Vimla Band, Ph.D. (ELAM '13), received an Outstanding Women Scientist Award from the American Association of Indian Scientists in Cancer Research (AAISCR) at the organization's meeting on April 7. This award is "given to women to honor those whose contributions to research have been outstanding and who have served as a role model for all women in cancer research."
Joanne Conroy, M.D. (ELAM '98) has been named the new CEO of Lahey Hospital & Medical Center in Boston.
Mary Anne Delaney, M.D. (ELAM '08), has been appointed as chair of the Department of Psychiatry at Drexel University College of Medicine effective July 1, 2014. Dr. Delaney has served with distinction as interim chair since May of 2013. She is a professor and former vice chair of the department.
Janice Herbert-Carter M.D., M.G.A. (ELAM '08), will be the new Chair of the Department of Medical Education at Morehouse School of Medicine starting July, 2014.
AAMC CFAS-News, April 17, 2014:
Jean A. King, Ph.D. (ELAM '12), has been appointed to the new position of associate provost for biomedical science research at the University of Massachusetts (UMass) Medical School, effective May 15. King is a UMass professor of psychiatry, as well as a former fellow of the Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine program for women.
Geneviève Moineau, M.D. (ELAM '08), President and Chief Executive Officer of the Association of Faculties of Medicine of Canada (AFMC) presented the 2014 AFMC May Cohen Equity, Diversity and Gender award to Janet de Groot, M.D. (ELAM '13) during the Canadian Conference on Medical Education (CCME) in Ottawa, Canada. The award recognizes outstanding effort or achievement of an individual, program, department or faculty in improving the equity, diversity, or gender environment over the past 5 years in academic medicine in Canada.
Ann-Christine Nyquist M.D., M.S.P.H. (ELAM '11), Associate Dean for Diversity and Inclusion and Professor of Pediatrics and Epidemiology at the University of Colorado School of Medicine, Medical Director of Infection Prevention and Control and Occupational Health at Children's Hospital Colorado, has been elected to the Pediatric Infectious Diseases Society Board of Directors for a 4-year term as member-at-large effective May 2014.
Lesley Regan, M.D. (ELAM '11), presented "Human Rights and Women's Health in the 21st Century" during the Samuel A. Cosgrove Memorial Lecture at the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.

Nominations are invited for the 2015 Frank H. Morriss, Jr. Leadership Award. This award is granted in honor of Dr. Frank H. Morriss, Jr., Professor and former Head, Department of Pediatrics, University of Iowa. The award recognizes sustained leadership in an academic setting that has resulted in improved health or well-being of children through innovation in clinical care, investigation of children's diseases and problems, advocacy on behalf of child health, or facilitation of collaborative efforts. The test of leadership shall be that one developed a new strategy, set a new course or direction, marshaled resources or people toward an effort, or found common ground among competing interests.
The award nominee should be a faculty member at an academic institution in the U.S. or elsewhere. The awardee will be expected to come to Iowa City and share the story of his or her leadership accomplishments. Previous award recipients are Duane F. Alexander, Thomas F. Boat, Edward B. The Last Word
AAMC CFAS-News, May 1, 2014:
Male researchers stress out rodents more than female researchers, according to a paper in Nature Methods. Such stress temporarily quashes pain response. And it's not just male Homo sapiens. Male guinea pigs, cats, and dogs also stressed out the rodents. "The findings should at least prompt researchers to report the gender of experimenters in their publications," said one author of the paper.
