Help Our Own Employees During
the Holidays via Values in Action

Every family should have a happy holiday season, but sometimes, unforeseen circumstances make it difficult. Unemployment, illness or unexpected emergencies can strain a family's finances.

Bon Secours Virginia's Values in Action program brings employees who are struggling during the holiday season together with employees who want to give help. This annual, confidential program helps employee families in Richmond and Hampton Roads enjoy a more special Christmas.

"I am really lucky to see how we help families via the program," said Avis Gates of the Bon Secours Family Centers. "Their tears, their hugs and their joy are all so genuine. And, it's all because of the generosity of the sponsoring departments across Bon Secours Virginia."

anchor1Modern Healthcare Best Places to Work 2015

Modern Healthcare has again named Bon Secours Virginia Health System as one of the 2015 Best Places to Work in Healthcare.

Bon Secours is the sole health care provider in Virginia to earn the distinction. The numerical rankings of the 100 companies will be announced live at an awards gala on Oct. 14 in Nashville, Tenn.

In its eighth year, the award program identifies and recognizes outstanding employers in the health care industry on a national level. Modern Healthcare partners with the Best Companies Group on the assessment process, which includes an extensive employee survey.

"Employee engagement is key to making the transition from volume to value-based care in today's fast-changing health care environment," said Merrill Goozner, editor of Modern Healthcare. "Companies designated as best places to work have discovered the key to gaining and maintaining that engagement."

anchor2October 4-10 Is
National Midwifery Week

National Midwifery Week highlights 80 years of midwifery care in the United States. Since 1996, the World Health organization has called for eliminating unnecessary intervention in childbirth, yet the norm in the U.S. today is the use of interventions not proven to benefit healthy women and babies.

"Midwives are the experts in supporting women in normal, healthy childbirth, which is the norm internationally," said Neldara Dowell, CNM at DePaul Medical Center's Midwifery Center, which opened in 1999 to support normal pregnancy and birth. Read more.

Depression Know the Truth
The most critical step in overcoming depression is recognizing it. For many people, the truth of what they are enduring is obscured by the myths and misunderstandings about depression.
October is Depression Awareness Month ---  it's important to remember that this disease affects one in 10 people.
Watch this video by the World Health Organization explaining how depression can feel like a "black dog" that follows you around and impacts your life.
If you recognize this "black dog" in your life, know that just like in the video, you don't have to live under the weight of depression. This disease is highly treatable. In support of your emotional well-being, take the first step and visit your physician or call your Employee Assistance Program 24/7:
Richmond: 804-342-1501 or 844-371-6767
Hampton Roads: 757-398-2374 or 800-327-3257
True or Fiction?
We ALL get depressed sometimes.
FICTION. Although it's normal to feel stress, sadness and grief at times in our lives, depression is a medical illness. Symptoms may be similar to stress and sadness, but they last longer, are more severe and interfere with day-to-day living. There is more than one type of depression and symptoms are not the same for everyone.
