Greetings!
Welcome to Tonto! Our community Marketing Team placed two new signs on Forest Road east and west of the Tonto Verde Drive entrance so that all driving this way know we're here. Tonto Verde is very busy even in the 100°+ weather with new houses going up and our course maintenance crews at full speed. The recent rains have caused the purple sage to really explode with color and has also helped the golf course. Since we only have The Peaks course open right now, several men and women's groups travel around the area one day a week. All report that TVGC competes very well with the best in the valley including the Phoenician and TPC! Our Rio neighbors are enjoying the summer reciprocal program and several have told us they prefer Tonto.

 | From The President | The Board of Directors held its monthly meeting using Webex technology on August 1st. Although the summer agenda is lighter than normal, we still have good conversations about the club activities and stay in touch on important issues. A golf policy issue was discussed and approved. The Golf Committee recommends that all hazards be redefined in accordance with Arizona Golf Association rules. "Prepared Rock" rules influence this recommendation. Jeff Ostlund, Head Golf Professional, will fully communicate these changes to the membership. This month our auditors, McGladrey & Co., are performing a balance sheet audit on our books and records as of June 30, 2013. An audit will help insure that we are properly accounting for transactions, establishing a system of internal controls and acting as stewards of our membership funds. In February of 2012 the Board approved a policy regarding weddings on golf course property. Basically the policy states no weddings on tees or greens, no cost to the TVGC and a $500 fee. The Tonto Verde Association has asked for our help to provide space for a wedding on October 19th. Because the TVA has redone the putting course and delayed a decision as to an event space, we have cooperated in a "one community" spirit to offer assistance. In accordance with the policy we have agreed to permit the east-end of the south practice range to be used for a short ceremony at 4:30 pm. Dean Hall is fully on board with this arrangement and it will not cause any problems with overseed. The TVGC does not plan to enter the wedding business, but has offered help to the TVA as a one-time accommodation. Scott Thiss

 | Notes From Your Pro |
Greetings golf members. If you've checked the ForeTees home page lately, you'll notice that a printable golf calendar and golf course maintenance schedule are now available. We will continue to use the ForeTees home page along with this newsletter and email to keep you abreast of all things golf at Tonto Verde. I'd like to thank all of you who shared their feedback in our recent member satisfaction survey. We're using the results to direct our focus on enhancing the aspects of the member experience that you most desire to be improved.
Scott Thiss mentioned in his article that the Golf Committee made a final decision regarding the hazard markings on both golf courses. Going forward, the only hazards that will be marked on the courses are those that actually contain water on a regular basis with two exceptions. The cross-fairway washes on holes 8 and 9 of the Ranch will remain marked as yellow hazards for pace of play reasons. The sheer quantity of rock in those two transitions justifies these markings. We don't want golfers delaying play while searching for balls in these often-frequented areas that are difficult to navigate. This course marking decision has been made in accordance with the Arizona Golf Association guidelines.
Regardless of handicap, when a golfer plays our courses its not unlikely that their ball may at some point venture off the grass and come to rest against some rocks. It's important to understand what constitutes "prepared rock" because it is considered an immovable obstruction under our local rules. We further define the term as inlaid, ornamental or structural rock formations. If your stance or intended swing path is affected by "prepared rock" you may take free relief by dropping your ball within one club length of your nearest point of relief (no nearer the hole). We will continue working to educate the membership on this concept as we head into the new season so golfers understand how to consistently interpret and apply the aforementioned rule.
Although we're still waiting for the AWGA to finish rating the ladies tees on the Ranch, we have received the new ratings/slopes for the ladies tees on the Peaks. They are as follows:
CURRENT NEW
Red 70.1/119 Red 71.2/124
Combo 68.8/115 Combo 69.5/118
Gold 67.2/106 Gold 68.3/114
The new ratings and slopes will be activated once we introduce new scorecards. As I conclude this edition of "Notes from Your Pro", I'd like to give a shout out to all the Tonto Verde ladies that will be attending the Solheim Cup at Colorado Golf Club this weekend. Have a great time and GO USA! Until next time, keep em' flying long and straight!

 | From The Course | It's been a long summer here for us on the Maintenance crew, but the end is in sight! As I sit here and prepare this report, it's a little scary to think we are only 40 days away from overseeding!! We are currently in the process of catching up on mowing on the Ranch course, following aerification and topdressing, in preparation for reopening next Monday, August 19. We have one more two week closure on the Peaks course in which we will aerify greens, tees and fairways and select rough areas one more time as well as get some cart path repair, sod work and bunker improvements done. We put down quite a bit of sod last week on the Ranch course, repairing some cart path edges, entry/exit areas, etc. We plan on completing more of this during our last Ranch closure (Sep. 2-22). For those that don't know, this year we are reversing the overseed schedule. The Peaks course will be overseeded first from September 23 - October 17, the Ranch course will follow, October 14 - November 3. I'd like to extend a big THANK YOU to all who contributed to the "Carpet Open" fund this summer. This year we were able to purchase new tables and chairs for our employee lunch room, a new oven/stove, a refrigerator, new toilet stalls and men's urinals, an outdoor furniture set for our designated smoking area and funds also covered a recent staff Carne Asada down at the Ranch which included our Employee of the Year award. Congratulations go out to Ismael Bastidos who was voted Employee of the Month for July. Ismael received a $50 gift card with his certificate. Ismael is a relatively new employee and has quickly earned the respect of his peers through his fabulous work ethic and eagerness to learn. A big congratulations to Aurelio Rosales. Aurelio was voted Employee of the Month for June and also voted Employee of the Year for 2012/13! Aurelio has been at Tonto Verde for 8 years now and is a tireless worker who is always giving 120% without complaint. Aurelio can be seen trimming trees and shrubs day in day out as an integral part of our Desert Maintenance crew. TVGC Vice President, Susan Warzecka was on hand to present Aurelio with his award. Aurelio received $300 cash for his efforts! Muchas Gracias Aurelio!! Susan, Aurelio and Dean Employees enjoying their new tables and chairs! | Long Range Planning Committee |
The Master Plan effort continues to progress.....the conceptual drawings have been completed by our architect, Mike Gogel, and distributed to the Master Plan Task Force members. They will meet a couple of times in August to discuss and refine the concepts before Mike proceeds toward finalization. After the Task Force reaches agreement, Mike will then proceed with the final drawings, color renderings, and pricing. The Long Range Planning Committee will then review and add recommended prioritization before the Task Force goes to the Board for their review / approval before presenting the plan to the membership for their input. It is expected that the Master Plan process will be completed by February 2014.
