and roast the dried chiles for 2-3 minutes. Turn them often to avoid burning them. Then you're going to cover the chiles in hot water and let them soak for about 30 minutes. Remove the chiles from the water and place the chiles in a blender with about 1/4 cup of water or the soaking liquid (if it is not too bitter) and puree until smooth. You can also add the garlic and oregano to the chiles while blending them. The finished puree is what you will add to the Chile Colorado.

Enjoy!
Spanish Words Spelled the Same Can Have Different Meanings Too

A homograph is a word that has the same spelling as another word but has a different sound and a different meaning:

lead (to go in front of)

lead (a metal)

wind (to follow a course that is not straight)

wind (a gust of air)

bass (low, deep sound)

bass (a type of fish)

A homophone is a word that has the same sound as another word but is spelled differently and has a different meaning:

to/two/too

there/their/they're

pray/prey

The same things happen in Spanish, although in many cases, the differences are due to an accent mark or tilde (The tilde is used to distinguish n from ñ). It takes a little extra practice to learn and understand the differences. Here are a few notable examples:

aun (even) as an adverb
aún (yet or still)

como (as or like)
cómo (how) used in a question

que (that) as a conjunction
qué (what) used in a question

mi (my)
mí (me)

tu (your)
tú (you) as a subject of a sentence

mas (but)
más (more/most)

de (of, about, from)
dé (give) the command form as in Give it to me!

te (i, you) as the object of a sentence
té (tea0 the drink

si (if)
sí (yes)

este (this) as an adjective
éste (this) as a noun

papa (potato or pope) la papa = the potato; el papa = the pope
papá (dad)

donde (where) not used in a question
dónde (where) used in a question

mama (mama) verb form meaning to suckle (often considered vulgar)
mamá (mom)

Sorry if I confused anyone. Learning a foreign language takes a lot of work - whether that foreign language is Spanish, or English.

Have a great January. Hasta el próximo mes. Happy New Year!

Here are some old photos of Puerto Peñasco. Those of you familiar with our little city should recognize many of the landmarks.

Things sure have changed around here and they continue to change today. Someday, when my kids or grand-kids look at the photos of the Home Port from today, they will probably be just as amazed as I am looking at the differences from when these photos were taken.
