Puerto Penasco Song by Rafael Lara Mungarro
Puerto Penasco Song by Rafael Lara Mungarro - with some great old photos

Welcome to February. Another month has flown by but, Wow, what perfect weather we have had. Light ocean breezes, temps in the mid 70s, and beautiful sunshine. We couldn't have asked for any better - and the sunsets have been spectacular too. I had family and friends in town on a couple occasions escaping the terrible weather that covered most of the USA - and they sure did not want to leave. One is contemplating moving here in the near future.

I actually found time to go out whale watching one afternoon and it was a great time. We saw hundreds of dolphins and a very happy humpback whale who loved to jump out of the water. There are a couple boats that go out almost daily right now and they get a good show on almost every trip. If you've never gone, it's definitely another one for your bucket list. Just get here within the next few weeks and you stand a very good chance at scratching that one off the list. If you need help finding a boat to take you out, just let me know. I'd be happy to point you in the right direction.

They are working around the clock on the Home Port at this time and it is coming together fast. I was fortunate enough to attend the ceremony on Tuesday with the Governor of Sonora and a host of other people in attendance. You've seen the photos and our ongoing series part I is below, but to see it live and in person is even more impressive. And, seeing the concept photos right on site made it all come together and it became real instead of that year's long dream that it had been. It is really happening and I, for one, am very excited about it.

Work continues on expanding the main Boulevard Benito Juarez and you can expect continued detours around the construction as you come into town. Samuel Ocana is now fully under construction as well and it is not the best route to take at this time. When it is finished, it will be the preferred route to Sandy Beach but for now, you will need to either endure the detours or, if you want to avoid town all together, you can take the road before town towards Laguna Shores. Just turn Right at the roundabout before you get to town. Then take a left just past the railroad tracks and it will lead you straight out to Sandy Beach. Let me know if you need better directions and I'll try to explain it more clearly.

Even though this is traditionally the slowest time of year for us, we have closed 4 sales and have one more pending sale as of now. Looks like we're off and running. Remember to contact us at any time if you're thinking of Buying or Selling at the Sonoran Resorts. As an FYI, Rick Busa received an opportunity that he couldn't turn down and will be leaving the team. We have taken on a new member, Mike Forshaw. He is a great guy and will fit in very well. Please help me to welcome him to our family. I'll try to do a short bio on him for next month's newsletter. And, always remember that we are the only official and exclusive representatives for our beautiful resorts. We're always here for whatever you need.

The Scottsdale Barrett-Jackson Show was a huge success and the weather and attendance could not have been better. Thanks to those of you who stopped by our booth. Sheri manned our booth almost single-handedly this year and she did a great job. Lots of positive comments about Rocky Point and our future were heard and we already have several people set up to visit the Sonorans.

As always, I'm here full time and I am more than happy to help you with whatever you need, whether Sonoran Resorts related or not. Just give me a call or send me an email any time and I will do my very best to help you. If I can't help you myself, I'm sure that I can point you in the right direction.

PART I in our Ongoing Series: Economic Impact of Puerto Peasco Home Port plus a Visit by Sonora Governor Guillermo Padrs

Progress on our Home Port as of January 31, 2104. Photo by Gustavo Brown

Our long awaited cruise port construction is underway, which means the Proverbial Clock has started ticking on the time line for completing infrastructure required to handle the economic impact of what will amount to a burst, although a continuous one, a predictable one, of tourism from this uniquely distinct cruise segment.

To fully understand the special preparation needed to service this extraordinary market, which makes up over half of all tourism segments in the world, we must first understand the cruise industry that will bring this segment together in our destination especially because we are the home port. As a home port, we have the opportunity to impress and service the same group of tourists twice during their visit, with the possibility of serving them again during a land vacation later on.

This article is the first in a series forthcoming in monthly slices designed to increase your understanding of not only the cruise industry but other aspects in the mindset of cruisers and how they got here.

All data analyzed in preparation for these articles were researched and culled from reviewing studies, surveys, facts and figures as well as other forms of published material from more than 40 different web sites deemed to be the most reliable and up-to-date industry sources.

In the course of these articles there should be new and relevant information for even the most experienced cruisers among the residents, regular visitors and property owners of Rocky Point; indeed maybe provide a spark of enlightenment as to how you, if so inclined, might become involved in one or more of the incredible business and service opportunities that will present themselves with our fresh world status as not just a new homeport but one that offers the cruising world an itinerary of truly all new ports of call in one of the most diverse seas on our planet.

In addition, you will learn how and why our success as a home port is fairly guaranteed from the very first cruise departure. You will also learn when it's time to 'fasten your seat belts' for the wild ride upward in the future of our little [soon to be not so little] slice of paradise by the sea. Depending on the extent of your desire to become involved in the history of our destination, the time to fasten your seat belt just might be right now!

To illustrate the direct and indirect economic impact of cruise tourism on the residents, businesses and municipality in a home port destination, let us begin with a statistical picture of the cruise industry worldwide, continent wide and state wide, thus giving us a better understanding of where Puerto Peasco will fit into this complex segment of tourism that is poised to fulfill our destiny as a world class destination resort.

The cruise line industry has grown continually since its officially recognized inception that began with a three month cruise around the Mediterranean in 1891 carrying 241passengers. The industry continued to constantly grow and contribute to world economies until 1970, the year the industry carried 500,000 cruisers and reached the so difficult to determine "Critical Mass", that point when growth surges exponentially with a life of its own, and the cruise industry has never looked back since.

In fact, since 1970 the cruise passenger market has grown a phenomenal 2,100 percent, from the 500,000 passengers in 1970 to an estimated 21.3 million in 2013.  The flood of exponential growth stabilized in the '80's and '90's to a more manageable consistency; even through the world economic downturn of the last several years, growth has continued averaging 7.4% annually...

Another statistic that bodes well for the future of cruise tourism for Puerto Peasco is that of those 21.3 million cruisers, 55 to 60% were from the U.S. This remarkable statistic is even more extraordinary when you consider that of the 2,000 ports of embarkation around the world, only 30 are located in the U.S.  In other words, Americans continue to drive worldwide tourism growth, and will continue to do so as long as the cruise lines keep introducing new cruise ships to the market. And we can count on new ships arriving for service as long as occupancy continues to average 104% like it has for the last decade.

So far the cruise lines have kept up with demand by investing billions of dollars in new ships annually, having delivered 167 new ships from 2000 through February 2013. These include sizes varying in capacity from riverboats that carry just 32 passengers up to the mega-vessels that carry 5,400 passengers and serve as a floating destination with hundreds of unbelievable amenities at a cost of more than a billion dollars each!(worthy of detailing in future stories). On order for delivery between 2014 and 2016 are 22 more ships representing investments of more than $14 billion.

We'll close Part I of this series with a few more facts that may surprise you, even excite many who have a business interest in mind for the anticipated tourism influx:

  • Revenue for the US economy in 2012 was $37.85 billion.
  • Cruise industry is responsible for 314,000.U.S. jobs
  • Avg annual growth rate of the cruise industry since 1980 is 7.4%
  • Average age of cruise passengers is 50+ (or 46 depending on source)
  • Average household earnings of cruisers is $109,000 ($93,000 depending on source)
  • Another amazing fact is that only 19.9% (or 24% depending on source) of Americans have taken a cruise. (Adds a reason for cruise lines to spend a billion dollars on one ship.)
  • 80% of cruise passengers think it's a great way to sample destinations.(Excellent reason to have our "ducks in a row" from the very first cruise.)
  • Average length of a cruise is 7.2 days
  • Average length of land stay at home port destinations prior to cruise departure is 1.5 days (Expenditure per pax averages $155.62.-does not include expenditures after returning from cruise)
  • Average size of cruising party is 2.1 passengers.
  • The states producing the most cruise passengers are Florida, California, Texas, Massachusetts, New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Illinois, Arizona and Georgia. (Having three states in the top ten markets within driving distance to our home port is a cruise line's dream!)

Part II of our Home Port economic impact study will further detail statistics as they relate to the direct and indirect economic benefits we can expect from the cruise lines and passengers; including results of exclusive interviews with behind-the-scenes leaders who know the facts about how the development is to roll out. We will also provide the statistics on how and where the dollars spent by tourists and cruise lines are circulated. (Hint: Each tourism dollar spent circulates through the local economy 7 to 15 times.)

Visit by our Governor:

Following is an update on the visit and inspection of the Home Port progress by Governor Guillermo Padrs on Wednesday January 29th 2014 showing the progress just since this story was posted earlier this month.

Governor Padrs spoke to a crowd of 300-400 interested and involved citizens, municipal officials and dozens of press representatives. Frankly, the excitement was hard to suppress as officials representing the President of Mexico gave highly charged expressions of support and commitment by the country's leader.

Some of the salient points included:

  • Review of the continued financial commitment by the state and federal governments. 190 million pesos were invested last year; and 300 million pesos will be invested this year.
  • The port dock is being built to accommodate three cruise ships to be prepared for the anticipated growth. It will take over 600,000 cubic meters to extend the dock out one kilometer from the shore.
  • Governor animatedly referred to the Home Port as the seed that will detonate phenomenal growth in this region that will spread through the state and the country. It will make Rocky Point a privileged place with plenty of jobs and a positive future. The crowd responded very favorably to those words.
  • Governor also emphasized that "The best is yet to come", and "We proved that dreams do come true" as he referred to the economic downfall of 2006-2009 and how the community and the state chose to walk fearlessly in support of the Home Port moved boldly forward in spite of drastic economic conditions.
  • Now that it is all coming together, the governor thanked the citizens of Puerto Peasco for working together in support of this monumental project that will create steady and stable tourism visitorship that will benefit each and every person in the municipality and the region.
Exiting times are coming for Puerto Penasco and the Sonoran Resorts!!!

Sonoran Resorts Launch a Concierge, Wedding and Event Planning Department to Better Serve Owners and Clients

Who hasn't dreamt of a wedding or anniversary on the beach at sunset; or a romantic dinner at water's edge with champagne as the sun fades beyond the Baja Peninsula leaving a vermilion sky that you will forever remember. Romance lives on the beaches of Puerto Peasco and beckons the soft embrace of lovers from around the world.

In a classic move to continue their high level of service to owners, guests and visitors, Sonoran Resorts have recruited a wedding and event planning expert who occupies the Concierge office in the Sonoran Sky Luxury  Resort Condominium on Sandy Beach here in Puerto Peasco.

Olimpia Garcia Watson, the newest member of the Sonoran's team, gained her expertise in wedding and event planning in Puerto Vallarta where she sold, planned and serviced up to 250 weddings and events per year for the Riu Hotels, after two years in sales at the Grand Velas Resort specializing in niche group markets such as foreign individual tourism bookings, special event groups and.FAM trips.

Olimpia actually began her career in the hospitality industry in 2006 right here in Puerto Peasco at the Sonoran Resorts. She moved to San Carlos to complete her studies at the Technological Institute of Sonora where she earned her Degree in Tourism Administration.  On her return to our little slice of paradise by the sea, she was again snapped up by Sonoran Resorts Corporate to open one of the few on-site wedding and special events planning departments in Puerto Peasco.

In less than a month in her new position at the Sonoran Sky, Olimpia is negotiating for two weddings and one Quinceniela (a traditional 15th birthday celebration similar to a debutant celebration in the U.S.). She has also established working relationships with local vendors and service and equipment providers who have met her exacting quality standards.

The secret to creating a successful wedding or other memorable event, according to Olympia's proven philosophy, is listening to the client and not be afraid to offer suggestions to make their event even more memorable. The next step toward insuring a successful event is providing the highest level of service. With a smile of acknowledgement, Olimpia adds, "To do that it helps greatly to be 'addicted to the service industry.'" It doesn't take long after meeting her to realize that Olympia is an "addict."

If you have ever coordinated a wedding or any size special event (from family reunions to social club rendezvous) then you know the value of an experienced planner. You can double that value when your event is in another country. With Olimpia on your side, your biggest burden will be telling her how many people are coming, and what it's about. Usually after just one meeting or even a phone call, he will do all the groundwork to give you the best options and budget for your event.

Imagine being able to actually enjoy your event; spend quality time with your friends and associates, relaxing with a chance to absorb the peaceful beauty of this heavenly destination while every detail is handled by an expert who lives here and has done this hundreds of times.

Worth noting is that Sonoran Sky has the luxuriously appointed high-tech Los Volcanes ballroom and meeting facility on the 2nd floor. It is capable of providing just about everything you'll need for any corporate or private event.

As far as wedding planning, there is no limit to what Olimpia can create for a lifetime of memories, whether it is a symbolic wedding, a candle or sand ceremony, or a legal ceremony, she can create it just for you.

By the way, did you know you can refer your family and friends to hold weddings and events at the Sonoran Sky? There is no better place to have a wedding than in the golden sands of Puerto Peasco beneath an auburn sunset.

The beach beckons....

Valentine's Day in Mexico

February 14th is celebrated in Mexico as the Da de San Valentin, but it's more commonly referred to as El Da del Amor y la Amistad, the "day of love and friendship." People commonly give flowers, candies and balloons to their romantic partners, but it's also a day to show appreciation for friends.

Everyone can take part in Mexican Valentine's Day celebrations, because it's not just for lovers, it's also for friends. It's a time for people to show appreciation to the people they care about - this way, there's no reason to feel left out if you don't have a significant other. Buy some flowers, write a poem or make a gift for one of your friends - let them know you care!

If you think Spanish is a romantic language, you're right! If you'd like to tell your special someone how you feel about them in Spanish, you may find it a bit more challenging than just learning the words. Saying I love you in Spanish can be a bit more complicated than in English because there are several different ways to say it. The most common are "Te quiero" which is said freely among friends and family members but "Te amo" is used to denote a stronger feeling.

This holiday is generally considered to have European roots and there are various versions as to its origin and there are a few theories on the subject.

One of them says that in the Nordic countries of Finland, Norway, Denmark and Ireland, February is the month when little birds "match" and mate. Another says that it's a Roman feast that became Christian. This festival was dedicated to Cupid, the god of Love, to whom offerings were made to ask for the ideal love.

Probably the most widespread and romantic version says that in third century Rome, when Catholics were persecuted and soldiers were forbidden to marry because it was believed that single men performed better in battle, a priest named Valentine was inspired to marry couples in secret.

Emperor Claudius II found out about this priest, and although at first he was drawn to the Catholic faith, he eventually sentenced Valentine to death. As the time to die approached, the priest gave classes to Julia, his jailer's daughter. He also fell in love with her. On the day of his execution, he wrote her a message and signed, 'From your Valentine'. Hence, many postcards printed for the date carry this dedication.

Very likely not the origin but truly Mexican nonetheless, I will put forth another possibility: There was an ancient civilization that inhabited Mexican soil who had a divinity that personified Love. Well, actually, there were two: Xochipilli and Xochiquetzal.

Xochipilli was like the Apollo of the Mexica. Also known as Macuilxochitl, he was the god of Love, games, beauty, dance, flowers, and songs (pretty diverse deity it seems). His name meant 'prince of the flowers' and he had a wife (some historians say twin sister), Xochiquetzal, which means precious flower or ornate bird. She was associated with the fertility of nature. Centeotl, the god of corn, was their son.

In honor of this pair of gods, four days of fasting was observed. They sacrificed by inserting maguey thorns into their tongues and made offerings of bread and corn. They also danced to the beat of drums called teponaztli.

OK, I'll admit that this last version doesn't sound nearly as romantic, what with all the fasting, thorns in their tongues, drum beating etc, but it does bring it all back around to Mexico. What can I say, I do try...

If You Weren't At the RCPM January Jam, You Missed a "Don't Miss" Event

DSC03491

When Roger Clyne and the Peacemakers come to Rocky Point in January, they come to jam! That's what we've come to expect  and that's exactly what they deliver-and then some! This year's January Jam of  two nights held over the weekend of January 24th and 25th was a bit beyond exceptional up to and including the weather. The Jam began with the Friday night show at The Hut (formerly Chango's) just outside the entrances to the Sonoran Sea and Sonoran Spa beach front condominium resorts and of course Saturday at JJ's Cantina in Cholla Bay where they started the original January Jam seven years ago to introduce some new songs they'd been working on for a new album.

Since that first Jam in January of 2008, it has grown into a tradition as strong as any we have here in our little slice of paradise by the sea.  It gets better every year because this gang of dedicated musicians always seem to have something new for us.  This year was no exception. In our preview blog we labeled this January Jam as one of those "Don't Miss" events and RCPM proved us spot on as they brought a lineup that included their regular opener, Jason Boots who started warming the eager crowd that began showing up to The Hut at happy hour. Shawn Johnson, the creative singer, songwriter and guitarist who plays regularly at The Hut every Thursday through Sunday, began the show on the outside stage at 8:00 o'clock before the "as advertised"

Jim  Dalton and the Lawbreakers took the stage for the first time playing together as a separate band, even though the Lawbreakers include RCPM drummer, PH Naffah, bassist Nick Scropos, plus Jim brought Harley Husbands from another Circus Mexicus opener, Shurman. The result of this first ever stage performance by these gifted musicians playing some of Jim's newly recorded pure country songs, was absolutely stunning. Jim  unveiled a voice as deep as the vermilion sea and as country as the Sonoran desert. What a pleasant surprise!

While we expected Jim to come out donning his signature C'boy hat, he proved to be too much of a Denver Bronco's fan the week before Superbowl, and appeared in a bright flowing orange and blue Broncos poncho, looking cool and sounding even cooler.

The Jim Dalton and the Lawbreakers set ended  all too soon, but was followed by the main event, Roger Clyne and, well, basically the same group, now Peacemakers. See, when you're as good as these guys you can do that sort transition.  And that's when the Jam started.  They promised a set of cover songs which they rarely play in concert so we didn't really know what to expect except that it would be good. And it was, indeed better than good as they jammed to everything from hard rock to rap to classic country and rock. In typical RCPM spirit, they continued well after the "one set" promised as the record crowd for a Friday night (nearly 500 fans) kept calling them back on stage and since they are always having as good a time as everyone else, they kept coming back for more!

All good things had to come to an end because there was a sold out Mexican Moonshine Classic Golf Tournament to tee off on Saturday morning that raised a bunch of bucks for several local charities in Rocky Point.

The traditional Saturday night Jam at JJ's Cantina opened with Jason Boooooooots (as Roger likes to call him), bringing down the sun with his special musical style, which, by the way, he showed just how versatile he is on Friday night during the cover set.

RCPM hit the stage rockin' and rollin' interspersed with hearty, heartfelt and honest gratitude to the crowd of about a 1,000 hard core fans who came out ready to fend off whatever weather would come to historic JJ's Cantina in Cholla Bay-which, by the way, allowed for a  beautiful January evening perfect for the energy brought by Roger Clyne and the Peacemakers who, as we've come to expect, left it all on stage, all for their fans.

Peace be with the Peacemakers. We wait with anxious patience for their monster show in June that you may have heard about. It's called Circus Mexicus. June will be your second chance for a "Don't miss" event. Join the thousands of fans who converge upon our golden beaches so Roger Clyne and the Peacemakers can rock their world. Don't miss this one! Stay informed at www.circusmexicus.net.

Honest to Goodness "Goodness" Going On In Rocky Point!

DSC_0001

2013 transposed to 2014 with so many good things going on in our little slice of paradise by the sea that a couple more stories are in  order to bring summary substance to the diversity of good people who perpetuate fulfillment of the many needs of Rocky Point's poor.

Our first story is about the group of 70 or so LDS faithful from Mesa, Arizona's Ray 2nd Ward Mormon Church who love Mexico, Puerto Peasco and its people in  particular. Though most had been enjoying the tranquil ambiance and mesmerizing natural beauty of the beach, the sea and surrounding desert for years, it was six years ago when they figured out ways they could help the locals they'd  come to appreciate so much.

Spearheading the mission since its inception are Nelson and Lori Richardson who were Rocky Point regulars long before deciding to organize a group that would accomplish charitable objectives as well as enjoy a fun Christmas holiday vacation. Nelson has always believed in mixing fun into most of his family and work related activities, so this fit right in with his philosophy.

They've always stayed at the Sonoran Spa or Sonoran Sea so they could organize fun group activities on the beach and jump the dunes on their quads near the two resorts. It's obvious, however, that the most enjoyment of this group is doing  good things for the needy people of Rocky Point. "It's what Christmas is all about," commented one veteran member of the group.

Beginning with a couple dozen good-hearted folks, the annual treks have grown exponentially every year with well over 70 in attendance for Christmas 2013. Over the years their objectives have expanded as well. In association with the two local LDS church branches, each year they select 10 - 12 families to whom they provide holiday packages that include a healthy assortment of food, household supplies, clothing and toys. For the last several years they've held a huge "Street BBQ" in a selected barrio, which this last year was in San Rafael. They served over 300 hot dogs to the grateful residents.

In a separate effort, the church youth participate in a "Value Project" each year where the younger ones assembled 50 bags of toys and distributed them throughout the barrios. The 2013 "Value Project" was lead by the Richardson's 12 year old daughter, Paige.

The selfless contributions of these Americans and Rocky Point aficionados cannot be over-emphasized, even though their reward is the personal satisfaction of knowing that a family, a neighborhood, a group of children had a better Christmas because of their efforts!

February 2nd Dia de la Candelaria Marks the End of the Mexican Holiday Season and Heralds the Arrival of Spring

In a country that loves its celebrations, the observance of Candlemas, February 2, is the official closure to the Mexican holiday season.  After the family gathering, it's time to take down all the Christmas dcor and welcome the spring season. It is also 'payback day' for those who found a figure in their portion of the Day of Kings cake (January 6): this person is obligated to host a party of atole and tamales for all their family and friends. The Mexican celebration of Da de la Candelaria is an acknowledgement of both the European and prehispanic traditions, as tamales were used as offerings to the god of water, Tlloc, to ensure abundant rains for a plentiful harvest.

Religious Roots:   February 2nd falls forty days after Christmas, on which date Catholics observe as the "Feast of the Purification of the Blessed Virgin" or as the "Presentation of the Lord." According to Jewish law a woman was required to wait for 40 days after giving birth so it was customary to bring a baby to the temple after that period of time had passed. It is believed that the infant Jesus would have been taken to the temple on February second. On this day, believers honor "the rising of the Baby Jesus," which consists of people carrying images and figures of baby Jesus to be blessed at the church.

Another important custom in Mexico, particularly in areas where traditions run strong, is for families to own an image of the Christ child, a nio Dios. At times a godparent is chosen for the nio Dios, who is then responsible for hosting various celebrations between Christmas and Candlemas. First, on Christmas Eve the nio Dios is placed in the Nativity scene; on January 6th, King's Day, the Christ child is brought presents from the Magi; and on February 2nd, the icon is dressed in fine clothes and presented in the church.

Other cultures around the world also take note of February 2nd as it marks the point between the winter solstice and spring equinox. This date is regarded as a superstitious day in various cultures. In many places it is traditionally a time to prepare the earth for spring planting.  In the United States February 2 is observed as groundhog day- with the groundhog's shadow predicting the arrival of spring. If the groundhog sees his shadow, it is said that there is still a long winter ahead. One needs to remember that these traditional parties originated before North America had the Super Bowl as a reason to party with friends during the worst of winter. In Mexico, the mid-winter party is "Da de la Candelaria" (Day of the Candles), a celebration based on religious influences, pagan traditions and weather superstitions that celebrates spring's arrival.

Brother's Pizza Now Under New Management-By Carlos and Michelle Hopkins of CS Supply!

We've written about Brother's Pizza, and CS Supply. Now we get to write about both of them together as Carlos and Michelle Hopkins of CS Supply have taken over the management of Brother's Pizza. They were the perfect couple to take on this endeavor since they sold most of the equipment to build the kitchen and bar in the beginning. So, it was only natural that when Bob Rabicoff found out he had to relocate to a different climate for health reasons, he and wife, Penny approached Carlos and Michelle about becoming partners to manage their beloved restaurant. The result is a partnership "made in heaven" so to speak. Bob and Penny can be assured of continued quality management and Carlos and Michelle are excited to take on a new venture within their realm of expertise.

Michelle says that while they will not be taking any items from the original menu, she is looking forward to making several additions to it, taking advantage of the 10 years she lived in Italy.  One of those additions is homemade Lasagna using a recipe she brought back from Italy.

By the way, for you Brother's regulars, Original Chef, Luis Valdez remains to insure the quality fare you've become used to.

Other yummy new items you will find on the expanded menu are two additional salads: Chef Salad, and one with grilled chicken, cranberries, almonds, apples and feta cheese called the Barbara Salad. New also are homemade soups: Tomato, French Onion and Clam Chowder. They have also added Mozzarella Sticks to the Appetizers.

As if the above additions aren't impressive enough, we've saved some thrillers until last:

  • You can now choose thin crust pizza if you wish.

You can also choose between four different Hamburgers including

  • a 100% pure Angus Beef Burger;
  • a grilled chicken Buffalo Burger with buffalo sauce and other goodies;
  •  a Turkey Burger creatively adorned;
  • And for the trend setters, a vegetarian Porto Bello Burger smothered in an assortment of roasted and fresh veggies.
  • For the kids: their own menu, including-Fun, Fun, Fun!-Make Your Own Pizza! Guaranteed they'll have more fun than playing in the mud!
  • Finally, a dessert menu that you'll just have to discover for yourselves!

Among upcoming improvements, Carlos and Michelle have plans to decorate and open the patio for service on nice days.

They still have delivery service to anywhere in Puerto Peasco. Just call 638-383-3712 to order.

Brother's is open 12 noon until 10:00pm and closed on Wednesdays. If you have any questions, you can call the above number, or you can email the restaurant at [email protected].

These are all great reasons to stop by Brother's Pizza, even if you don't know Carlos or Michele who always look forward to meeting new folks and saying "Hola" to their many friends here. Oh, and bring the kids!

Families Helping Families and LifeVantage Legacy Partner to Build Even More New Homes for Rocky Point Families

DSC_0045

As promised in our story last month, we're compelled to write about the good that blessed our little slice of paradise by the sea in closing out 2013.

We've written about the miraculous contributions by the non-profit organization known as Families Helping Families (FHF) that builds homes around town for qualifying needy families. We've also told you about how they have brought in other non-profit groups like the Rotary youth clubs who have come down during the summer and built homes under the tutelage of the FHF construction leadership, namely Jared Parker, a respected contractor in Salt Lake City and Ralph Pew, a successful valley real estate attorney, who, along with their wives, Marsha and Janene respectively, assumed responsibility for FHF when original founder, Grant Walker, relocated and could no longer make the treks to Rocky Point.

What makes this project even more admirable is that no one takes one penny for their efforts or expenses. For example, when the Rotary youth come down to build houses; they have all raised about $1,000 each to pay all their own expenses for their trip, plus the cost of materials to build the homes.   Between Ralph and Jared, they make many trips down each year to purchase lots, hire and organize the labor locally to pour foundations and install plumbing and wiring before the families arrive to build. After the home is built, they again hire locals to finish the drywall, stucco and install all the fixtures and appliances. These duties require thousands of miles a year in travel mileage and time alone, all at their own expense. Let's not even count the days away from their primary career responsibilities that it takes to serve their fellow man.

Wanting to continue their ability to build more and more homes for deserving families in Rocky Point, FHF actively seeks further affiliations with other charity-minded organizations. In pursuing this effort, they were introduced to their newest partners, publicly traded LifeVantage Corporation (NASDAQ:LFVN). LifeVantage, a leader in Nrf2 science and the maker of Protandim, the Nrf2 Synergizer patented dietary supplement, TrueScience Anti-Aging Cream and LifeVantage Canine Health, is a science-based network marketing company. LifeVantage is dedicated to visionary science that looks to transform wellness and anti-aging internally and externally with products that dramatically reduce  oxidative stress at the cellular level. The Company was founded in 2003 and is headquartered in Salt Lake City, Utah. The company operates in the U.S. and five other countries around the world with 67,000 distributors.

Through their large non-profit charity arm, LifeVantage Legacy, http://www.lifevantage.com/company/lifevantage-legacy/ the company is able to pursue their philosophy of giving back and making a difference in the world, raising and contributing funds, volunteers, expertise and products by partnering  with organizations around the world that serve and support children, families and communities. In the FHF program, they saw as a perfect fit for that philosophy.

The success of this partnership is evidenced by the fact that in their first year (2013) LifeVantage raised enough funds through their generous distributors to build five homes during two trips of approximately 150 volunteers each, all of whom, remember, paid all their own expenses. They donated one home early this January and will return in March to donate the other completely finished and furnished homes to families suggested by FHF's local organization, Casas Perpetuales.

As we've mentioned before, recognition is the last thing on the minds of individuals and organizations so committed to making a difference in the lives and communities where help is needed. Rocky Point is very fortunate to have so many generous individuals and organizations. Even though recognition is not sought, charity of such impact deserves acknowledgement; and we feel compelled to let you know about it.

Ing. Mauro Tejeda Cervantes of Servicio Automotriz Baja Will Earn Your Loyalty

DSC02316

Loyalty is a virtue that you can give freely to those who earn it.  You know how when you find a service provider, whatever the  service, who solves your issue with professionalism and courtesy, you return to that provider, because he earned your loyalty? Well, that's what'll happen if you ever take your car to Mauro's Baja Automotive Service for repair. (Not affiliated with Baja 1000 on Fremont.)

Mauro's personality will be the first thing that gets your attention, followed by the way he makes you feel real comfortable about bringing your automobile to him.  That's because of his friendly confidence as he listens to your description of what's going on with the vehicle-that is unless he already knows from a sound  of some kind-and how rapidly he grabs the right tools or equipment to confirm what's exactly the issue.

Mauro has a degree in Mechanical Engineering from the Universidad Autnoma de Baja, California (UABC) with specialization in Automotive Fuel Injection Systems in all major American and foreign vehicles. Upon graduating in 1994, he was hired by Valley Automotive in Mexicali. After completing their training program covering the complete line of Ford engines from autos to big rigs he was transferred to Robinson Ford in El Centro, California. He continued to broaden his expertise in the major brands like GMC products, construction equipment like Caterpillar and most foreign products like Jaguar, BMW, Mercedes and more. His dream always was to open his own full auto service specializing in fuel injection systems.

Mauro had met his future wife, Maria Dolores Robles, a native of Puerto Peasco while at UABC. She was majoring in Public Accounting.  They married in 1995 upon her graduation and she had no trouble convincing him to relocate to Puerto Peasco in 1997.

Peasco would be the perfect place to fulfill his dream and he was planning that when Matco Caterpillar offered him a management position with their enterprise in Ensenada, an offer he says, he couldn't refuse. It was an opportunity to further broaden his knowledge and expertise in his specialty.

After three years of weathering the grueling commute to Ensenada, which even included a six month stint to San Diego, in 2000 Mauro decided to finally settled back into life with his family in Puerto Peasco and began the final plans to open his own business, which he was able to do in 2002.

During that planning period he also taught classes in civil engineering at the Technical Institute of Puerto Peasco while diligently studying and earning certification in his specialty for other brands. To date, he has ten certifications, which he updates every year, as an authorized service for Chevrolet, Ford, Chrysler, Volkswagen, Audi, BMW, Land Rover, Mercedes Benz, Toyota and Nissan. In addition, he's an authorized service provider for the electronic diesel injection systems in heavy equipment including Matco, Caterpillar, Detroit and Cummins.

Monumento al Pescado meant to herald Puerto Peasco's roots

Calle13-Monumento-al-Pescador
By Azucena Mazn

Rescuing part of Puerto Peasco's roots, while presenting both residents and visitors with reminders of the city's origins, is the goal behind building a "Fish Monument" at the intersection of Calle 13 and Blvd. Benito Jurez.

The figure, which will be placed on the structure currently under construction as part of work to improve and beautify this important road leading to the city's main hotel zones, will be that of a marlin measuring 6 meters long (nearly 20 feet). The fiberglass marlin is being built by the local company PROFIBRA.

"This is a project both for the people of Puerto Peasco and for our visitors," explains Mayor Gerardo Figueroa Zazueta. "We were lacking a monument to reflect our roots, so that people may know about the origins of the port. In addition, the investment in this [monument] is not as much as some have said."

The Monumento al Pescado, according to information provided by the Office of Public Projects, is set to be inaugurated within the next three weeks. This will also mark the reopening of Calle 13.

The marlin is to be placed in the center of the concrete block structure currently underway at the entrance to Calle 13. The structure itself will be covered with rock and pine cantera; ironwork, landscaping and lighting are also part of the project that has been estimated to run about 500,000 pesos.

With completion of this monument, this will bring the number of monuments heralding the roots of Puerto Peasco to four, joining the Estatua del Pescador and monument to Jos the Fisherman in the malecn, and the Shrimp Monument located at Plaza del Camarn.

From Sailfish to Marlin

During the 50s, a first emblematic monument of Puerto Peasco was built in the form of a sailfish.

In learning about the new Monumento al Pescado construction, many Puerto Peasco natives and long-time residents remember the sailfish that once stood at the entrance to what is now Calle 13, which was actually a promotional sign for the Playa Hermosa Hotel.

So recalls Enrique Rodriguez, General Manager of FMI Rentals and lifelong Puerto Peasco resident (who for a time while growing up lived just blocks from the sailfish sign).

"It was a Puerto Peasco icon because at the time Playa Hermosa was one of the best hotels on the beach. Everyone who visited at that time would say, 'go along the street, turn right at the fish and the hotel is at the end,' it was like a reference point," Rodriguez explained during a recent impromptu interview.

Rodriguez, along with Las Gaviotas manager Alberto Gallardo and shipbuilder Antonio Bellot, detailed the sailfish monument was well-built and consisted of a stone base with wooden posts, and a wooden sailfish pointing in the direction of the hotel.

"I think it was a good reference point, as well as an icon for Puerto Peasco," reiterated Rodrguez, "and it is worth rescuing these values; we can agree on that."

Similarly, Gallardo remembered the sailfish figure built over 50 years ago was quite famous at the time though disappeared when Calle 13 was first paved in the late 70s.

"The monument was there up until they paved Calle 13 in '78 or '79," he explained, "The owner of Playa Hermosa used to receive many people who he would take out fishing for sailfish, of which there were many at the time. That "little" fish was quite famous."

North America to Drown in Oil as Mexico Ends Monopoly

The flood of North American crude oil is set to become a deluge as Mexico dismantles a 75-year-old barrier to foreign investment in its oil fields.

Plagued by almost a decade of slumping output that has degraded Mexico's take from a $100-a-barrel oil market, President Enrique Pena Nieto is seeking an end to the state monopoly over one of the biggest crude resources in the Western Hemisphere. The doubling in Mexican oil output that Citigroup Inc. said may result from inviting international explorers to drill would be equivalent to adding another Nigeria to world supply, or about 2.5 million barrels a day.

That boom would augment a supply surge from U.S. and Canadian wells that Exxon Mobil Corp. (XOM) predicts will vault North American production ahead of every OPEC member except Saudi Arabia within two years. With U.S. refineries already choking on more oil than they can process, producers from Exxon to ConocoPhillips are clamoring for repeal of the export restrictions that have outlawed most overseas sales of American crude for four decades.

"This is going to be a huge opportunity for any kind of player" in the energy sector, said Pablo Medina, a Latin American upstream analyst at Wood Mackenzie Ltd. in Houston. "All the companies are going to have to turn their heads and start analyzing Mexico."

Unprecedented Output

An influx of Mexican oil would contribute to a glut that is expected to lower the price of Brent crude, the benchmark for more than half the world's crude that has averaged $108.62 a barrel this year, to as low as $88 a barrel in 2017, based on estimates from analysts in a Bloomberg survey. Five of the seven analysts who provided 2017 forecasts said prices would be lower than this year.

The revolution in shale drilling that boosted U.S. oil output to a 25-year high this month will allow North America to join the ranks of the world's crude-exporting continents by 2040, Exxon said in its annual global energy forecast on Dec. 12. Europe and the Asia-Pacific region will be the sole crude import markets by that date, the Irving, Texas-based energy producer said.

Related: Oil Supply Surge Brings Calls to Ease U.S. Export Ban

Exxon's forecast, compiled annually by a team of company economists, scientists and engineers, didn't take into account any changes in Mexico, William Colton, the company's vice president of strategic planning, said during a presentation at the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington on Dec. 12.

Opening Mexico's oilfields to foreign investment would be "a win-win if ever there was one," said Colton, who described the move as "very good for the people of Mexico and people everywhere in the world who use energy."

$15 Billion Boost

Mexico Invites Foreigners to Boost Drilling

The bill ending the state monopoly was approved by the Mexican Congress Dec. 12. Before becoming law, the proposal must be ratified by state assemblies, most of which are controlled by proponents of the reform. Oil companies will be offered production-sharing contracts, or licenses where they get ownership of the pumped oil and authority to book crude reserves for accounting purposes. The contracts will be overseen by government regulators.

Though some foreign companies already operate in Mexico under service contracts with Petroleos Mexicanos, or Pemex, the reform could increase foreign investment by as much as $15 billion annually and boost potential economic growth by half a percentage point, JPMorgan Chase & Co. said in a Nov. 28 report.

The Whales!!!

For the past two years we have had a great number of whales near shore during January and February. This year, many people (myself included) have taken advantage of charter boats going out almost every day that the weather permits (and that has been almost every day lately) Here are just a couple of the literally hundreds of great photos that I have seen which were taken right here in our back yard. What a great place to spend your time. Beauty is all around us.
Here is a Whale Tail with the Sonoran Sky in the background. Easy to see how close to shore they come. You don't have to go far out to experience them.

Here is one in front of the Sonoran Sea Resort

Hump Back whale breaching. Whales sometimes breach in order to remove fish and barnacles that have attached themselves for a free ride.

While all of the photos are impressive, this one stands out. This is an actual photo of one of our full time Rocky Point residents getting up close and personal with a whale while on her paddle board. That is definitely being in the right place at the right time. We'll have to start calling her Whale Whisperer.

IRS Offers Good News for Mexico Property Buyers

A recently announced ruling by the Internal Revenue Service could save U.S. citizens buying homes in Mexico thousands of dollars and endless headaches.

After lengthy discussions, the IRS formally acknowledged that fideicomiso--the Mexican land trusts foreigners must use to buy property along the coast--are not "trusts" under the definition of the U.S. tax code.

Foreigners can't directly own land along the coast. Instead, the fideicomiso are set up by the bank to hold the title for the property, which can be sold or transferred at any time without the bank's involvement.

If the fideicomiso were considered "trusts" by the IRS, owners would be required to fulfill all the filing obligations and fees associated with a trust.

But the recently issued Rev. Rul. 2013-14 confirms that the tax group won't challenge the Mexican trusts, according to a statement from tax and accounting firm KPMG.

"Although the IRS in late 2012 issued a private letter ruling... that reaches the same conclusion as today's revenue ruling, Rev. Rul. 2013-14 constitutes published guidance that all taxpayers can rely on," KPMG writes in its report.

The IRS explored three different scenarios for buying a residential property through a fideicomiso--buying with a U.S. limited liability company, using a C corporation or a direct individual purchase. In all three scenarios the IRS concluded that Mexican trusts do not constitute the IRS' definition of trust, KPMG reports.

Attention to City Streets

 Press Release

Funds from the Federal Maritime Zone tax (ZOFEMAT) of SEMARNAT (Secretary of the Environment and Natural Resources) were used to put two street sweepers and a Bobcat utility machine into operation. This is part of a campaign to clean-up and fill pot holes along many of Puerto Peasco's main roads.

Mayor Gerardo Figueroa Zazueta, accompanied by his wife Rafaela Flix de Figueroa, ZOFEMAT Coordinator Benjamn Ortega Blanco, and City Secretary Oscar Villavicencio together launched the clean-up efforts on Monday, Jan. 13th at the intersection of Calle Luis Encinas and No Reeleccin.

Beaches

ZOFEMAT Coordinator Benjamn Ortega Blanco reported taxpayer confidence in the federal zone helped with Municipal collections in order to pay the corresponding SEMARNAT fee. This in turn freed up resources to be used in the Federal Maritime Zone.

While the equipment is to be used for beach clean-up, ZOFEMAT further authorized its use to assist with clean-up efforts along city roads. This machinery will contribute to the work of both Public Services and OOMISLIM (Sanitation Department).

Ortega Blanco added they plan to acquire additional items in coming days, including a dump truck, tractor, garbage truck and additional beach clean-up equipment.

Heberto Reyna Orozco, City Director for Public Projects, reports the campaign will include filling in 2500 square meters of pot holes across the city, as well as laying 156 cubic meters of asphalt.

Visit the Pinacate Reserve
Just 1/2 Hour from Rocky Point

If you haven't been to the Pinacate Reserve, you are missing out on a very memorable experience. You should absolutely make this side trip a part of your travel plans when visiting Rocky Point. Most visitors don't even know that it exists let alone that it is so close by. Here is a bit of information:

El Pinacate y Gran Desierto de Altar Biosphere Reserve

Sonora, Mexico

There's a place just south of the Arizona border where a field of 400, four-million-year-old volcanic craters dent the earth and sand made from rock as far away as the Grand Canyon cascades down dunes over 300 feet tall. This place is El Pinacate y Gran Desierto de Altar Biosphere, also known as Sierra Del Pinacate.

This place is the antithesis of a tourist trap. It's the kind of place that draws extreme adventurers like astronauts needing a place to train in lunar-like conditions. But in these seemingly desolate, pockmarked surroundings, Pinacate is booming with biodiversity. Fringe-toed lizards skim the sizzling sand and the Costa's hummingbird braves the desert to suck from native, nectar-filled ocotillo plants, alongside close to 300 species of mammals, birds, reptiles and amphibians, not to mention over 500 plants. In fact, the area gets its name from the foul-smelling Pinacate beetle.

Adventurous spirits will want to start their trek to Pinacate from its sister park at Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument in Arizona, where the staffs of both parks keep a protective eye on the Sonoran pronghorn. Head south on Arizona's Route 85 and continue down Mexico's Federal Highway 8 to the reserve's main entrance for unparalleled hiking, climbing and biking.

Best Time to Visit:

Pinacate is in the hottest part of the Sonoran Desert; so visiting in spring and winter would be best. If you time your visit with a visit to Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument, its most popular months are December through March when temperatures are in the 60s.

What to Do:

Just 12 miles from the entrance of Pinacate, get as close to a lunar experience as you can by hiking along the rim of El Elegante, a mile-wide, almost-perfectly-round, 800-foot-deep crater. NASA sent their space men here to train for Apollo missions in the 60s and 70s. The view of the volcanic scarred terrain from here may feel as foreign as being on the moon. Other nearby craters worth a visit are Cerro Colorado, a caldera that may reveal the eruptive beginnings of this place, Crater Molina, distinguished by its clover-leaf shape and the Sykes Crater with an opening a mile deep
Churros

If you've ever been to the State Fair, you have surely eaten a churro or two. These sweet treats are a favorite at all types of carnivals, fairs, or any gathering where the people crave something fast, sweet and delicious. They are abundant throughout Mexico and can vary quite a bit depending on region and preparer.

History is divided on how exactly churros came to exist. Some say they were the invention of nomadic Spanish shepherds. Living high in the mountains with no access to bakeries, the Spanish shepherds supposedly created churros, which were easy for them to cook in frying pans over fire. Lending credibility to this version of history is the fact that there exists a breed of sheep called the "Navajo-Churro", which are descended from the "Churra" sheep of the Iberian Peninsula; the horns of these sheep look similar to the fried pastry.

Another story says that Portuguese sailors discovered a similar food in Northern China called "You Tiao" and they brought it back with them. The Spanish learned of the new culinary treat from their neighbors, and put their own spin on it by passing the dough through a star-shaped tip which gives the churro its signature ridges.

Whether Spanish shepherds, Portuguese sailors or the Chinese get the credit for inventing the churro, it was the conquistadors who introduced them to Latin America. Since then, the modern day churro has undergone various reincarnations including guava-filled churros in Cuba, dulce de leche-filled churros in Mexico and a cheese-filled version in Uruguay.

Straight or spiral-shaped, with or without a dusting of cinnamon and sugar, dipped in chocolate or straight out of a greasy paper bag on the street, churros, in all their creative variations, will continue to be a popular favorite - and with a recipe in hand, you can have one whenever you feel like it. And, they couldn't be easier to make.

Ingredients
Churros:
1 cup water
1/2 cup butter or margarine
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 cup all-purpose flour
3 eggs, beaten
Vegetable oil, for frying
1/4 cup sugar
1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon, optional

Chocolate for dunking:
1 tablespoon cornstarch
2 cups milk
4 ounces dark chocolate, chopped
1/4 cup sugar

Directions

To make the churro dough: Combine 1 cup of water with the butter or margarine and the salt in a saucepan and bring to a boil over high heat. Using a wooden spoon, stir in flour. Reduce the heat to low and stir vigorously until the mixture forms a ball, about 1 minute. Remove the dough from the heat and, while stirring constantly, gradually beat the eggs into the dough.

To make the chocolate for dunking: In a small bowl, dissolve the cornstarch in 1 cup of milk and reserve. Combine the chocolate with the remaining cup of milk in a saucepan. Stirring constantly, melt the chocolate over medium-low heat. Whisk the sugar and the dissolved cornstarch into the melted chocolate mixture. Reduce the heat to low and cook, whisking constantly, until the chocolate is thickened, about 5 minutes. (Add extra cornstarch if it doesn't start to thicken after 5 minutes.) Remove the pan from the heat and whisk until smooth then reserve in a warm place.

Heat about 2 inches of oil in a heavy, high-sided pot over medium-high heat until the oil reaches 360 degrees F. Mix the sugar with the cinnamon on a plate and reserve.

Meanwhile, spoon the churro dough into a pastry bag fitted with a large tip. Squeeze a 4- inch strip of dough into the hot oil. Repeat, frying 3 or 4 strips at a time. Fry the churros, turning them once, until golden brown, about 2 minutes per side. Transfer the cooked churros to a plate lined with paper towels to drain.

When the churros are just cool enough to handle, roll them in the cinnamon-sugar (in Spain churros are simply rolled in sugar.)

Pour the chocolate into individual bowls or cups. Serve the warm churros with the chocolate dip.

Eat and Enjoy

El or La, a or o: Easy as Pie? or Fraught with Confusion for Gringos?

Ready for another attempt to confuse you with some interesting idiosyncracies about the Spanish Language? Well, here we go anyway.

Many assume that "o" endings means masculine & that "a" endings means feminine, and while this is usually pretty accurate, it can be a major cause of eye-rolling by knowledgeable Spanish speakers. Casual gringo usages of "el" and "la" also raise myriads of misunderstandings between good-intentioned gringos and their Spanish speaking/Mexican listeners.

Briefly consider how "a" and "o" endings or incorrect use of El or La can get gringos into trouble:

Raya / Rayo (One is a stripe or scratch or Manta Ray, while the other is lightning)

La papa / El Papa (potato v. the Pope)

Papa / Pap  (potato v. Dad)

El cometa / La cometa (comet v. kite)

Mama / Mam (breast v. mother)

La clera / El clera (anger v. cholera disease)

La coma / El Coma (comma v. coma)

La corte / El corte (court v. cut)

La parte / El parte (part/portion v. report/message)

Ready to consider the ever popular: derecha / derecho usages?

La derecha / El derecho are: Right hand side or political Right v. human rights)
~ but only as nouns ~

El lado derecho / La linea derecha are: The right hand side v. a straight line)
~ as adjectives ~

and

~ As an adverb: derecho = straight ahead ~

So "straight ahead" and "in a straight line" have opposite genders: (derecho - adverb vs. derecha - adjective).

Think you have derecho/derecha straightend out? Consider that "derecho" used as "el palo derecho", it means vertical or upright pole.

Confused? Good, that was the idea.

~ ~ Does this explain why workers or store clerks have looked at you funny, and then given you some unexpected answer or frustrating results? ~ ~

Why does this happen to so many Americans?

Unfortunately (or maybe fortunately if you're not trying to speak Spanish), English does not have gender-specific articles, so while listening to Spanish, typical Americans pay little attention to the  "El"s &  "La"s,  "a"s  & "o"s,  while Spanish, French, Italian, and German speakers are very attuned to these issues.

See you again next month. Until then, enjoy life. Remember that you will never again be as young as you are today. Come and visit Puerto Penasco if you get a chance. You'll be glad that you did.

Saludos, Jim Ringquist
