ELAM at the ADEA Gies Awards

L-R: D. Walter Cohen, Page Morahan, Diane Magrane, Rosalyn Richman, Lisa Tedesco

ELAM was honored with the prestigious Gies award for Outstanding Vision by a Public or Private Partner Award Monday evening, March 9, in Boston during ADEA's annual session. We are so proud of ELAM's role in the advancements in academic leadership for women in dental medicine. You must know that this is all possible because of our ELAM alumnae, supporters, faculty and sponsors.

D. Walter Cohen, ELAM Founder, and Lisa Tedesco (ELAM '97, one of ELAM's first 2 dental Fellows) nominated ELAM for this prestigious award and introduced Diane, Page and Roz. As pleased as we are to have been chosen for this award, we were even more thrilled to be in the company of two other honorees with special ties to ELAM, Carol Aschenbrener, M.D., who has been part of the ELAM faculty since it began and Jeanne Sinkford, D.D.S., Ph.D., who was instrumental in opening ELAM to dental fellows.

During her acceptance speech, Diane Magrane asked all ELUMs to stand, all deans who supported an ELAM fellow over its 20 years, and then she asked anyone who had been mentored by an ELUM to stand. It was amazing to see the impact and network just in that room of 300+ people. As we graduate our 20th class this month, think about all you've done and how your connections and actions have supported the program and our mission.

This award is for all of us in the ELAM community!

The 5 Biases Pushing Women Out of STEM

Joan C. Williams writes "By now, we've all heard about the low numbers of American women in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). Some argue it's a pipeline issue - that if we can interest more young girls in STEM subjects, the issue will resolve itself over time. But that's not convincing. After all, the percentage of women in computer science has actually decreased since 1991..."

I ... don't expect all my female colleagues to go out of their way for me and sing "Kumbaya" together in the office, but I'm always stunned when a woman who could have been helpful to me wasn't, when a woman who could have been a mentor chose not to be, when a woman tried to hurt me because of her own fear...
