Are You at Risk for Diabetes?
American Diabetes Month is each November and a perfect time to come together as a community to stop diabetes. Nearly 30 million Americans live with diabetes, and another 86 million Americans are prediabetic.
Research shows that you can lower your risk for type 2 diabetes by 58% by:
 | Losing 7% of your body weight (or 15 pounds if you weigh 200 pounds) | | Exercising moderately (such as brisk walking) 30 minutes a day, five days a week |
Don't worry if you can't get to your ideal body weight. Losing even 10 to 15 pounds can make a huge difference.

Bon Secours is a Diabetes Association Health Champion
In October, the American Diabetes Association awarded Bon Secours Virginia its prestigious Health Champion Designation. Bon Secours is among an exclusive group of 103 organizations to represent the ADA's first class of Health Champions.
To become a Health Champion, organizations must meet healthy living criteria in three areas:
 | Nutrition and weight management | | Physical activity | | Organizational well-being |
| Wellness Manager Meghan Melvin received the award for Richmond. |
|
| Wellness Manager Amy Cutter (on right) accepted the award for Hampton Roads. |

Diabetes Forecast, ADA's national magazine, will recognize Bon Secours in its January/February issue.

Mindful Eating
Building Resiliency Through Your Relationships with Food
"Building Resiliency Through Your Relationships with Food," an EAP webinar
|
In its simplest form, Mindful Eating is paying attention to what you put in your mouth. It is listening to the advice our mothers gave us: "Slow down. Sit at the table. Give thanks. Enjoy your meal."
Studies have shown that when we eat while multitasking and rush through meals, we are more likely to eat in excess and stray from our meal plans. However, research participants who practiced mindful eating ate less, made better food choices and reported higher satisfaction levels with their meals.
What's so Great about Mindful Eating?
Hear from EAP Counselor Claudia Ryan and Employee Wellness Analyst and SimplyFresh Liaison Ira Korshin about what it means to eat mindfully. And learn how our SimplyFresh program supports this approach.

Keep Track for Maintain, Don't Gain
If you signed up for Maintain, Don't Gain, you've just begun to enjoy the resources emailed to you for the next eight weeks. One of the lessons is on tracking your food each day. Whether or not you're doing this challenge, you can log your food on BonSecoursWellness.com. Just writing down what goes into your mouth can have a significant impact on your choices.
Did You Know?
Those who write down their food choices six days a week lose twice as much weight as those who only do so once a week or not at all.

Thank You, Shed to Share Participants
This summer Bon Secours employees across Virginia took part in the Shed to Share Challenge. During the 14 weeks, employees recorded more than 766 pounds lost.
This weight loss benefitted more than just the employees. For each pound lost, Employee Wellness made a monetary donation to Catholic Charities of Virginia. Due to the hard work and determination of employees, the local Catholic Charities chapters in Hampton Roads and Richmond can expect a $6,047 donation.
"We were so excited that Bon Secours' employees chose to support Catholic Charities! The money raised for our organization makes a huge impact --- your donation could provide the equivalent of a month's worth of diapers for 50 families, or pay the utility bills for 10 families in need, or even enable us to care for one developmentally disabled adult for an entire year! Many, many thanks to all those who sacrificed to support our work. We truly appreciate your commitment!"
--- Tracy Fick, director of development and marketing of Catholic Charities of Eastern Virginia
