"Double Crap!" Abuse and Harmed Identity in Fifty Shades of Grey

While intimate partner violence (IPV) affects 25% of women and impairs health, current societal conditions-including the normalization of abuse in popular culture such as novels, film, and music-create the context to support such violence. Fifty Shades of Grey, a best-selling novel, depicts a "romantic" and "erotic" relationship involving 28-year-old megamillionaire, Christian Grey, and a 22-year-old college student, Anastasia Steele. We argue that the relationship is characterized by IPV, which is harmful to Anastasia.

Career Flexibility for Biomedical Faculty of Today and Tomorrow: A National Conference

March 14-15, 2015

BU Medical Campus | Boston, MA

This event will bring together leaders of medical schools, academic health centers, faculty affairs, and human resources to explore the best approaches and tools to provide flexibility and promote faculty development throughout the career lifecycle.

We encourage institutions to send teams to reinforce the benefit, to stimulate further development within the institution, and to join a learning networks and communities.  We've kept the registration fee very low at $100 to encourage participation, and we have scholarships available for participants.

The conference will include a poster session highlighting innovations in faculty career flexibility; I also encourage you to consider submitting a poster abstract describing the accomplishments at your institution.

Click here to find out more information or to register for the conference.

The Last Word

AAMC CFAS News, September 26, 2014:

Trying to understand why people see Jesus in a piece of toast? Are you concerned that owning a cat is hazardous to your health? Do you wonder whether uncontrollable nosebleeds can be stopped through nasal packing with strips of cured pork? These research areas were honored last week at Harvard University with Ig Nobel Prizes in neuroscience, public health, and medicine, respectively. The annual award ceremony singles out research topics that "make people laugh, then make them think."
