ICD-10 Begins Oct. 1
On Oct. 1, after years of training and preparations, Bon Secours Health System and health systems across the country will adopt ICD-10. The ICD-10 code changes affect all Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act-covered entities --- hundreds of thousands of providers, payers and claims handlers.
|
Bon Secours physicians and staff have been reviewing ICD-10 training materials to prepare for a smooth transition.
|
Consider:
 | ICD-10 is a much more complex and detailed coding system than ICD-9, which has been used since the 1970s. | | For providers, there are about 68,000 diagnostic codes under the new ICD-10 codes --- five times more than under ICD-9. | | There's a more complex matrix of 87,000 new codes for hospital-based procedures in the ICD-10, 29 times more codes than in ICD-9. |
"I hope that all employees will support our coders, providers and others who must transition to this new system," said Dr. Mark Bladergroen, cardiac surgeon and CMIO for Bon Secours Virginia, who has championed preparedness efforts in our health system.
In addition to training for many months, local project teams have met frequently to ensure a smooth go-live.
If you have questions before Oct. 1, contact Lee Murray (Richmond) or Mary Donovan (Hampton Roads) or CDMP/coding. For assistance Oct. 1-9, contact the Go-Live Help Lines at:

WCVE-FM radio spotlighted Bon Secours Virginia and its inclusion of older workers in this recent radio story. Jim Godwin, vice president of Human Resources, who recently testified before a U.S. Senate Special Committee about this important topic, said, "Flexibility is the key. It's about removing barriers that keep older workers from staying in the workforce."

Again this year, Bon Secours Health System is requiring that all employees, credentialed medical staff, volunteers and others who work in one of our patient care facilities (including students over the age of 18, contractors and vendors who work for, provide services to or otherwise do business with Bon Secours Health System) receive the seasonal influenza vaccination. Specified individuals (employees, board members and credentialed medical staff) who choose not to get the flu vaccination MUST wear a surgical mask for the duration of the flu season when working at any Bon Secours patient care facility. Proof of receiving the flu vaccination must be completed and submitted to Employee Wellness by Nov. 1. |

"During Breast Cancer Awareness month, we are able to bring awareness and education to a disease that is the second leading cause of cancer death in U.S. women. It is more than wearing pink and pink ribbons; it allows us the opportunity to expose lifesaving prevention techniques such as mammograms and early detection."
