Education Opens Doors to Success October is National Work & Family Month. At Bon Secours, we strive to support our employees and their families. Not only is it the right thing to do, it also helps us as a health system be our best. Bon Secours strongly believes that education opens a world of opportunities. Whether you want to hone your workplace skills through our School at Work program or pursue leadership opportunities through STRIDE, we have courses annually. If you're interested in developing specific skills or learning more about our health system, check out helpful offerings in the Bon Secours Institute. We also offer tuition reimbursement for degrees you pursue at the Bon Secours Memorial College of Nursing and other accredited degree programs. Our Family Centers offer evening and Saturday hours for child care, and with Bon Secours' flexible work schedules and PTO options, you can fit in continuing education around your job, family and other obligations. Check with your supervisor to see how you can make it happen. We're committed to your advancement and also to offering your children great opportunities. They can get a great start in our Family Centers, programs, summer camps and more. And when they're ready to leave home, Bon Secours offers college scholarship opportunities to employees' children and grandchildren. Each year, Bon Secours Virginia awards more than $30,000 in college scholarships to employees' children and grandchildren. So take some time this month to think about how you can further your knowledge and challenge yourself. Bon Secours Virginia is here to help! |

Bon Secours Hampton Roads Facilities Earn Accreditation Extensions
The American College of Radiology recently extended the accreditation of the nuclear medicine department of Bon Secours Mary Immaculate Hospital through September 2018.
The accreditation follows a rigorous peer-review evaluation process, during which the American College of Radiology assesses several factors --- including image quality, staff qualifications, equipment adequacy, quality control procedures, and quality assurance programs.
Also, the Intersocietal Accreditation Commission recently announced three-year reaccreditations in vascular testing in the areas of extracranial cerebrovascular testing, peripheral venous testing and peripheral arterial testing for the noninvasive vascular laboratories at the Maryview Medical Center and the Bon Secours Health Center at Harbour View.
IAC accreditation is a "seal of approval" that patients can rely on as an indication that the facility has undergone a thorough review.

Take Control of Your Health
Mary Immaculate Hospital again will offer the HEAL Program, a health education and literacy program designed to combat the issue of low health literacy among people in the community, beginning Oct. 20.
Adult learners learn how to describe symptoms to a doctor, read and understand medical instructions, and to know when to use urgent care versus the emergency department.

Authentication Process Improves IS Security
In response to the recent increase in security threats and hacking attempts around the world, Bon Secours Health System has implemented a two-factor authentication process to help secure remote access to its information system (IS) resources. Those who access Bon Secours IS resources outside of a Bon Secours facility are affected by this change.
Two-factor authentication is an extra layer of security that requires not only a username and password but also a dynamic (changing) 6-digit code, which makes it harder for potential intruders to gain unauthorized access.
Contact CultureofSecurity@bshsi.org should you have questions or concerns.

October is American Pharmacists Month
Your Pharmacist: An Important Member of Your Health Care Team
Most people are aware that a pharmacist is the person who dispenses their prescription. However, pharmacists, as members of our health care team, also perform many functions that may not be so obvious, says Mark DeAngelo, pharmacy director at DePaul Medical Center.
DeAngelo notes that behind-the-scenes functions include:
 | making timely alternative medication recommendations during drug shortages or recalls | | monitoring all of a patient's prescriptions that are often written by several different providers for potential drug interactions | | serving as a form of triage for the 80 percent of U.S. adults who initially prefer to self-treat minor ailments with over-the-counter products |
Finally, he said, Bon Secours pharmacists perform one more important function. All of our hospitals have implemented a "Bedside Rx" program, so patients can have their prescriptions filled and delivered to their hospital room prior to discharge.
This program, he notes, has two primary goals:
 | to increase patient satisfaction by making the transition to home easier for the patient | | to decrease readmissions by ensuring that our patients leave our hospitals with the necessary medications for a successful recovery at home |
