Applications Are In
The applications for the 2015-2016 ELAM Fellowship year are in! We are thrilled to have 95 applications from 79 institutions in Europe, Canada, and across the United States. Applicants hail from institutions of medicine, dentistry, public health, and osteopathic medicine. Our review committee has a tough task ahead of them, but we look forward to announcing another stellar class of ELAM Fellows in April.

Margaret H. Baron, M.D., Ph.D. (ELAM '13), has been appointed Senior Associate Dean for Education and Director of the MD-PhD Program at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai.
Millicent King Channell, D.O., M.A. (ELAM '14) has been appointed to the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education.
Linda Chaudron, M.D., M.S. (ELAM '14) received the University of Rochester Susan B. Anthony Lifetime Achievement Award for her work as a champion of women in science and medicine on February 7, 2015. In addition, on March 1, she will take on a new role as associate vice president and senior associate dean for Inclusion and Culture Development at the University of Rochester Medical Center and University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry.
AAMC CFAS News, February 6, 2015:
Marjorie Bowman, M.D., resigned this week as dean of Wright State University's Boonshoft School of Medicine. Margaret Dunn, M.D. (ELAM '96), a professor of surgery and executive associate dean, was appointed as the school's new dean, effective Feb. 3.
Debra Romberger, M.D. (ELAM '01), has been selected as the Henry J. Lenhoff Professor and Chairperson for the University of Nebraska Medical Center Department of Internal Medicine.

What Makes a Better Team? More Women
The teams with the smartest members aren't necessarily the smartest teams.
Researchers who teamed up with Alex Pentland and Nada Hashmi of MIT grouped 697 volunteers into teams with two to five members and studied how they performed several short tasks that required such common skills as logical analysis, brainstorming, planning, coordination and moral reasoning. Volunteers took individual IQ tests, but teams with the highest average IQs weren't necessarily the most successful. Nor were the teams with most extroverts nor the most highly motivated members.
The most successful teams with the best collective intelligence, it turned out, had three characteristics.

2015 Alma Dea Morani, MD Renaissance Woman Award
The Alma Dea Morani, M.D. Renaissance Woman Award recognizes an outstanding woman physician or scientist in North America who has furthered the practice and understanding of medicine and the medical sciences in our lifetime and made significant contributions outside of medicine; for example, in the humanities, arts or social sciences, whose determination and spirit have carried her beyond traditional pathways in medicine and science; and who challenges the status quo with an awareness of the potential and contributions from women. This award is presented annually by the Foundation for the History of Women in Medicine. You can review our list of past awardees here.
As the participation of women in the fields of medicine and the medical sciences continues to grow, it is important to recognize and celebrate the success of those women who pave the way for more women to follow. We encourage you to share this opportunity with your colleagues and professional networks, in support of the furtherance of women in medicine.
