Keeping in Touch - the ELUM online directory

Did you know that ELAM has a searchable online directory of ELUMs? Alumnae can log in to our secure site at www.icela.net to update contact and demographic information as well as to search for program graduates via the ICELA Community Web Portal.  Staff use this information to stay in touch and make sure that alumnae receive news from the community. We also compile aggregate data that shows the impact of the fellowship and the alumnae community, and publish it in our research and reports such as ELAM Fast Facts. Please contact us with questions about the portal at ELAM@Drexelmed.edu.

Quote of the Day

Have you learned lessons only of those who admired you, and were tender with you, and stood aside for you? Have you not learned great lessons from those who braced themselves against you, and disputed passage with you?

AAMC CFAS-News, July 25, 2014:

Women and men who have children born during the course of their surgical residency training are no more likely to drop out of that program than other residents, according to a study published in the journal JAMA Surgery. The study also looked specifically at pregnant women, reporting that of the 85 residents studied, 25 percent were women who had children during training and took an average maternity leave of 10 weeks. Only one dropped out of her program, and the majority finished on schedule.

A study published in PLOS ONE reveals that young female scientists are sexually harassed and even assaulted while conducting field work. In a survey of scientists engaged in field research, the majority-64 percent-said they had personally experienced sexual harassment while at a field site, and 22 percent reported being the victim of sexual assault. A total of 666 scientists, primarily in the fields of anthropology and archaeology, completed the voluntary Internet survey.

More Education for Wives No Longer Adds to Risk of Divorce

A new study in American Sociological Review finds a reversal of a pattern of many decades in which women with more education than their husbands were more likely than others to end up divorced. Now such women are not at greater odds of divorce.

Harmonizing Professional, Personal and Social Responsibility

There is an old Indian proverb: "There is nothing noble in being superior to some other man. The true nobility is in being superior to your previous self." India's proverbs and old sayings reveal many aspects about the cultural traditions of its society. The cultural tilt toward men as the dominant member of India's society-along with many other countries-allows social barriers to linger for many women who want to shift from the role of a homemaker and take on other responsibilities.

Five Thirty Eight, August 5, 2014:

In Science, It Matters That Women Come Last

People tell me that, as a female scientist, I need to stand up for myself if I want to succeed: Lean in, close the confidence gap, fight for tenure. Being a woman in science means knowing that the odds are both against you being there in the first place and against you staying there. Some of this is due to bias; women are less likely to be hired by science faculty, to be chosen for mathematical tasks and to have their papers deemed high quality. But there are also other barriers to success. Female scientists spend more time rearing children and work at institutions with fewer resources.

Forbes, August 8, 2014:

Five Alternatives To Saying "I Don't Know"

Nothing can fluster even the most unflappable professional like being asked a question to which they don't know the answer. Appearing incompetent or uninformed is one thing, but what makes this scenario even worse is when you're asked the 'impossible question' in a group setting. Maybe it's a group you know well-or maybe it's a group you're building early credibility with and hoping to impress. You're unsure of the details, you may feel a bit embarrassed, and you're not sure how to word a response. Rather than turning to "I don't know" as a default, prepare yourself with some more powerful responses.
