2015 ELUM Professional Development Program:

New Rules and New Ways of Working Together January 8-10

The Washington Duke Inn | Durham, NC

This three day program focuses on how we as alumnae work together and for each other. As the alumnae numbers grow, we need to explore how working together in more and better ways can be possible. This year's program also features rewarding peer mentor work with the current ELAM fellows on their Institutional Actions Projects, and enlightening sessions with Anne Litwin and Suzanne Danhauer.

The cost for the program is only $150 (only $100 if registered before December 1st) - travel and lodging is on your own. Look for more information soon, and for registration to begin in early November.

We hope to see you all there!

ELUM News

AAMC CFAS News, October 3, 2014:

Ann C. Bonham, Ph.D. (ELAM '02), AAMC chief scientific officer, was interviewed for a story on NPR's Cleveland affiliate that highlights the decrease in federal funding to NIH and its impact on medical research universities such as Case Western Reserve. During the past two years, the university averaged about $180 million in grants, down from nearly a quarter billion dollars in 2002. "Lack of NIH funding is bigger than just job security for researchers.... In the end, really, this is about health," Bonham said. "This is about creating new drugs, new treatments, new approaches to therapy that can make a difference."

Lesley Regan, M.B.B.S., M.D. (ELAM '11) was interview in the Autumn/Winter 2014 edition of Medical Woman. You can view the magazine here and read her story on page 14.

Why Saying Is Believing - The Science Of Self-Talk

From the self-affirmations of Stuart Smalley on Saturday Night Live to countless videos on YouTube, saying nice things to your reflection in the mirror is a self-help trope that's been around for decades, and seems most often aimed at women. The practice, we're told, can help us like ourselves and our bodies more, and even make us more successful - allow us to chase our dreams! Impressed, but skeptical, I took this self-talk idea to one of the country's leading researchers on body image to see if it's actually part of clinical practice.

The Last Word

AAMC CFAS News, October 3, 2014:

And finally, consider the rat. Or if you'd rather not, at least consider what Stephen Suomi, Ph.D., chief of the laboratory of comparative ethology at the NIH's National Institute of Child Health & Human Development, said of the rat when asked by the Atlantic for its "Big Question" series, "What animal has most changed the course of human history?" In his mind, rats are the ultimate "twofer" in terms of both aiding and abetting the course of human health.
