ELAM News to Know

Looking Ahead to 25 Years

A report from GFA

Olivia Lee gives us a report from this past weekend's ELUM gathering at the Association of American Medical College's Group on Faculty Affairs annual meeting in Boston.

"ELAM is back from Boston and the AAMC Group on Faculty Affairs annual meeting. Diane, Roz, and I were pleased to host 27 ELUMs and one Fellow from the incoming 2015 class. We enjoyed each other's company while exploring questions about what we have gained from ELAM and how we can each take a more active role in leading the program and academic medicine forward in times of great uncertainty. ELAM is now 20 years old, and I am looking forward to our 25th Anniversary in 2020.

As always, we look to you to keep our community strong, and look forward to continuing this very important work!"

You can't let prasie or criticism get to you. It's a weakness to get caught up in either one.

A move to extend visiting hours at hospitals

The New York Times/New Old Age Blog, July 11, 2014 - Paula Span

A campaign has been launched by the nonprofit Institute of Patient-and Family-Centered Care, called Better Together, to persuade hospitals to eliminate restrictive visiting hours and permit families, broadly defined, to remain with loved ones throughout their stays, even in intensive care units. Sharon Inouye (ELAM '14), professor of medicine at Hebrew SeniorLife, is quoted.

Susan T. Mayne, Ph.D. (ELAM '09) was awarded the inaugural Excellence in Education Award from the Society for Epidemiologic Research in Seattle in June.

The American Institute for Research issued a brief, "Leaving STEM: STEM Ph.D. Holders in Non-STEM Careers," exploring the demographics of people who have Ph.D.-level training in STEM fields, yet leave that realm and work elsewhere. Generally, female Ph.D. holders are more likely to leave STEM careers than their male counterparts, and black Ph.D. holders are more likely than other racial groups to leave STEM careers. Additionally, about one of every six STEM Ph.D. holders works outside of a STEM field.

The Last Word

AAMC CFAS-News, July 10, 2014:

And finally, a study published in the journal Science last week reported shocking news from the world of the strong, silent type. Researchers at the University of Virginia found that people would rather feel physical pain over the pain of their private thoughts. When left alone specifically to think, many test participants preferred to expose themselves to a self-administered electrical shock rather than just sit there in thought. Men were far more likely to push the pain button than women. Fully 12 in 18 men in the study delivered a shock to themselves compared with 6 in 24 women.
