For those of you that haven't wanted to brave the heat on the course over the past couple of months, or haven't been here, the TVGC staff and committees have been busy.  The picture in the header shows you a wonderful fall day here and the progress of the "new" putting course.  Our staff took that course down to dirt and now all the new grass is coming in nicely.   Another grounds crew project was lowering the back tees on #7 Peaks.  In the photo below you can see we have new steps up to this tee box. In addition we have steps on a couple of other holes.

The Membership and Golf Committees have worked through the summer to produce a new Golfer's Guide that should be in print later this fall.  In doing so they cleaned up our Rules & Regulations that can now be found on ForeTees under that heading. Our Controller and Administrative Assistant, Tenna Dillon and Sherry Dee, have been working hard all summer on the project to convert our financial systems.  The end result later should bring TVGC more control and a much cleaner and more efficient financial operation resulting in more reliable, accurate statements for the members.    No one in Tonto Verde is taking the summer off!

From The President

The Board of Directors met by Webex conference call on September 5th.  The primary focus for discussion included a presentation on TVGC "Rules and Regulations" and our "Golfer's Guide".  After a robust two hour conversation both documents were approved by the Board with some changes.

Ken Holec, Membership Committee Chair, and Lynn Robinson, Golf Committee Chair, prepared well written and complete documents for Board review.  The final publication will be a Golfer's Guide that will be expanded in 2013-14 to include the Rules and Regulations.  These R&R's are basically the TVGC approved statements of expected behavior, etiquette and other general policies of which all golfers should be aware.  The Golfer's Guide should be available for Association opening events.

During the summer two key documents were negotiated between the TVA and TVGC.  These are the Putting Course and Desert Maintenance (PCDM) Agreement and the Letter of Understanding (formerly the Synergy Agreement).  In the past these were included in one document.  Both agreements have a three year term which should eliminate the need to annually spend a lot of time on negotiations.

Thanks to Jay Simons for helping prepare a more formal PCDM agreement.  The TVA will pay TVGC $155,000 per year to provide maintenance services for the eighteen hole putting green and a reasonably weed free desert zone.  Because of the dollars involved this agreement clearly spells out the obligations of both parties and allows for a pricing escalator over the contract life.

Notes From Your Pro

Greetings golf members! As the mercury slowly starts to drop, we're seeing more familiar faces return to Tonto Verde. We're hoping that those of you who are in town will sign up for the second annual End of Summer Challenge. It's a two-day event on September 25th and 26th (Wednesday and Thursday) starting at 8am. The format is an Individual Net Eclectic which means there is very little pressure and you will only be able to improve your score on the second day. Whether we use a shotgun start or tee times will be determined by the number of participants we have signed up by the middle of this week. Sign up on Foretees today!

Last Thursday the AWGA finally finished rating the ladies tees on the Ranch course. We should get the new ratings/slopes back within a week which will allow us to proceed with a new scorecard order. Starting October 1st, we officially enter shoulder season which means that guest rates will go up back up to $60 before 1pm and $50 (twilight) after. Also beginning in October the golf shop will be open 7 days a week 6:30am - 5:00pm. If you're a group leader who hasn't submitted a request form for the coming season, this is a final reminder that they're due in by the end of this month so we can finalize the group schedule (November - April). For groups who would like pre-booked times in October, we're handling those requests on a first-come first-serve basis.

Be sure to tune in to the PGA Tour Championship next week as the best players in the world square off for a ten million dollar prize. Until next time, keep em flying long and straight!

From The Course

Overseeding is on us! By the time this article goes to press, we'll be just one week away from shutting down the Peaks Course for scalping and overseeding.  Both golf courses currently have a lot of Bermuda which has us set up for another successful overseeding.

In order to have a successful overseeding, it is imperative that we have a good thick stand of Bermuda to provide a nice seed bed.  Unfortunately this summer, it has taken us most of the summer to establish that in some areas.  Next year we are aiming for a much smoother transition from Ryegrass to Bermuda, hopefully with a little more conducive weather, allowing this guy to sleep easier at night.

We welcome Peter Ferlicca as our new Assistant Superintendent.  Peter comes to us from Shady Canyon GC in Orange County, California.  Peter will assume duties on the Ranch Golf Course as of September 16.  Chris Soto has done an excellent job for the last two years on the Ranch, he has decided to switch courses this year and take on a new challenge with the Peaks Golf Course.  We wish them both well with their respective new challenges, I'm sure we will continue to provide our membership with two great golf courses this coming season.

I would like to wish everyone safe travels as they make their way back to Tonto this fall and look forward to seeing you all upon your return.

On behalf of the Golf Course Maintenance team,

Dean Hall

Golf Course Superintendent

From The MGA

My Fellow MGA Members:

As you begin thinking about the coming TVMGA season and your travel plans to Tonto Verde, please mark October 30 on your calendar.  That Wednesday is the official start of our fall/winter/spring golfing season.  I hope your schedule will allow you to join your fellow members that morning for our opening breakfast, which will be followed by an 18-hole shotgun event.  The breakfast will provide you with a good opportunity to reconnect with many of your Tonto Verde friends and golfing buddies, and is a great way to help kick off our season.

I also want to point out and encourage you to sign up for the "Fall Best Ball" competition.  Partner with another MGA member and compete against other teams in your flight in five matches.  Play is on Wednesdays (men's day), and competing in this event is a good way to garner points towards the season ending MGA Cup competition. (See MGA Cup Announcement in this issue for the details.)  If you would like to participate in this event and need help finding a partner, let the pro-shop staff know and they will be happy to pair you up with another member.

You MGA Board has been working throughout the off season with the objective of assuring all members a season of much fun, fellowship and friendly competition.  We hope to see you all on October 30 at 8:00 for breakfast and the start of what we a sure will be an enjoyable golfing season.

See you soon,

Russ Chance

TVMGA President

From Nine & Dine

We are the Tonto Verde Nine and Dine Women's Golf Association or NDA.  The NDA provides a fun, yet competitive, environment for women who choose to play only 9 holes of golf, while improving their game.  Supporting the concept of improving their game, the Rules and Etiquette Chair regularly shares information on new or modified PGA or Tonto Verde Golf Club rules.  Cash prizes are awarded at the end of the season placing emphasis on attendance, recognition of competitive event winners, pars, birdies, eagles, holes-in one, Interclub and Dream Scores.

As Fall approaches, the NDA Board members are looking forward to your safe return to Tonto Verde for our first 2013/2014 NDA event.   The "Welcome Back Wine and Cheese" is scheduled for Monday, November 4, 2013, 3:00 p.m., at Linda Carpenter's House.

If your name, email address or phone number was incorrect in the WGA/NDA /Lady Putters Directory last season, please email your corrections to NDA Vice President, Diane Kirk, dkirk@centurytel.net,

The NDA is looking forward to growing its Social Membership Program.   NDA Social memberships are available to women who have previously been a golf member of the NDA for at least one year.  This includes women who have since surrendered their Tonto Verde golf club membership.  This category of NDA membership allows women to participate in the NDA monthly business meetings and luncheons; and NDA events, outside of the golf portion.  NDA Social members sign up for NDA monthly business meetings and luncheons on ForeTees by selecting Club Events and registering under the Events tab.  The NDA Social Membership Form and dues are mailed to the NDA Treasurer. NDA Social Membership Annual Dues are:  $40.

A Celebration For The Ostlunds

Friday, September 13th, the women golfers at Tonto Verde hosted a shower for Jeff and Donnielle Ostlund to help them welcome baby (boy) Ostlund due October 24th.  Donnielle told us the doctor is not so sure it will go to term as the baby is already over 5 pounds, 2 pounds more than expected at this point!  The women collectively gave the Ostlunds a car seat and as you can see they presented many more gifts.  Soon to be papa Jeff commented that he would be enjoying the toys long before baby.  Rose Moore, Lynn Casebere and Chef Joe

organized a wonderful Pasta and Salad bar with Cannelloni for dessert.

The entire club owes Donnie a debt of gratitude for her "taking one for the team", being pregnant through the hot Arizona summer.   The Ostlund family should be settled back into their new routines by high season next year.

Summer Verdes Open

The "Summer Verdes Open" was held at Trappers Turn Golf Club in Wisconsin Dells, WI on August 20 and 21.  This event was started as the Wisconsin Open many years ago by Rio Verde residents who lived in Wisconsin in the summer.  In 1999, Tonto Verde members were included.  The event has moved around the state (one was held in Iowa) depending on who hosts the event. Over the years, present and past Tonto and Rio Verde members have gotten together during the summer to golf and dine.  In the past few years, Wisconsin participants have decreased to only about 50%, as word of the event has spread to members in the neighboring states (and some not quite neighboring).   This year we had 63 golfers and 70 diners from 10 different states.  The event normally includes a cocktail social the evening before, followed by lunch, golf tournament and dinner the following day. We have two beautiful days for golf and socializing.  Many people played another round of golf, either before or after the event.
