ELATE at Drexel Wins Prestigious Award
We are excited to announce that ELATE at Drexel® (ELAM's sister program) was the recipient of the 2014 Women in Engineering Initiative Award from the Women in Engineering Proactive Network (WEPAN). Diane Magrane accepted the award on June 11 at an awards ceremony at the WEPAN Change Leader Forum in Minneapolis, MN.

AAMC STAT, June 16, 2014:
AAMC Council of Deans Fellowship Program Names 2014-2015 Fellows The AAMC has named Allison Brashear, M.D., M.B.A. (ELAM '07), Wake Forest School of Medicine; Robert S.D. Higgins, M.D., MSHA, The Ohio State University College of Medicine; and D. Brent Polk, M.D., Keck School of Medicine of the University of Southern California as the 2014-2015 Council of Deans (COD) Fellows. Last year, the COD resumed its fellowship program for senior faculty, including department chairs and assistant and associate deans, to enhance the development of future leaders in academic medicine. Key program components include going on campus visits with two dean mentors, being introduced to the COD's strategic activities, participating in COD meetings and other professional development opportunities specific to deans, and completing a leadership project that addresses an important challenge at his or her institution.
Mary Coleman, M.D., Ph.D. (ELAM '03), has accepted the position of Department Head of Family Medicine at Louisiana State University School of Medicine in New Orleans effective July 1.
Jean S. Kutner, M.D., M.S.P.H. (ELAM '08) has been named the new chief medical officer of the University of Colorado Hospital and associate dean for clinical affairs of the CU School of Medicine.
Jennifer K. Lodge, Ph.D. (ELAM '14), has been appointed vice chancellor for research for Washington University.
Anne B. Newman, M.D., M.P.H. (ELAM '12), has been selected as the first Katherine M. Detre Endowed Chair of Population Health Science at the University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public Health.
Joan E. Nichols Ph.D. (ELAM '12), is the new Associate Dean for Student Affairs in the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences at the University of Texas University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston.
Etta Pisano, M.D. (ELAM '04) and Laura Schweitzer, Ph.D. (ELAM '99) were mentioned in a May 22, 2014 article in Newsweek, The Sunshine Act Will Publicize Big Pharma's Undue Influence on Doctors.

Terri Young, M.D. (ELAM '10), has been appointed chair of the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences at the University of Wisconsin (UW) School of Medicine and Public Health. Young currently is professor of ophthalmology, pediatrics, and medicine at Duke University. She will join UW in September.

In a recent post on AM Rounds, the blog of the journal Academic Medicine, Janet Bickel, a leadership and career development coach, offers "10 Tips for Men with Questions about How to Excel as Mentors of Women." Among other tips, Bickel counsels, "Internalizing limiting cultural messages, women tend to underestimate themselves. Be prepared to bolster a mentee's belief that she can set and achieve big goals."
AAMC STAT, June 9, 2014:
New Guide Available on Developing Diversity and Inclusion in Academic Medicine A new AAMC publication, produced by a multidisciplinary team of experts, provides a roadmap to help institutions comply with important diversity standards for accreditation by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education. These standards include specific language for medical education programs to use for policies and practices, as well as programs and partnerships to achieve diversity and inclusion goals. Part one of the guide provides nine essential tasks in a roadmap for diversity and inclusion strategic planning and offers key questions to help institutions think through each task. Part two identifies specific strategies that could be included in a plan to meet diversity and inclusion goals, tips for working with leadership, and the skills and competencies needed for diversity officers to succeed.

Applications are now being accepted for the AAMC Executive Development Seminar for Associate Deans and Department Chairs, being held Sept. 19-23 in Tempe, Ariz. The five-day seminar is designed to provide professionals in these roles within academic medicine with essential leadership and management skills needed to support their institutions' mission and goals. The application phase is open until July 23.
