Welcome to November! There has been so much going on over the past month and continuing throughout this month that I can not even begin to share it all. There are always so many activities and things to do at this time of year and the weather is absolutely perfect. The ocean is still warm enough to swim in and our Sonoran Resorts have been busy. It seems that everywhere you go, there is a wedding, a cookout, a band playing, or some other fiesta going. The weather is here and people are definitely out enjoying it.

Speaking of weather, we have had at least 6 whale sightings already this year, which is very unusual when it is still so warm out. The general consensus is that the 3 hurricanes that passed through over the past couple months must have stirred something up and brought them in close sooner than usual. Normally, we don't start seeing whales until late December or even January. It should be a great season for some whale watching.

The hurricanes that passed through our area didn't cause any damage. In fact, with the first two, we barely saw any rain. Basically just enough to bring some business to the car wash people. The last one through brought us a lot of rain and did cause some pretty major flooding in parts of town. Over all, pretty mild and Rocky Point sits in a very protected area so the chances of a hurricane doing any significant damage is pretty slim.

The Home Port project still has not picked up again but word is that they did get the approvals that they were waiting for and should start soon. Of course, December in Mexico is vacation time so even if it gets going right away, I doubt that we'll see much steady work until maybe mid January. State Tourism Director Javier Tapia Camou and those "in the know" still say that it's definitely going to happen - see story below.

Our sales department has managed to stay very busy so far this year. Although last year was an all time record and it doesn't look like we will break that record this year, we are looking to come in 2nd place this year. We continue to venture out spreading the word about Rocky Point and our very own Sonoran Resorts. In September we had 2 Agents at the AARP 2014 Life@50+ event in San Diego. In October, we gladly accepted an invitation to represent the Sonoran Resorts at the prestigious Los Lago Golf Tournament in Hermosillo, and January will be our 3rd year promoting at the Barrett Jackson Show in Scottsdale. We do try to stay busy...

Lots more to talk about and you can see some of it in the stories below. Please read the story about our annual food drive and try to do what you can. This is very important to a lot of people. All food donations will go towards the DIF food distribution and any monetary donations will go towards the completion of the dialysis center. Please help if you can.

If you need anything, don't hesitate to ask. Let me put my experience and expertise to work for you, and remember, as always, I'm here full time and I am more than happy to help you with whatever you need, whether Sonoran Resorts related or not. Just give me a call or send me an email any time and I will do my very best to help you. If I can't help you myself, I'm sure that I can point you in the right direction.

Tapia Camou Reiterates Nothing will Stop Home Port

By Jose Antonio Perez - JoinUs Monthly Magazine

After reiterating there is ongoing coordinated work and respect between the State and Municipal administrations, Sonoran Director of Tourism Promotion (COFETUR) Javier Tapia Camou underscored nothing will stop the Puerto Penasco Home Port.

Javier Tapia Camou stated despite setbacks they have encountered, resources remain firm to continue the immense project that will draw nautical tourism to the area. He did acknowledge work would be done a few months after that originally foreseen.

The State official indicated regardless of speculations, in one way or another they have overcome diverse problems that have arisen around the Home Port breakwater. He added work on the breakwater is set to start up again soon, following a two month delay.

Tapia Camou explained modifications had to be made to the initial breakwater project, given the initial rock did not meet size requirements. This will be addressed by using concrete block, which as already been approved by the corresponding authorities.

The COFETUR Director detailed resources are there, both from 2013 as well as 2014, to ensure work on the Home Port continues so that work may conclude possibly by the end of 2015, or early 2016. The project will benefit ports throughout the Sea of Cortez, and not just Puerto Penasco, he added.

Tapia Camou reiterated the Home Port remains firmly on track. With these and other prijects, there will continue to be communication and broad coordination with Puerto Penasco Mayor Gerardo Figueroa Zazueta.
14th Annual Rocky Point Bike Rally Thursday November 6 through Sunday November 9!

The 14th Annual Rocky Point Rally™, to be held across the streets of Puerto Peñasco from Nov. 6th - 9th, will certainly live up to its name as the Greatest Motorcycle Fiesta just South of the Border while raising money for local charities. Begun initially in 2001 with just 380 bikers, the November Rally quickly doubled and has become one of the most highly anticipated yearly events for bikers across Mexico and Southwestern U.S. This year, estimates point to at least 6000 bikers for the 2014 version of the Rocky Point Rally™!

Events lined up for this year include a kick-off party at Banditos with the contagious energy of Tempe based rock group The Black Moods, along with Friday night's traditional sunset Beach Fiesta on the terrace of Playa Bonita Hotel set to the country sounds of Lake Havasu native and Nashville signed singer Matt Farris, plus rock on the malecón and Calle 13 with Pachuca Blues out of Tijuana. For the first time ever, the Main Event for Saturday night will take place at Plaza Gobernadores in the Malecón where, after a day of rocking with Pachuca Blues, bikers and rally goers will continue the fiesta with the music of Matt Farris and headliner Mogollon!

Saturday will also offer the traditional Bike Parade through town, which is doubling up as a Toy Run for 2014, set to begin in front of the Red Cross at noon before winding its way through town and ending at the malecón. Bikers are asked to bring a toy for the Toy Run Parade, which will be collected and given out at a follow-up event at the beginning of January (Jan. 10) for Kings' Day - a traditional day for children to receive gifts in Mexico. Folk are of course invited to come back in January to take part in giving out all the gifts!

Activities during the 14th Annual Rocky Point Rally™ also include the traditional Mystery Poker Run, a Condo Poker Run on Friday, spectacular desert rides out to the Visitors Center of the Pinacate Biosphere Reserve, contests for Miss Rocky Point Rally with different sponsors, bike wash, a Rally Passport tour through town, and condo stay raffle prizes for folks at registration!

Registration for the 14th Rocky Point Rally™ $15 US, with 100% of registration and poker run monies going to seven local charities (for additional $5 US first 600 registrants get Rally Passport and official patch) : Red Cross, Fire Department, La Montaña school for children with special needs, José Dávalos Casa Hogar home for the elderly, and George Papanicolaou group for women's cancer testing and awareness, as well as both the Puerto Peñasco and Sonoyta offices on Integral Family Development (DIF). Since it began, the Rocky Point Rally™ has raised more than $130,000 US for these different groups.

Sonoran Resorts 4th Annual Holiday Food Drive For DIF Charity Starts Now

Once again the Holiday Season is fast approaching and the Sonoran Resorts will be collecting non-perishable food items to donate to the City of Puerto Penasco backed DIF charity. This is our 4th year and we hope and expect it to be the best yet. Please make the effort to help.

The Holiday season  is a happy one for most of us. But, remember that it is also a time when the less fortunate families of Rocky Point may not be as enthusiastic. There are many families here that won't be receiving presents and will be very thankful to just have enough food to go around. We must always remember and try to help those in need.

We are getting an early start again this year in hopes of catching some of you travelers who don't make it to town when it starts getting chilly in December. This should give you no excuses for not bringing at least a couple cans of food to donate. By the time you read this, we will have boxes in the lobbies of each of our resorts outside of the sales offices to receive your donations.

If you don't usually bring food with you when you travel, that isn't an excuse either. We have two large grocery stores plus a Bodega Aurrera (Walmart family) and a Sam's Club. You can stop by and pick up a little or a lot but, please bring something. This small expense and inconvenience to you can mean the difference of having a meal or not having a meal to many of our less fortunate families in town.

Please drop your non-perishable donations off at one of our sales offices at any of our Sonoran Resorts lobbies (Spa - Sea - Sun - Sky) on Sandy Beach. If you won't be out our way, you can drop them off at the Tourism and Visitors Office on Blvd. Freemont in the Melody Plaza or at the Rocky Point Times office off of Calle 13 behind the OXXO. If you know your way around town, you can bring donations directly to the DIF office located on Blvd. Sinaloa. I'm sure that they will even give you a tour if you'd like.

Anything that you can do to help will be greatly appreciated.

Tourism in Mexico Up 19% in First 8 Months of 2014

Tourist spending was up 18% to US $11.1 billion

International tourism numbers are way up for the first eight months of the year, according to Bank of Mexico statistics.

The Tourism Secretariat said in a news release that international visitors totaled 19.3 million during the period, up "a significant" 19% over the previous year. Total spending came in at US $11.1 billion, which was up 18%.

Just under half those visitors - 9.3 million - arrived by air, an increase of 10% over last year.

The average expenditure by visitors during the first eight months was estimated at $861, up 10% from the $780 recorded during the same period in 2013.

Mexico is one of the top 15 tourism destinations in the world, according to the Mexico Tourism Board, and received 24.2 million visitors last year.

One airline that has seen a big increase in traffic to Mexico is Lufthansa, which is forecasting that it will finish the year with a 50% increase in passengers traveling between Germany and Mexico.

The airline said economic improvement in Mexico and the initiation of a new route from Munich are contributing to the growth.

Mexico's Copper Canyon
By Russ Black - Penasco Recreation

From the sea of Cortes' to the mountains of Creel and on to the agricultural fields of Chihuahua is a magical adventure waiting for you to experience.

It took over 100 years to build; it cost millions and millions of pesos. It traverses canyons, rivers, waterfalls; there are tunnels and bridges that are true modern day marvels.

Once only occupied by the local Tarahumara Indians, this special place opened up to us in the modern world in 1961. Originally built to move products from the Sea of Cortes to the Midwest of the USA, El Chepe, the train also affords us as travelers the opportunity to see all the once hidden treasures in the Sierra Madre.

Our journey begins in the seaside town of Los Mochis Sinaloa. We board the train and head up the canyon from Sea Level to around 4000 feet. Bahuichivo is our first night in the canyon. We will take a bus into the Tarahumara land of Cerocahui. This is a small town with a rich history. Walking through the town and meeting the folks that live there will take you back to a gentler time.

Boarding the train the next day takes you to the rim side village of La Posada or Divisadero. This is the place where the true immensity of the canyon unfolds in front of you. Open your curtains in your rim side room and watch the sun come up over the massive canyon just outside.

Just a few minutes from your accommodations at La Posada is the new adventure park just recently opened in 2010. This is where you can actually ride in a gondola on an epic 8 minute ride into the canyon. If you are super adventurous you will want to ride the worlds longest zip-line right into the canyon below, there are actually 7 interconnecting zip-lines running in this part of the canyon, for hours of zip lining fun.

The final stop in the actual Copper Canyon complex is the lumber mining town of Creel Chihuahua. We are now at 7500 feet above sea level. The town is easy to walk around and of course shopping is abundant here.  It is here where you can take day tours into the canyon to places like The valley of the mushrooms, the valley of the frogs, visit Tarahumara families that still dwell in caves. It is an amazing place.

Mexico's Copper Canyon is a bucket list item. You will come away from this trip with a new description of beauty, intensity and marvel. If you get the chance to go, do not pass it up.

Sonoran Resorts Donates Equipment for Dialysis Center

       By Shandra Keesecker

Surely folks will recall the grand night of games and fun this past July at Sonoran Resorts annual Las Vegas Night for Charity! In addition to an evening of camaraderie at the tables, the evening has raised more than $10,000 US over the past two years with proceeds going to the local Office on Integral Family Development (DIF). In 2013, the Las Vegas night contribution went to help purchase water treatment equipment for the Dialysis Center (which had a total cost of nearly $20K), creation and completion of which has been a primary goal of Puerto Peñasco's First Lady and local DIF President Rafaela Félix de Figueroa. In 2014, the Las Vegas night proceeds were once again presented to the DIF and, on this occasion, went to equipping Amores de Peñasco Children's Shelter with a 5 ton AC unit, as well as for items to equip the Dialysis Center with an expected opening date of early Spring 2015.

On Wednesday, Oct. 29th, Sonoran Resorts Sales Director Jim Ringquist met with Mrs. Rafaela Félix de Figueroa, as well as DIF Director Samuel Ortega, and Municipal Health Coordinator Dr. Eliel López Urías for a tour of the Dialysis Center facility before presenting the team with the materials, all made possible from Sonoran Resorts' Las Vegas night activities. Items recently donated to help equip the city's first Dialysis Center include a clinical scale, consultation desk and accessories, stools, double sink, sensors for surgical wash, foot-pedal for both cold and hot water, among other items.

After Jim, Puerto Peñasco's First Lady, and DIF Director Ortega heard more about the equipment from Dr. López Urías, Mrs. Félix de Figueroa stated, "I am truly grateful for the support we've been given for the second year in a row. This speaks to your noble heart and, above all, reflects that you continue to believe in the work we have been doing in leading this institution."

Jim was visibly pleased and moved to be on hand for the arrival of the equipment and remarked that plans are already in the works for the 2015 Sonoran Resorts Las Vegas Night Event. He also emphasized that, along with support from the DIF, the Sonoran Resorts have currently launched their 4th Annual Holiday Food Drive and will be accepting non-perishable food items at any of the Sonoran Resorts offices through Dec. 30th.

Important Message from the Roger Clyne Camp:

VERY IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT REGARDING CIRCUS MEXICUS 2015:  Sonoran Election force us to change the dates!

Peacemakers,
We thought we had everything worked out for Circus Mexicus 2015 so we could announce it and give you plenty of time to make your plans to join us. What we didn't anticipate was Sonora would decide to hold an election on that Sunday, meaning all alcohol sales in Rocky Point will be cut off at midnight.

In other words, no alcohol just as RCPM is wrapping up their show, no alcohol at Banditos after the concert, and no alcohol at JJ's for the Mañanathon on Sunday!!!

Instead of having a dry CMXXIV, the Circus Mexicus Management Team and all of our partners in Rocky Point have decided to MOVE CIRCUS MEXICUS TO THE FOLLOWING WEEKEND, JUNE 11-14.

We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. We're hoping that it's still early enough that everyone can switch their plans to the following week without much heartache.

For those who have already made condo reservations, RPR is standing by and ready to help you switch your reservation.

Thanks everyone for your understanding.
See ya in Rocky Point for Circus Mexicus, June 11-15, 2015.

Hasta Pronto!
Circus Mexicus Management Team

Bringing Meat, Fruits, or Vegetables Across the Border for Thanksgiving is No Longer Permitted

Two years ago, the Mexican Federal Immigration people agreed to allow two frozen turkeys per vehicle brought into Mexico during the US Thanksgiving holiday period. Last year, it was never announced whether they would allow it or not but I didn't hear any reports of turkeys being "confiscated" at the border. The word is that this year no exceptions will be made regarding bringing your birds in.

That's really bad news all around because many locals receive gifts of turkeys during the holiday season and it can go a long ways towards feeding their families over the holidays. In truth, they very seldom check vehicles and check inside coolers even less, but to be in compliance, and not lose your bird(s), it's best to eat your turkey before you come down or buy it here locally (Sam's Club sells turkeys).

In the past, the only people doing inspections at the border were the Immigration folks but now they also have people from the Agriculture Department and they have cracked down on a lot of things that used to be permitted (or just ignored). Even pet food with meat in the ingredients is very often refused entry. In reality, it's not much different going the other way across the border. The US has strict guidelines as to what can and can not be brought into the country.

Black Moods to Play at BooBar November 7th

As part of the Rocky Point Rally this year, the Black Moods will be playing live at the Boobar Restaurant/Bar in Old Port on Friday, November 7th starting at 7:30 p.m. If you haven not yet seen them perform, this will be a great opportunity. The Boobar has a raised stage and great viewing from throughout the bar (not to mention great ocean views, exceptional food and drinks, and super friendly staff). Should be a great time.

While you are at the show (or any time soon at BooBar), please buy a raffle ticket or two. You can win an autographed banner of the Black Moods and, more importantly, help build a cafeteria. 100% of the proceeds from this raffle will be used to help build a cafeteria at Escuela (school) Nueva Creation in barrio San Rafael, Puerto Penasco, Mexico...

Annual Black and White Ball to be Held on November 29th at the Convention Center

It is sure to be a night to remember! On November 29th, the first lady of Puerto Penasco, Rafaela Felix de Figueroa and DIF, invite you to attend the 21st annual "Baile Blanco y Negro" (Black and White Ball). The event is sponsored by the convention center (Centro de Convenciones de Puerto Penasco) and Corona.

100% of ticket proceeds will go to DIF, this year earmarked for the continued progress on the new dialysis center. Ticket prices are $100 per couple, $50 for individual tickets, and $30 for student tickets. There are a limited number available and they do expect to sell out, so be sure to reserve yours soon! Hor d'oeuvres and beverages will be available for purchase during the gala, and the proceeds will also go to DIF.

This year's hostess princess, Andrea Luna Gutierrez will be among many beautiful young representatives from communities around the area. During the gala, one of these young ladies will be crowned the 2014 queen! This year's event will be special, because all of the princesses since 1978 are invited to return to celebrate special moments from years past.

This is a formal event (gentlemen are required to wear suits), and guests are encouraged to dress in accordance with the gala's black and white theme. They will be rolling out the red carpet (or will it be black?) for this event, so be sure to look your best.

Tickets are available at the Convention Center, the DIF office on Sinaloa or by contacting the OCV locally at 388 0444 or cell: 638 105 3384, or at info@cometorockypoint.com

Luxury Goods Sales and Millionaires on the Rise in Mexico

Sales of luxury goods are on the increase in Mexico, as is the number of millionaires. The luxury goods market - automobiles, watches, wine, champagne, designer clothing and other products - is expected to be worth US $14 billion by the end of this year, up 5.2% from 2013. And that growth rate is expected to jump to 15% over the next two years.

"The sector has maintained high growth rates for five years, and the growth has come despite the economic crisis with which we've been faced; this year won't be any different," said Abelardo Marcondes of the analyst firm Luxurylab.

By way of comparison, that market is of similar value to the total investment planned by the federal government in promoting tourism until 2018.

Euromonitor International analyst Beatriz Torres says the growth is primarily due to the entrance of new brands into the market, and the expansion of luxury goods shopping centers. Expensive brands such as Michael Kors, Tory Burch, Tag Heuer and Brooks Brothers have begun opening stores in shopping centers in Cancún, Puebla and Guadalajara.

As for millionaires, Mexico has the second highest number in Latin America with 164,000, while Brazil takes top spot with 191,700. A millionaire is counted as someone who has $1 million or more available to invest.

Last year the number of Mexican millionaires grew by 13%. Worldwide the figure was 14%.

Fernanda Hopenhaym, director of the Project for Organization, Development, Education and Investigation (Poder), says those millionaires hold 43% of the country's wealth, which "reflects the panorama of inequality that exists in Mexico."

A researcher at the National Autonomous University of Mexico says the gap between rich and poor is growing but, said David Lozano, not even an increase in the minimum wage, a recent subject of public debate, would have any effect on the economic model.

The Fun and Adventure of Driving in Mexico

Those Terrific Topes

If you have driven in Mexico for any length of time, this story is not for you. You will say it's just the "same-old". For those here on a short trip or those planning a drive into Mexico without past experience, here are a few things that may seem a bit strange to USA drivers.

The first thing you can not help but notice are the topes (lane-wide speed bumps). Sure, you will find these north of the border as well (though not as many as you will find in Mexico), but they can be anywhere. They may or may not be at the entrance to town, on an approach to or leaving an intersection or curve in the road, probably in front of a school or government building, and they certainly will be located almost anywhere that you see someone standing in the middle of the road selling something or asking for spare coins (you have to slow down = opportunity).

If there is a speed limit change or sign, keep your eyes on the pavement. They are NOT well marked (paint worn off long ago) and some of these topes can launch your vehicle unless you are driving at crawling speed. Many a catalytic converter has ended up on the road because of some tope encounter.

Until you get used to the town and the lay of the land, the best way to watch for topes (or potholes, etc.) is to keep an eye on the traffic ahead of you to see if everyone slows way down at the same place and/or watch for other telltale signs such as speed limit signs, schools, etc. If you're driving a vehicle that it very low to the ground, you may even have to approach some of them at an angle to avoid scaping the bottom of your car. But, take heart, before long, you know where they are and can even avoid most of them if you so desire by taking alternate routes.

So, about that left turn signal....

If, while driving in the US, you come up behind a vehicle with the left-hand turn signal on, it likely indicates to you that the driver wishes to turn left at the next intersection or change lanes - or that someone has forgotten to turn off their turn signal.

Here in Mexico, it's the same but different. In Mexico, if that left blinker is going, it becomes a bit of a logic puzzle.  You see, there are many more ways in which it may be interpreted and it's up to you to figure out which is correct.  You have to take into account such things as surrounding terrain, upcoming intersections, age of vehicle and driver, and license plate.  Using all the information, you MAY be able to make a semi-educated guess at what that driver intends to do.

While conventional wisdom would say that any coherent person would have his left-turn signal on because he's planning on turning left at some point within the foreseeable future, conventional wisdom doesn't prevail here.  Mexican wisdom prevails, and rightly so. In which case, you've got to consider all the factors stated above, plus the Mexican mindset.  Not an easy puzzle.

Here are some of the things that a blinking left-turn signal on a vehicle can mean:

(1) I am going to change lanes or turn left at the next street/entrance on the left (quite rare)
(2) It's okay to pass me now, no on-coming traffic (at least that I can see)
(3) I'm going very slow, it's just that only my left blinker works when i turn on my flashers
(4) I want to turn left but there's on-coming traffic so I'll be pulling over to the right shoulder/turnout to wait until it clears and then I'll make my left turn
(5) The vehicle(s) in front of me is (are) going REALLY slowly and I'm advising you to slow way down too, but only the left side of my blinkers work (see #3 above)
(6) I'm old and I forgot to turn off my left blinker miles ago

(7) I'm double-parked and this is the way I indicate that you should just go around me.

Any of those reasons can be combined with others.  Deciding what a left-turn signal means here in Mexico is a crap shoot (or, to put it more tastefully, a logic puzzle, as I said above).  It's just one of the many things that make driving here what might be referred to as "adventure driving".

Seat Belts and Riding in the Back of the Pickup:

Riding in the back of a pickup truck is something most of us lived through while growing up. For some reason, Mexicans riding in the back of a pickup seem to have the need to sit on the tailgate or edge of the box, and never in the bed. Tie this with topes and passing procedures and one really has to wonder how often this leads to disaster. It's rather interesting to pass a Cinturon Obligatorio (seat belts are mandatory) sign, while seeing a bunch of guys standing in the bed of the pickup, so the sign apparently means nothing to the Transito police. I guess that sign was meant for someone else.

Is Stopping at an ALTO Sign Optional?
While it may seem that this rule isn't followed by everyone, the short answer is, Yes. At least that would be my recommendation these days. I did a story a couple years ago in which I pointed out that I regularly ran 3 or 4 stop signs on my way into work every day. Since that time, they have dramatically increased the fines (around $700 Pesos) and started enforcing them much more aggressively. I do stop at them now (well, there still may be a few that don't count), and I encourage everyone to do the same. All that said, you will undoubtedly find that this rule doesn't seem to apply to taxi cab drivers and some other local vehicles. Drive defensively because you really don't know if someone is going to stop or not.
 Progress in Bi-National Desal Project

By Jose Antonio Perez - JoinUs Monthly Magazine

Agreements established with UNAM, CICESE, and other groups

With the support of agreements with the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), the Ensenada Center for Scientific Research and Higher Education (CICESE), and the University of California, among other organizations, progress is being made on a project to create a bi-national desalination plant, reports Project Coordinator Jorge David Ayala Soto.

Ayala Soto, who is both Project Coordinator and Director of the Technical Committee, stressed they are developing necessary steps to achieve National and International financing, carry out technical and economic feasibility studies, develop and executive project, and integrate the bases and specifications for the bidding process related to acquiring equipment.

In further representation of the Water for the World and Renewable Energy Foundation, Ayala Soto explained agreements are being reached with UNAM, CICESE, and the University of California, among other institutions, to help create the sea water desalination program, complemented with the creation of renewable energy, and an additional industrial agricultural project.

As part of this, he stated, a convention on Water, Energy, and Food was held in Puerto Penasco in October to reveal project details. They also seek to reach a collaborative agreement concerning water, for a period of at least 100 years, between Sonora and Arizona.

Ayala Soto explained the project will be 100% green, consisting of the production of 2000 liters per second of desalinated water, with a first stage of 500 liters per second and zero liquid discharge into the sea. He added this includes salt recovery, and solar energy support, within an initial 100 megawatt program.

He noted the work began in 2007, after the local City Council gave the go ahead to develop the bi-national desalination project. This, he added, in the long term will allow for the provision of water to this municipality and other in Sonora, as well as to the Southern part of Arizona. Through a feasibility study, the National Water Commission (CONAGUA) had determined the municipality of Puerto Penasco was the ideal spot for such a project.
10 Signs it's Your First Time in Mexico

1. You're pretty certain the drug lords are just waiting in the bushes to rob/rape/kidnap/kill you.

Get over yourself. They aren't. Yes, that sort of horrific violence still exists in very few, very particular parts of Mexico, none of which your tourist ass is probably going within hundreds of miles of. After visiting Mexico, you realize that it is an overall safe country to visit, filled with warm and friendly people who will go out of their way to make you feel welcome.

2. You think everyone is going to be sitting around eating tacos.

Tacos are a thing in Mexico, don't get me wrong. But so are about a zillion other mouth-watering dishes. Mexico is nothing if not full of diverse flavor, each distinct from one region to the next. Try mole poblano, sopes, chicharrón, elote, even toasted grasshoppers for those feeling adventurous. And the best food Mexico has to offer is never found in a restaurant listed in a guidebook. It's in private homes or sold by street vendors.

3. You think it couldn't possibly get any better than Cancun.

Seriously, you are so much more creative than this. Unless you're trying to relive your high school spring break or really have a thing for large, nondescript chain hotels, open your mind to an endless array of mind-blowingly cool possibilities that Mexico has to offer.

Go waterfall jumping in the surreally gorgeous San Luis Potosí. On a coffee tour in Chiapas. Board the Tequila Train in Guadalajara. Surf massive waves in Oaxaca. Explore Copper Canyon in Chihuahua - even larger and deeper than the Grand Canyon.

4. You only packed flip flops and a bathing suit.

News flash: Mexico is huge. Diverse. And not all tropical and beachy. There are mountains, deserts, canyons, and forests. Some places are at very high altitude (Pico de Orizaba tops out at 18,491 feet, and Mexico has 25 summits that reach almost 10,000 feet). Do your homework before you go and pack appropriately.

5. You assume everyone parties on Cinco de Mayo as much as people from the US do.

Most parts of Mexico don't even celebrate Cinco de Mayo. Traditionally, it's a local celebration in the city of Puebla, where in 1862 the Mexican army temporarily deterred French invaders. In the US many of us look for any excuse to drink Coronas and eat Mexican food and wear a sombrero...Mexicans don't. They get to rock that vibe all year long.

6. You think because it's in Pesos that everything will be cheap.

Mexico is not all inexpensive. While there are definitely deals to be had, in places all throughout the country luxury accommodations, high-end shopping, and gourmet restaurants can break the bank.

7. You expect everyone to speak English to you.

Get this: they speak Spanish. Or one of over 68 government recognized indigenous languages. Outside of big cities or well-run tourist establishments, good luck with the English.

8. You assume most all Mexicans are clamoring at the border desperately trying to get to the US.

Most Mexicans are very proud, and have a lot of love for, and loyalty to, their country. There is no other place in the world that they would want to be.

9. You drink the tap water.

Ever hear of Montezuma's Revenge? The water in Mexico is purified at the source, but the distribution system may allow the water to be contaminated en route to the tap. A lot of locals buy water in five gallon jugs called garrafones which are delivered to their homes (and recycled). Do as most of us do, and stick to purified water.

The water and ice in resorts, restaurants, and hotels should be fine to drink (it's not in their best interest to have a bunch of sick tourists on their hands), and any ice that you see in the form of a cylinder with a hole in the center is purchased from a purified ice factory and is safe. When brushing your teeth with tap water or when showering, just be careful not to swallow the water.

10. You think you can road trip Mexico in a week.

Mexico isn't Belize or El Salvador - it's roughly the same size as Spain, the United Kingdom, France, Italy, and Germany all put together, or three times the size of Texas. Mexico is vast and diverse - to see even a small portion of the country and feel like you actually experienced it takes time.

The Incredible Mexican Torta

For anyone who hasn't tried a torta, you are missing out on one of Mexico's most popular dishes. This traditional sandwich is made with a cut telera or bolillo roll that is packed with a variety of fillings and sometimes toasted to perfection on a flat-top grill. Like most Mexican street foods, tortas are inexpensive, fast and filling.

While a torta can be filled with any kind of savory sandwich filling, the beans, avocado and tomato are almost always present. Leave out the onion if you are not a fan, or substitute mayonnaise for the crema; some torterías use melted butter instead of crema.

The milanesa is probably the most popular filling, and part of its appeal is the crunch of the breadcrumbs, which are literally pressed into the meat with a rolling pin here in Mexico.

Pati, owner of Bassy Tortas, serves some of the best tortas in Rocky Point. Her little cafe is a bit off the beaten path and not marked very well but if you want to try a good torta, she makes some of the best.

To find her, you take the main Boulevard to Revoluction (towards the Cholla Mall) and go to the 2nd stop sign. Take a left at that stop and you will find it a couple doors down on the right. BTW, there is also a little bakery two doors down that has some of the best bread that I have found too. Both the torteria and the bakery are very popular with locals and, in Rocky Point that usually means a big thumbs up!

Fried Cutlet Torta: Torta de Milanesa

Ingredients
  • 1 4-ounce pork or chicken cutlet
  • ½ cup fine, dry bread crumbs (do not use panko, since the crumbs are too large to press into the meat)
  • beaten egg
  • vegetable oil for frying
  • 1 bolillo or telera roll, or substitute French bread
  • ¼ cup refried beans
  • 1 tablespoon thick Mexican crema or mayonnaise
  • 2-3 ¼ inch slices of tomato
  • 4-5 ¼ inch slices of avocado
  • 3-4 thin slices of white onion
  • 2-3 pickled jalapeño strips (jalapeños en escabeche)
Preparation:

Season the cutlet with salt and pepper. Place the crumbs on a plate and the beaten egg into a shallow pan. Dip the cutlet in the egg, then into the bread crumbs, pressing on both sides with a rolling pin so that as much as possible adheres to the cutlet.

Heat the oil in a pan and fry the cutlet on both sides until crisp. Set aside to drain on paper towels while you prepare the sandwich.

Cut the roll in half horizontally and pull out the soft center part (the miga). Spread one side with the refried beans and the other with the crema or mayonnaise.

Place the cutlet on the roll, top with tomato, avocado and onion.

For a hot sandwich, press in a panini press. Makes 1 sandwich.

Enjoy!
Another 8 Classic But Confusing Spanish Phrases to Ponder

1. caerle gordo a someone

Used to refer to someone who rubs you the wrong way. For example, that friend of yours who never returned the tools you lent them, and who's always gossiping about everyone else, el me cae gorda. You can use "caerme ..." to describe how you get along with someone in general - "me cae bien, me cae mal" - with the literal, direct translation being how well someone falls on you. In this particular version, my favorite, someone falls fat on you.

2. pintarse de colores

Get the hell out of there. As in, what my kids do when I try to convince them to go play something outside or when the bell rings at the end of the school day.

3. echarle ganas

Throw some life into it. "Echale ganas!" you might say to someone who looks like they'd rather be doing anything other than what they're doing at that moment.

4. tener ganas de

Crave, have a desire to, have the urge to. Applies to cravings big and small, culinary and otherwise. Such as: tengo ganas de viajar por Belice, tengo ganas de comer chilaquiles verdes, tengo ganas de arriesgarme.

5. creerse mucho

Brag, think too much of oneself. Se cree mucho is said with a derogative tone, as in, he thinks he knows Spanish fluently but really he's all arrogance.

6. echar huevo

The opposite of "echarle ganas." Instead of giving it your all, you give it an egg, the ultimate Mexican symbol of laziness. What someone may be doing on any given Sunday afternoon? Echando huevo.

7. comiendo moscas

Literally eating flies, figuratively dazing out. So when someone's staring off into space while you're explaining the basis of your thesis project you can call them out with, "Estás comiendo moscas!"

8. Irse el avion

Lose your train of thought. You're talking about one thing, and suddenly you say, "se me fue el avion:" my plane just took off.

Y ahora, me pinto de colores, damas y caballeros...
