The Real Disruptive Innovation in Education

Clayton Christensen, the Harvard Business School professor and author of The Innovator's Dilemma, is on record saying that as many as half of U.S. colleges and universities will go out of business in the next 15 years. His case for arguing this stems from extensive research on technology-driven "disruptive innovations" across many industries. In recent years, he has looked closely at the disruption caused by online courses in the education world, and his predictions have caused quite a stir.

The Wall Street Journal, December 1, 2014:

How to Train Your Voice to Be More Charismatic

Scientists are tuning in on the power of the spoken word, seeking the secrets of charisma.

By analyzing the harmonics of pitch, frequency and timbre, researchers at University of California, Los Angeles are discovering how charismatic public speakers use their voices to dominate, rouse and influence a large audience. They are finding that successful politicians in various countries, including Italy, France and Brazil, all share key vocal qualities that strongly affect how people respond to them, independent of the meaning of the words they say or the ideas they express.

The New York Times, December 6, 2014:

When Talking About Bias Backfires

Our culture's strong gender stereotypes extend beyond image to performance, leading us to believe that men are more competent than women. Managers - both male and female - continue to favor men over equally qualified women in hiring, compensation, performance evaluation and promotion decisions. This limits opportunities for women and deprives organizations of valuable talent. To solve this problem, business leaders, academics and journalists are working to raise awareness about bias. The assumption is that when people realize that biases are widespread, they will be more likely to overcome them. But new research suggests that if we're not careful, making people aware of bias can backfire, leading them to discriminate more rather than less.

Stop Using These Words In Your Emails!

Do you know how you sound in emails?

Without the benefit of being able to hear people's vocal inflections or see their faces, it can be challenging to interpret how the person on the other end of an email is feeling. Emoticons and exclamation points can only take you so far (especially in a business email), and in fact, sometimes formal business language can start to sound, well, negative without context.

The Last Word

AAMC CFAS News, December 12, 2014:

And finally, this may make you wonder what passes for "peer review" in some corners, but two scientific journals (not immediately focused on medicine) accepted a study conducted by Maggie Simpson and Edna Krabappel, Homer and Marge Simpson's third child (a forever baby) and Bart's woebegone school teacher, respectively. To make matters worse, portions of the study were "written" through a random text generator, according to a brief article in the Speaking of Science blog of The Washington Post.
