| Honoring Our Nation's Finest Through community outreach and employee programs, Bon Secours Virginia is a proud supporter of the U.S. military. Below is a snapshot of what we do and how our employees are supported. "At Bon Secours, we hire veterans and service men and women," said Jan Malone, staff accountant/bursar, Bon Secours Memorial College of Nursing & School of Medical Imaging. "We have a committee that specializes in the military, celebrates the patriotic holidays and supports veterans in our community. This lets us know that Bon Secours appreciates us. "I wanted to join the committee because I wanted to show my appreciation to those veterans who've done a whole lot more than I did," said Malone, Sergeant, U.S. Army Reserves, 1990-1998. "I'm so glad Bon Secours has a committee that uses the views and values of our service men and women. You don't find that at every company." | |
"It's a great feeling to give back a little bit to the people who protected us and put their lives on the line for us," said Linda Harris, outpatient scheduling coordinator.
Harris is a community outreach coordinator for Bon Secours Virginia's Stars & Stripes Employee Resource Group, which gives employees with a military connection or passion a place to connect and serve together.
The group volunteers one weekend a month at the Sitter & Barfoot Veterans Care Center and holds drives for the Richmond Fisher House, which supports veteran's families while they receive treatment at the Hunter Holmes McGuire VA Medical Center.
"There's a work ethic that goes with being in the military. We're all part of the bigger picture," said Dave Volk. "That fits Bon Secours, too, because we're all part of a faith system, and we work the system together."
The commonalities made for a smooth transition in 2005, when Volk, a Navy veteran and certified registered nurse anesthetist (CRNA), joined Bon Secours. Volk retired from the military after almost 13 years on active duty and 7½ years as a Reservist. He became director of anesthesia services at DePaul Medical Center in 2008. He earned a Doctor of Nursing Practice in 2013 while working and attending school full time, and maintaining a busy home life with his wife and now 16-year-old twins. "I really appreciate that Bon Secours encourages spending time with your family," he said.

New Service Lines Align Care
Everyone knows that the U.S. health care landscape is changing rapidly. And Bon Secours is evolving, too.
To better align with consumer preferences and today's health care focus on populations, health and wellness, quality, continuum of care and accessibility, our health system is changing its service line model.
Bon Secours Virginia has launched a service line structure based on clinical transformation, value creation, population health and innovative partnership models with payers, physicians, other health systems and community partners. In the new model, an administrative lead and a physician lead will partner collaboratively in each service line.
"The service lines align with our overall Strategic Quality Plan," said Leigh Sewell, vice president for service line strategy. "This new structure positions Bon Secours Virginia to successfully drive high quality outcomes across the continuum, while building strong clinical programs that meet the dynamic needs of our patient population." The SQP includes goals to Co-Create Healthy Communities, Be Person-Centric, Serve Those Who Are Vulnerable, and Strengthen our Culture and Capabilities.
Our service lines look forward to collaborating across the continuum, and we encourage the organization to partner with the service line leaders to work together to deliver outstanding patient care.

Radiation Dosimetrist Honored at Cancer Summit
Kathy L. Brooks, R.T.T, radiation dosimetrist and manager for the Radiation Therapy Department within the Bon Secours DePaul Cancer Institute, received the 2015 All Hope Cancer Award at the Bon Secours Cancer Summit in October.
Brooks was nominated for the award by Karen Stowe, a harpist at the Bon Secours DePaul Cancer Institute, after Stowe witnessed Brooks personally paying for a patient's medications.
Brooks notes that her actions are not unusual, and that everyone in her department goes above and beyond to help their patients. Her fellow employees have purchased groceries and medications for patients, and they also volunteer in the community and work closely with Lee's Friends, an organization that provides emotional support to cancer patients and their families.
