This is the month that we've all been waiting for. Someone upstairs finally flipped the switch and the weather has changed. The evenings and mornings are much cooler. Its still pretty warm during the day but the humidity seems to have disappeared and we should be in for at least two months of near perfect weather here in paradise. We may not have 4 seasons like many parts of the world but I would say that we have 3: Hot, Perfect, Chilly. We don't really get too cold here (although we usually do see a fair bit of medium-jacket weather during January and February). My personal observation is that more than 6 months of the year fall into the "Perfect" category.

Tourism and occupancy have been very strong over the Summer and I expect things to pick up even more this month as the weather becomes nice and relaxing on the beach becomes more comfortable again. We've seen double digit growth in tourism year after year for the past several years, and all indicators are that the growth will continue. That's good news for Rocky Point. While many here are still trying to recover from the recession, things continue to improve and you can tell by looking around.

There have been a couple recent stories in Spanish about the the Home Port and there was also a related interview with Sonora Director of Tourism recently on local radio. According the the interview, the construction should start again soon as they have been approved to use the cement "blocks" instead of the large boulders that they ran out of (and caused the delay). Tourism Director, Javier Tapia stated that he is 100% confident that the project will be completed, but it will be a bit behind the original schedule. I have omitted this month's segment on the ongoing project simply because of the lack of much confirmable information available right now. Hopefully, I will know more by my next newsletter on November 1st.

It seems that another Mama Sea Turtle made its way to lay eggs on Sandy Beach a few days ago, this time in front of the Sonoran Sun Resort. You can read about it below in the Potpourri section.

We've had two near misses with hurricanes over the past month. Luckily, Rocky Point is in a very protected area. I know that Arizona got a lot of rain from them but here in Penasco, it rained just enough to require another wash for my truck. The latest one did cause some major damage to Los Cabos though. There are relief efforts ongoing and they can use all the help that they can get. One option is listed below but I'm sure that there are many avenues in which to help.

The Sonoran Sea has a new store/coffee shop designed by us (Fernando Anaya, Sonoran Resorts CEO). Please try to stop by and check it out if you are near the Sandy Beach area. There is an article and link for photos below. The store will be for sale soon as well so if you're interested in buying it, give me a call.

If you need anything, don't hesitate to ask. Let me put my experience and expertise to work for you, and remember, as always, I'm here full time and I am more than happy to help you with whatever you need, whether Sonoran Resorts related or not. Just give me a call or send me an email any time and I will do my very best to help you. If I can't help you myself, I'm sure that I can point you in the right direction.

Please check out some of our condos for sale along the right column.
You can see all of our listings by going to our website:

14th Annual Rocky Point Bike Rally Dates: Thursday November 6 through Sunday November 9, 2014!

Arguably one of the most successful motorcycle rallies south of the border, the Rocky Point Rally attracts thousands of peaceful, fun-loving two- wheel enthusiasts from throughout Mexico, the U.S. and Canada who grace our streets and jump start our tourist season each November since 2001.

Since the dates this year are so close to the first of the month, we thought a preview in the October newsletter would be in order to help those planning to come down for the biggest party of the year in our little slice of paradise by the sea.

Beginning Thursday November 6, registration will be open from 10 AM until 5 PM at the Barclin Pemex station on the highway into Rocky Point. Just look for the huge inflated Tiger from long-time major sponsors, the Law Tigers. Also the annual Mystery Poker Run  starts Thursday in Lukeville. The Poker Run will cost $10.00 USD (charity donation) payable when you turn in your card Friday evening at Playa Bonita Hotel.

Registration is $15 USD, 100% of which is donated to the seven official Rally charities (Red Cross, Fire Department, La Montaa School for children with special needs, Jos Dvalos Home for the Elderly, George Papanicolaou for Women's cancer testing and awareness and the Puerto Peasco and Sonoyta offices of Integral Family Development (DIF). Over the years, more than $130,000 USD have been raised for these charities through registration fees and Mystery Poker Runs by the kind and generous Rally participants. In fact, the community benefits many ways from the major event. The organizing committee spends almost all their budget locally on such things as printing, website design, silk screening, stage sound and lighting and many other expenses. This is in addition to the thousands donated to charities from registration fees, the Poker run, Passport and Condo run activities. Last year over $10,000 US dollars were donated to these seven charities.

Everyone involved in making the Rocky Point Rallies run so smoothly are volunteers made up of  residents who care about the economy of this beach side community. Among the organizing committee members are Oscar Palacio Soto (one of the initial founders from 2001), his assistant Viry from Playa Bonita, Nora Palacio, a strong part of the George Papanicolaou group (who print up the official t-shirts),  the Puerto Peasco Convention and Visitors Bureau, Fausto Soto and Russ Black for the Pinacate ride, Beverly Arrowood from Sonoran Resorts as the US volunteer coordinator, Shandra Keesecker-Rivero of RP360 as Rally Production Assistant, Law Tigers who handle the key promotions in the US, the City of Puerto Peasco, Civil Protection, as well as all of the various sponsors who come on board each year, and the volunteers from the numerous charity groups, as they've also offered a number of ideas; and so many more.

The registration fee includes a bag of goodies that include an assortment of cool Rally stuff like official pins, patches, koozies and bandanas-plus one entry for a great prize to be drawn on Friday night at the Playa Bonita Beach Bash. The Mystery Poker Run winners will be announced on Friday as well.

For an extra $5.00 donation, you'll receive a "Passport" to visit up to 50 local businesses who will stamp your passport and on Saturday night, the stamps, each with a mystery value, will be counted and the winner announced at the big concert.

Music has always been a major part of the rally, and this year the committee has really outdone itself with the quality and variety of the entertainment lineup which will guide listeners on a tour through blues, rock and roll, country and country rock with recording talent like Nashville artist, Matt Farris, himself a biker and past Rally attendee who's featured at the traditional Friday night Beach Fiesta on the beach front patio of Playa Bonita Hotel from 5-8PM.

This year the annual Thursday Kick-Off party will happen at Banditos Cantina on the entrance road to the Sonoran Sea and Spa Resorts. The Black Moods, who took this year's RCPM Circus Mexicus crowd on a raucous rock 'n' roll ride that included several of their hits and the patented high flying leaps of lead singer Josh Kennedy who seems to catch air with each beat, each note, leaving it all on the stage for his mesmerized fans!

After the kick-off party Thursday and beach bash on Friday, music always continues until the wee hours on Calle 13 by Rally staples, Pachuco Blues from Tijuana, accompanied by donut burnouts, wheelies and other feats of motorcycle skills along the street.

Saturday officially begins with the annual Bike Parade departing at noon in front of  Red Cross on Fremont...

Welcome to the newest amenity on Sandy Beach by your Sonoran Resorts Group!

Chamber of Commerce Collection Site for Los Cabos Relief

The Puerto Peasco Chamber of Commerce has created a collection site for our friends in Los Cabos, Baja California.

Los Cabos is currently facing a never before seen situation following the impact of Hurricane Odile, which while it did not cause fatalities has taken an enormous toll on the population.  The local Chamber of Commerce is asking for the assistance of the entire Puerto Peasco community to collect much needed items including:  bottled water, canned food, blankets, rice, beans, coffee, sugar, medicine, etc.

The Puerto Peasco Chamber of Commerce office, and collection site, is located on the east side of Plaza del Camarn (Shrimp Plaza) and open daily from 8 a.m. - 3 p.m.

Your assistance is greatly needed and appreciated!

But, there is always some good news if you look for it:

Texas Couple Says the People of Mexico Saved Their Life During Hurricane Odile.

A Frisco couple is back home after surviving Hurricane Odile, and their six-day odyssey to get back to North Texas.

It was meant to be a romantic getaway in the Pacific resort of Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, but shortly after it started, Rachel and Jamey Bellan had to hunker down to ride out the storm. Their nightmare began when water started rushing into their room.

"It was just one of those things where you thought it was going to be the end of your life... you really did," Rachel said.

They weren't hurt, but they shared smartphone video that shows their soaked room with blown-out windows, and pillows as their only protection. Odile stripped the hotel of all ways to communicate, so the Bellans said the hotel made the decision on to get them out.

"Their only alternative was to load us up on buses and drive up north to Southern California and get across the border and get to San Diego," Jamey said.

That meant a packed blue bus, with little food and water, traveling along a two-lane Baja California highway. They admit they were afraid, especially when they found the road was blocked in a small town.

"It was raining up in the mountains from the storm, and the heavy river stream had taken out the road, so this entire roadway had submerged into this river," Jamey said.

The busload of tourists, feeling vulnerable, sat for 30 hours waiting for water to recede. That's when the Bellans said their real saviors emerged - not the government, but the townspeople.

"They were making us food, coffee, hot dogs, tacos... they were providing everything to us," Rachel said. "They didn't even have anything, and they did everything they could."

One man took a chance with his own bulldozer, and that changed everything.

"He put that into the river - not knowing if it was going to fry out, if he was going to lose his own equipment - and he was doing it to get us across the river and back to our families and back to the U.S.," Jamey said.

It worked.

The bus arrived in San Diego on Friday night, and the Bellans got back home on Saturday, full of perspective...and gratitude.

"The people that we feared most are the people that ended up saving our lives," Jamey said.

"We're just so happy to be back," Rachel added.

And they're glad to have their two little girls back in their arms.

More Than 2 Million Americans Chose Mexico As Their Retirement Destination

It's official now. Mexico is one of the hottest retirement destinations in the world. According to a news article in Latin American Herald Tribune, more than 2 million Americans retirees settled down in Mexico after their retirement. The figures were revealed by the Tourism Secretary Gloria Guevara.

During the inauguration of the 1st National Forum for Retired Americans: Expectations and Solutions of Life in Mexico, the Secretary said that Mexico offers such products as medical tourism, rest and relaxation tourism, and business tourism, plus some of the nicest beaches and friendliest people in the world.

Retirees look for good weather, affordable medical care, cheap real estate and a lower cost of living while searching for a retirement destination and Mexico ticks all the boxes.

The Secretary also emphasized that retired Americans are an important segment for the economy of the nation's tourist destinations. Apart from the US citizens, Canadians also prefer Mexico as retirement destination.

According to the latest statistics 53% of retirees making their home in Mexico are under the age of 65 and choose Mexico for the favorable living conditions and stable economy.

Mexico is just south of the border with USA and is geographically and culturally very close to its North Americans neighbors. With ease of accessibility and affordable real estate destinations, Mexico is often the first and best choice for retirees. If you haven't been here (or been here lately), come and see for yourself. You won't be disappointed.

The Value of Old Mexican Banknotes

You're planning another visit to Mexico and, after rummaging through the drawers to find your passport, hey presto! ...some notes appear with "Banco de Mexico" printed on them.  You glance at the value ($1000 pesos, $50,000 pesos, $100,000 pesos) and your mind goes into mathematical over-drive: so what is $100,000 divided by today's peso exchange rate?

Mexico encountered two economic crises in recent decades: one in the early eighties and another in the mid-nineties.  Both events had different causes although each imposed the same penalty on Mexico's peso: devaluation.

In the 1980's Mexico's currency was denominated not in ones and tens, but in hundreds and thousands.  $50,000 peso notes were commonplace, and in the early 90's, the Bank of Mexico issued a $100,000 peso bank note.  At the time, these were worth about US $16.50 and US $33 respectively.

On January 1, 1993 Mexico re-based its currency, removing three zeroes from all denominations and launching the New Peso (Nuevo Peso).  A new series of bank notes appeared, looking exactly like the old ones, with two exceptions: the new ones had three zeros missing from the numerals and the words "Nuevos Pesos" were added.

In October 1994 a brand-new series of bank notes was released and the word "Nuevos" was dropped as Mexico's currency stabilized and people got used to the new currency.

The Bank of Mexico honors all genuine notes it issues, regardless of their date of emission, at present-day values.  The present-day value is given on this page of the banks web site. For the current value of old Mexican coins, see this page .

For example, a $1000 peso note dating back to the late 70's/early 80's is worth just one Mexican peso today.  A $100,000 peso note dating back to 1991 is exchangeable today for a $100 peso note with a value of around US$9.  $1 and $5 peso notes dating back to pre-1975 are worth fractions of a cent and are now no more than museum pieces and collector's items.

Stores and retail banks won't accept old bank notes; you need to take them to the Bank of Mexico.  Unless you have a lot of the more recent old-style bank notes, it may be best to just keep the ones you have as a souvenir.

Air Conditioning Unit Donated by Sonoran Resorts Ends Sweltering Heat at Children's Crisis Shelter-They Ask For Blankets!

"It has been a long time since the kids have asked for blankets," Amores de Peasco volunteer, Kathleen Duncan told Sonoran Resorts CEO, Fernando Anaya with sincere gratitude.  It was only a day after Sonoran Resorts had used part of the funds raised from their annual Las Vegas Night for Charity fundraising event to purchase and install a heavy duty rooftop air conditioning unit at the DIF children's crisis shelter in the San Rafael district of Puerto Peasco.

Although the old unit had been out of service "for quite a while" the ducts were in working order so the cooler shown in the photos did the job, apparently quite well.

Mr. Anaya was quick to pass the gratitude on to the generous Casino "gamblers" made up of our inspired residents and visitors who love this great community and its local citizens. Purchasing the air conditioning unit was a decision made by First Lady Rafaela Felix de Figueroa, who serves as President of DIF,  during awalk-through the facility with Mr. Anaya.

Even after the purchase and installation of air conditioning, Sonoran Resorts still has additional funds dedicated to the Amores de  Peasco crisis shelter for improvements and equipment. The First Lady and her staff are in the process of analyzing the facility's needs at this time.

"We are prepared to act immediately in fulfilling any requests by DIF and look  forward to doing so. This shelter provides life-saving services to abandoned, neglected and abused children here", remarked Fernando Anaya. "Sonoran Resorts are fortunate to have this fun event and so many generous people who participate to keep the funds flowing to such a worthy cause", he continued.

Isn't it nice to learn exactly where our donations through events like Las Vegas Night for Charity are going, and that they are actually making a difference in someone's life?

Legends of Beach Volleyball and Tri-Ball Tournaments at Sonoran Sea Resort Beach October 25 & 26

Outta Town Productions, founded by long time Rocky Point lover, Luis Garrido, who've  brought beach volleyball tournaments to Rocky Point since way back in 1992, return this month with  two special events. On Saturday October 25th is the annual co-ed 4's tournament on the beach in front of the Sonoran Sea and Sonoran Spa Resorts. As always local teams are invited and encouraged to enter the tournament.

BooBar, malecn staple, and this year's Friday night Legends pre-party place, usually sponsors a team of hard playing staff members who have placed (and won cash) almost every year since they've been competing.  Mare Blu Restaurant and Wrecked at the Reef are other local businesses who field teams for the tournament. If you are a business, a group of friends who like the challenge of beach volleyball, or even an individual, be sure and contact www.OuttaTownProductions.com for details and to register.

Many of those who have participated in the Outta Town beach tournaments in Rocky Point over the last dozen years, have gone on to become members of national professional volleyball associations, hence this year's theme, honoring these "Legends of Beach Volleyball." Each registrant will receive a commemorative T-shirt with the cool Legends logo design depicted at the top of this story.

We can always count on something unique from an Outta Town Productions event, and this year Luis brings us Tri-Ball, the newest and most challenging twist on volleyball to come about in decades. One reason for the exploding growth of fast, furious and fun Tri-Ball across the nation is that it is a perfect tournament game. It involves an addicting combination of three teams of  co-ed 3's simultaneously playing one ball over three nets attached to one center pole on a circular court. Did we say fast, furious, fun? Just imagine! Luis discovered Tri-Ball back in 2009, loved the fast play and saw immediately how it equalized the height advantage of traditional volleyball.

Tri-Ball was a one-off game when Outta Town Productions discovered its potential as a tournament sport and took on the task of developing standardized rules, which included designing the complex software for a tournament of 16 teams where each team plays on each third of the court with less idle time than traditional volleyball tournaments. The result?  A fast, furious, defense focused game that not only involves each player in every play but teaches strategy, cut shots, court awareness, teamwork and improves reflexes. It only takes about one game to become competitive at any level and the average game lasts about 15 minutes. For more info go to www.tri-ball.com.

In addition to the Tri-Ball challenge on Sunday,  there's a special co-ed 2's volleyball tournament co-hosted by Hard Driven Volleyball friends of Luis on the regular courts. Make sure you go to www.outtatownproductions.com for all the details and to register your team in one of the five divisions including an Open and a Recreational division. The limited spaces sell out almost every year. If you don't have a team, let them know and you'll be teamed with other individuals.

Comments most commonly heard about Outta Town Productions' volleyball events include, "...best run tournament...", ",,,most fun we've ever had-with or without tequila..." and, "...we could not have been any closer to the sea...Rocky Point is so much fun!"

There is also a big party on Saturday at the new Banditos Cantina, the "Third World Cantina" of Roger Cline and the Peacemakers, on the entrance road to the Sonoran Spa and Sonoran Sea resorts.

Special rates are available for volleyball players through Rocky Point Reservations at www.RPRMexico.com.

Sonoran Sun Resort Hosts Turtle That Lays 67 Eggs On The Beach!

According to the detailed security report of the Sonoran Sun security staff, on Friday morning about 6 AM September 26th a Sonoran Sun owner saw a sea turtle on the beach. He called security and the alert security personnel discovered where the turtle had laid her eggs. They called the police who kept the area safe until Saturday morning when a Marine Biologist from the Mayan Palace could come out. She took 67 eggs to be incubated for 30 to 40 days at which time they will be returned to the beach, carefully replaced in the exact same spot and closely guarded until they hatch and make their way to the sea. What a dramatic story of life on the beach and how it affects the sensitivities of everyone who lives here to work together for the protection and preservation of marine life!

South Side Jillz Restaurant and Bar

Is coming along just fine according to Jill and she expects it to be open in time for a REAL HALLOWEEN COSTUME PARTY  on the 31st .  As much as she loves Halloween and costumes (Jill is the self acclaimed "Queen of Costumes") we'd advise everyone who has been missing a good Halloween Costume Celebration to start creating (or pulling your collection out of the trunk for inspection)! Watch her Facebook page for up to the minute updates on her progress.

Why Being Near The Ocean Can Make You Calmer And More Creative

Since ancient times, humans have assigned healing and transformational properties to water. In early Rome, baths were an important part of cultural life, a place where citizens went to find relaxation and to connect with others in a calming setting. In ayurveda, the ancient Indian medicinal wisdom, and traditional Chinese medicine, the water element is crucial to balancing the body and creating physical harmony. Rivers have long been seen as sacred places, and in a number of different spiritual contexts, water has symbolized rebirth, spiritual cleansing and salvation.

Today, we still turn to water for a sense of calm and clarity. We spend our vacations on the beach or at the lake; get exercise and enjoyment from water sports like surfing, scuba diving, sailing, and swimming; refresh ourselves with long showers and soothing baths, and often build our lives and homes around being near the water.

Our affinity for water is even reflected in the near-universal attraction to the color blue. We're naturally drawn to aquatic hues -- the color blue is overwhelming chosen as the favorite color of people around the world, and marketing research has found that people tend to associate it with qualities like calm, openness, depth and wisdom.

Wallace J. Nichols, a marine biologist, believes that we all have a "blue mind" -- as he puts it, "a mildly meditative state characterized by calm, peacefulness, unity, and a sense of general happiness and satisfaction with life in the moment" -- that's triggered when we're in or near water.

"We are beginning to learn that our brains are hardwired to react positively to water and that being near it can calm and connect us, increase innovation and insight, and even heal what's broken," Nichols writes in Blue Mind: The Surprising Science That Shows How Being Near, In, On, or Under Water Can Make You Happier, Healthier, More Connected, and Better at What You Do, published in July. "We have a 'blue mind' -- and it's perfectly tailored to make us happy in all sorts of ways that go way beyond relaxing in the surf, listening to the murmur of a stream, or floating quietly in a pool."

In our everyday lives, we're constantly bombarded with sensory stimuli, whether from our devices, busy homes and offices, or hectic city streets. Our brains need downtime, but they rarely get enough of it.

Being around water gives our brains and our senses a rest from over stimulation.

"The sound around us, from an auditory perspective, is simplified. It's not quiet, but the sound of water is far more simple than the sound of voices or the sound of music or the sound of a city," Nichols tells the Huffington Post. "And the visual input is simplified. When you stand at the edge of water and look out on the horizon, it's visually simplified relative to the room you're sitting in right now, or a city you're walking through, where you're taking in millions of pieces of information every second."

When we're near, on, in or under water, we get a cognitive break because there's simply less information coming in. Our brains don't shut down -- they keep working, but in a different way, according to Nichols. "When you have that simplified, quieter 'blue' space, your brain is better at a different set of processes," he says.

Many of us love to sit near the ocean or a river and gaze out at the water -- often, we can sit for long periods simply observing the gentle movements of the water. Why? Though we may not be conscious of it, the water could be inducing a mildly meditative state of calm focus and gentle awareness.

When we're by the water, our brains are held in a state of mild attentiveness -- what Nichols calls a "soft fascination." In this state, the brain is interested and engaged in the water, taking in sensory input but not distracted by an overload of it, as we might be with the "hard fascination" we experience while watching an action movie or playing a video game.

Being in a mindful state -- in which the brain is relaxed but focused -- benefits the mind and body on a number of different levels. A growing body of research has found myriad benefits associated with mindfulness, including lower stress levels, relief from mild anxiety, pain and depression, improved mental clarity and focus, and better sleep quality.

Kathleen Duncan, aka Tia Katy, at the DIF Amores de Peasco children's crisis shelter here in Puerto Peasco and whose marvelous volunteer work we've written about  on numerous occasions (click TiaKaty for the latest one)  has come up with another creative way to make donations to support these abandoned and abused kids, and this one doesn't cost Arizona residents anything!

She recently shared this information with her list of supporters of Amores de Peasco, and we think it's worthwhile to share with all our subscribers since, even though you may not be an Arizona resident, there's a good chance you know someone who is.

One of Kathleen's major goals was to make donations to Amores de Peasco eligible for tax deductible donations from the U.S.  She was able to accomplish that goal earlier this year by having Amores de Peasco become an official part of Steps of Love, a 501c3 non-profit organization originally founded to help support a small orphanage in Sonoita, Sonora, Mexico. They now help support Amores de Peasco as well.

It didn't take the passionate Kathleen long to work out a win-win fundraising opportunity with the tax-deductible status. Here is her recent announcement about a way Arizona residents can help her kids without costing them anything.

Read her explanation of this unique opportunity along with her Frequently Asked Questions Sheet and fill out the simple Sponsor Form. You couldn't be doing this for a more deserving cause-saving the children!

Hola Friends of Amores de Penasco,

I wanted to let you know about an opportunity for Arizona residents to make a donation to support Amores de Peasco without costing them anything! Although I know that many of you don't live in AZ and so do not pay AZ State taxes, I also know that you probably still have a lot of friends and family living in AZ who do pay taxes here:) So, I am hoping you all can help me spread the word about this!

1)  I have entered a 'Steps of Love' team in the North Phoenix Kiwanis Club's 22nd Annual Walk-a-Thon, which will be held at Metro Center Mall the morning of October 18th.

2) Because the North Phoenix Kiwanis Foundation is qualified as an AZ Charitable Tax Credit organization, donations of up to $200 for individuals and $400 for those who file jointly get a dollar for dollar tax credit. So, donors essentially get their donation back when they file their taxes (their State Tax bill is reduced by the entire amount of their donation)

3) After the event, the Kiwanis Club makes a donation to the shelter equal to 70% of all the tax credit donations that our team brings in for the walk-a-thon. The other 30% of each donation remains with the Kiwanis Club's Charity which helps support kids from low income families in the Washington School District.

Although this works the same as the AZ private and public school tax credit donations that many people are familiar with, it is another, completely separate tax credit opportunity and they can do it in addition to the school tax credits. There is no limit to how many tax credit donations we can bring in for the walk-a-thon and so this is a great way to try to raise some much needed money for the shelter!

So, if you do pay AZ taxes and have not already made your maximum AZ Charitable Tax Credit donation for 2014 I would really appreciate your considering making a donation of either $200 or $400 to the North Phoenix Kiwanis Foundation Club rather than sending that same amount to the AZ Department of Revenue this year. And whether or not you live in AZ, I would really appreciate you all sharing this information with your AZ friends and family and anyone else who may be interested in choosing where at least a little of the their 2014 State Tax money goes.

Thanks so much for any support/assistance you can provide!

Hasta Luego,

Kathleen

Woodstock in Mexico? Boomer Fest Days is Cancelled

Anita Kaltenbaugh - Phoenix Mexico Travel Examiner

Peace, love and happiness was supposed to be in the air in Rocky Point, Mexico this month with a festival called Boomer Fest Days. Popping up on billboards in Phoenix, websites on the internet and even morning shows everything was a discussion on "Boomers". The ads featured Grateful Dead figures in sunglasses, driving around in a hippie van tattooed with peace signs and pulling an RV loaded with golf clubs on a road trip to Puerto Penasco, Mexico (better known as Rocky Point, just 3.5 hours south of Phoenix, AZ) . Well, they can still come and have a great weekend, but sadly, no festival will occur...

It was supposed to be a celebration to mark the 45th anniversary of Woodstock. If anyone remembers slipping around in the mud at the "3 Days of Peace & Music festival" held at Max Yasgur's 600-acre dairy farm in the Catskills you should have bought a ticket and planned a trip to Rocky Point, Mexico in October. Instead, the 3 day event concert was cancelled due to low ticket sales.

Boomer Fest Days was slated to recreate that Woodstock feeling, featuring at least five of the bands from the original Woodstock, but in a 2014 sort of way. They planned on having art and wine, cars and light shows, but unfortunately it will not happen, at least not this year. "Boomerville" would have taken place on a sandy beach of the Sea of Cortez and throughout Puerto Penasco.

Boomer Fest Days or BFD has had to reschedule twice and possibly now a 3rd time? Coachella Music Festival, one of the largest music festivals in the world, herding in 80,000 people to the middle of the desert, needed several years to make it the epic success it is today. "IT takes a village" stated Henry Altman, Producer/Managing Member of Boomer Fest Days, and yes, it takes the support of boomers, lovers and fans of music to bring it all-together--Imagine the coordination involved.

A Puerto Penasco favorite and pioneer of festivals, Roger Clyne and the Peacemakers in Rocky Point was one of the acts, but apparently this was not enough to bring in the crowds the event needed to be successful. Other featured bands for the festival from the Boomer era included Styx, John Kay and Steppenwolf, Dave Mason's Traffic Jam, The Edgar Winter Band, Jefferson Starship, Christopher Cross, Canned Heat, Big Brother & the Holding Company, Country Joe McDonald, Javier Batiz and Steve McCarty.

All were hoping," if they built it they will come", but it wasn't enough. It would have been groovy looking out at the beautiful Sea of Cortez, basking in the glorious October weather, and hear, "Magic Carpet Ride" by Steppenwolf or "Lady" by Styx with a little Janis Joplin music.

Guess we will have to wait for another time.

Hopefully someone will try their hand at another type of festival next year. Rocky Point has a beautiful backdrop to have a festival. If you want more information or refunds on tickets go to www.Boomerfestdays.com (In-Ticketing is a licensed, bonded ticket agency for BFD). And don't give up on the music.!

A Universe of Tide Pools in Rocky Point, Mexico

Remember in the movie "Men in Black" when Frank (the alien pug) admonished Agents J and K for their lack of imagination regarding the size and location of a galaxy? "The galaxy is here!" he said. "You humans! When're you gonna learn that size doesn't matter? Just 'cause something's important doesn't mean it's not very, very small."

Tide pools are like that. Often very very small, they are whole galaxies unto themselves. If you peer into one long enough to become engrossed with the swirl and intricacy of life unfolding within its boundaries, you will realize that you have entered into a whole universe previously unknown to you, with each tide pool its own busy little galaxy.

Rocky Point is one of the best places I've ever known for the exploration of tide pools, and for the most part they are quite easy to access. Furthermore, because of the extreme tides you can access all of the major intertidal subzones without difficulty, from the Spray/Splash Zone of barnacles and lichens to the High and Mid-Tide Zones of hermit crabs, sea anemones, crabs and starfishes to the Low Tide Zone which teems with both vegetable and animal life of astonishing variety.

The Mid Zone is the most active because it is fully covered and uncovered each day, with many creatures moving in and out in search of food. It is perhaps the most fun for kids of all ages. Here you can watch the drama of hermit crabs battling to defend their territories, star fish, sea stars, sea slugs, mussels, sea urchins, tiny brine shrimp, squid and more, all pursuing the minutiae of their daily lives.

If you're lucky you can watch colorful sea anemones arguing over territory, their white 'fighting' tentacles reaching out to sting each other over and over until one cries uncle. Once the war is over the loser usually moves.

It's a great temptation to pick stuff up for closer examination (what is more exciting to kids than picking up a shell and discovering a crab living inside?) But make sure your children are careful about what they touch, because some of those wonderful creatures are toxic! And when the exploration is finished, be sure anything picked up is put back where it was found. Life is precious, even to the exotic inhabitants of those intertidal galaxies.

Some of the best places in Rocky Point for tide pooling: Cholla Bay; the southern end of Sandy Beach; Playa Bonita/Hermosa; Playa Mirador; the southern end of Las Conchas. There are other good places, too, awaiting your discovery.

The best places to learn about Puerto Penasco's tide pools: CEDO (Intercultural Center for the Study of Deserts and Oceans) and CET-MAR Aquarium, and the beautifully illustrated book The Edge of the Sea of Cortez: Tidewalkers' Guide to the Upper Gulf of California, with more than 1,000 photos; and of course your own explorations.

Come discover the fascinating universe of tide pools in Rocky Point. Awaken your inner beachbum...

8 Signs You've Never Eaten Real Mexican Food

Since we do live in a tourist town, you really will be able to find most "tourist" foods here locally, but if you look behind the tourist front, you can still find some "real" Mexican food in Puerto Penasco.

1. You have no idea what a real taco is.

If you're about to try a taco in Mexico for the first time, please erase everything you think you know about a taco. Other than the word "taco," there's not much else in common between a Mexican taco and an American or international one.

First off, you probably think tacos have the following ingredients: sour cream, cheddar cheese, flour tortilla (or corn shell), and lettuce. Wrong. In Mexico, it's practically impossible to find a self-respecting taco stand that would allow these ingredients to be put together.

2. You're imagining "Giant Burritos."

Negative on the boot-sized Chipotle-style burrito, although you can find something of similar size in Baja: a plethora of meat, veggie, and salsa options added to a massive baked potato.

3. You've never heard of mole, pozole, blue-corn tortillas, elote, esquite, chiles en nogada, chicharrn en chile verde, tacos al pastor, alambre, gringa, atole, champurrado...the list goes on.

None of the above-mentioned dishes are easily found outside of Mexico, but they are some of the most popular things Mexican people eat. So as you venture into various eateries around the country, be open to the possibility of eating something you've never heard of, seen, or tasted before in your life.

4. You're expecting flour tortillas.

Although flour tortillas are relatively popular in northern Mexico and sometimes used to make quesadillas at suppertime around the country, they're not featured in Mexican cuisine. To avoid disappointment when craving flour tortillas, find a restaurant that serves fresh-made corn tortillas hot off the comal.

5. You're ready for margaritas and popping limes in your beer.

Although the world thinks of the margarita as a Mexican drink, it's highly unlikely you'll find one outside of the tourist destinations. And if you think Mexicans love to shove slices of lime down their beers, think again.

Sticking a foreign object into a beer is frowned upon - with the strange exception of the Michelada, wherein beer poured into a salt-rimmed glass with soy sauce, tamarind paste, clam juice, chili powder, lime juice, etc is somehow okay. Go figure.

6. You're expecting Tex-Mex guacamole.

Don't expect to find the chunky, pureed guacamole you're used to seeing everywhere in the States. Many places don't even serve the heavenly dip, while others mix it with green salsa, making a soupy guacamole with strong lime and tomatillo flavors and less emphasis on the avocado.

7. You have no context when it comes to chili content.

Many salsas in Mexico have a chili content that makes typical American/international-Mexican-restaurant-style salsa look like tomato sauce.

8. You fail to grasp the power of the tamal.

When you see doas with buckets of tamales, you're not seeing just another street vendor, but the product of half a day's work (or more) tending a fire, shaping corn masa in husks, adding chicken mole, or beans, or chapil leaves, or sweet elote. And then boiling them for hours.

On days when it's so hot you have no appetite, unwrapping a few steaming tamales can literally save your life. That's how good they are.
Speaking of "Real" Mexican Food: How About Making Some Birria?

Birria is a hearty and versatile Mexican stew. The stew is served year round, but especially during Christmas and other big holidays. It originates from the Mexican state of Jalisco, but can be found in restaurants and road side stands throughout much of Mexico. The stew can be prepared in a variety of ways, but most often uses goat meat.

Restaurants in Mexico specializing in birria will often decorate their walls or entrance with a pair of goat horns. The goat horns serve to announce the availability of birria. Goat horns are also considered an aphrodisiac and are a symbol of the virile animal.

The type and amount of chiles used in the broth base varies from chef to chef. Guajillo and ancho chiles are the most popular ones used in birria. These peppers are toasted and soaked in hot water before being removed and blended with either vinegar or water. The peppers are then used to form a paste that powers the spicy flavor of the dish.

In addition to goat meat, birria is also made with pork, beef, or lamb. Meat from the green iguana is also used in coastal areas of Jalisco. The meat is always marinated overnight using the chile paste and a mix of other spices, including cumin, oregano, and cloves. More than one kind of meat is often used when preparing the dish.

During the cooking process, the dish is left to simmer for hours. Although cooked with the meat still on the bone, patient chefs are rewarded with meat tender enough to fall off the bone. Birria is known both for its incredibly tender meat and rich, well-blended flavors.

Most commonly, the broth is thin and plentiful enough that it is served as a bowl of soup with the meat in it. When eating it this manner, the chunks of meat are removed and placed on a small corn tortilla adorned with sides, usually including cilantro and onions. After the meat and sides are in position, it is dipped in the broth and eaten.

The second manner of eating this dish is to remove the meat and cook down the broth until it is thick and saucy. This thick sauce is then poured over the meat. Tortillas, packed with the typical sides, are then covered with the meat and sauce.

This traditional Mexican dish is often sold by street vendors in Mexico. Birria can be made with beef, veal, pork, goat or lamb making it quite versatile. Many people will use more than one type of meat, combining one, two or three kinds in one dish. Poultry is not traditionally used in this dish. You will need a Dutch oven or large casserole dish with a tight fitting lid and a rack that sits inside.

Ingredients:
    • 3-4 lbs meat with or without bones
    • 4 guajillo chiles
    • 3 ancho chiles
    • 3 cascabel chiles
    • 1 teaspoon pepper
    • 1/4 teaspoon cloves
    • 1 tsp oregano
    • 1/4 tsp ground cumin
    • 1/2 teaspoon ground thyme or 2-3 sprigs
    • 6 garlic cloves, peeled and finely diced
    • 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
    • 2 bay leaves
    • 1 teaspoon salt
    • 1 onion, peeled and coarsely chopped
    • 2 tablespoons vinegar
    • 1 cup of water
    • 1 cup chopped onion
    • 1 cup chopped cilantro
    • Corn tortillas
Start Chile Paste
Toast the chiles on a hot pan until browned, but not burned. Remove the seeds and veins and cover with hot water for 15 to 20 minutes. When done soaking, process in blender with the vinegar to make a paste.

Meat Rub

Mix the salt, pepper, cloves, oregano, cumin, cinnamon and thyme. Rub the meat well with this mixture. Then coat the meat with half of the chile paste. Let marinate overnight.

Cook the Meat

Fill a Dutch oven with water. Add the chopped onion, bay leaf, garlic and the remaining chile sauce to the water. Place meat on a rack that sits just above the water. Place lid on and bake for 4 hours at 350 degrees.

Prepare the Dish
Remove the meat and place into serving bowls. There are two ways to finish. The first way has no broth. Remove bay leaves from liquid. If liquid is too watery, reduce by boiling in a small pan. Coat the meat chunks with the reduced chile sauce. Use meat to fill tortillas and top with onions and cilantro. The second way is to let the liquid cool slightly and remove the bay leaves. At this point some people blend the liquid. Add enough hot water to make at least 2 cups. Ladle the liquid over the meat and top with chopped onion and cilantro. Serve with warm corn tortillas. Enjoy!

Scared is Scared, No Matter What Language You Speak

In anticipation of Halloween (or Dia De Los Muertos in Mexico) I have assembled a few Scary Creatures and Legends from Latin folklore.

In true Latin Alternative style let's look at a couple of the more obscure legends & monsters used by parents throughout Latin America to scare young boys and girls. I introduced El Chupacabra and even La Llorona in previous newsletters so I decided to focus on a few other monsters & legends that might be a little more off the radar:

1. El Cuco or El Viejo del Saco

Though perhaps the story itself originated in Almera, Spain, El Hombre del Saco is well known throughout Latin America, and there are many versions of the tale. According to a Spanish legend, Francisco Ortega, aka el Moruno, there was a man sick with tuberculosis at the beginning of the XXth century. He was desperately looking for a cure for the disease, so he sought help from a Curandera. She told him he would be cured by drinking the blood of children and rubbing their fat on his chest. And so, el Moruno kidnapped a 7-year old boy, Bernardo, in a cloth bag, slit his underarm and drank his blood. El Cuco is known for walking up and down the streets at night with a black bag, scouting for those children who roam the streets or misbehave. There's that bedtime rhyme "Duermete nio, duermete ya; que viene el cuco, y te comer!" that you may or may not have heard as a kid. Oh also, in Spanglish zones such as some border regions of Mexico he is known as El Sacomn. Way to modernize El Cuco, that's better than any DJ name.

2. Luz Mala

Luz Mala is a folkloric myth from the gaucho era. It's not an actual character but, literally, a fluorescent beam that shines a few feet above the ground during the night. According to the legend, the peasants who saw the light at the horizon of dry hills were scared of it because they thought they were "lost souls" who hadn't received a christian baptism. They say that those who dare to look under the light can find metal objects or indigenous artifacts, but of course, looking at the light comes with lethal consequences. Supposedly a deadly gas emanates from the found objects, killing whomever discovers one.  Here's a short video clip about Luz Mala to help put you to sleep tonight.

3. El Silbn

According to legend, El Silbn is the ghost of a young man who killed his father, stripping his guts for not having brought back the deer guts he had asked for. But then the story complicates: As retribution, the young man's Grandpa orders him to be tied up to a post and whipped, his wounds washed with gin. In vindictive fashion, the young boy was then tossed in a cage with two rabid and hungry dogs. Then, grandpa cursed the young boy to carry his father's bones for all eternity. Be sure to listen for El Silbn's call: His whistle is described similar to the musical notes: do, re, mi, fa, sol, la, ti; in that order, rising the pitch until fa, and then lowering it till si. If you hear El Silbn's musical whistle from up close, there's no danger; however, if you hear it far away, run to your nearest chamana.

4. La Ciguapa

Maybe you have heard "Mi Ciguapa Linda", the Chichi Peralta merengue over and over at a Latin wedding, but La Ciguapa is no linda. The distinctive fact of this magical woman, like Chichi Peralta says, is that she walks "con los piesitos para atras y para alante la carita!" As in, a tan, long haired naked woman (whose night howl resembles a baby's shriek) roaming the mountains with her feet facing backwards. If you ever see a Ciguapa, they say, never look her in the eyes or you will be enchanted. Though she may seem timid, La Ciguapa seudces those of the opposite (male) sex, luring them into the woods and causing them to disappear. A similar one-legged version from Colombia is called La Patasola.

5. El Cadejo

Known in some variations throughout South Amrica, El Cadejo is the manifestation of a big, voracious black dog with red fire-like eyes. According to some versions, El Cadejo appears to victims at exactly medianoche. If you're a good person, a white dog, the counterpart of El Cadejo, will appear to defend you. If, on the contrary, you're not a good person, there's some ripping to shreds that might happen. They say that El Cadejo Malo roams the streets to snatch away "young maids" with braided hair. So watch out La Llorona wannabees.

See you again next month. Come and enjoy this beautiful month in Rocky Point. It just doesn't get any better than this! Stop in to say Hi if you can.
