Wing of Zock, Blog: February 10, 2015
The Wing of Zock blog included a post, "Starting with Cells: Rethinking Science as a Place for Women," co-written by AAMC Chief Scientific Officer Ann Bonham, PhD (ELAM '02), and Diana Lautenberger, which explores persistent societal and cultural views leading to stereotypes faced by women in science. "This issue intersects and closely mirrors the importance of including women in clinical trials and recognizing sex as a biological variable as inherent to good science," the piece notes.

Inadequate Progress for Women in Academic Medicine: Findings from the National Faculty Study

Anita Raj, Ph.D., and Karen M. Freund, M.D., M.P.H. (ELAM '04)
A qualitative study was conducted in conjunction with a longitudinal study of 24 randomly selected medical schools. Just 20 percent of full-time faculty members in U.S. academic medicine are women, according to a study published in the Journal of Women's Health. While there has been some progress for females in academic medicine, results of the study indicate a lot still needs to change.
"Despite some progress in improving the climate for women in academic medicine, inequities persist that must be addressed," says Susan G. Kornstein, M.D. (ELAM '06), Editor-in-Chief of Journal of Women's Health, Executive Director of the Virginia Commonwealth University Institute for Women's Health, Richmond, VA, and President of the Academy of Women's Health.
