It's Not Too Early to Plan for College

You just sent your little ones back to school, but it's not too soon to think about their future education.

Is your child or grandchild heading to college in a few years? The Bon Secours Family Centers can help you prepare, with free informative workshops coming soon to Richmond and Hampton Roads.

According to the College Board, the average cost of tuition and fees for the 2014-2015 school year was $31,231 at private colleges, $9,139 for state residents at public colleges and $22,958 for out-of-state residents attending public universities.

Avis Gates"The College Planning workshop is one of the most informative workshops we offer for our employees and their families. Our speaker helps everyone develop an understanding of what is required for the application process; forms, deadlines, contacts. The differences between in-state and out of state, universities verses colleges, state supported as opposed to private schools, and so much more is explained. Most importantly, he helps with finding scholarships. Everyone should come and bring a friend."

A retired orthopaedic surgeon and former Chair of the Bon Secours Health System Board of Directors, Seitz has found cycling to be a sport that he can do well into his 70s ---  and hopefully beyond.

Take Control of Your Health

Mary Immaculate Hospital is introducing the HEAL Program, a health education and literacy program designed to combat the issue of low health literacy among people in the community.

Adults learn how to describe symptoms to a doctor, read and understand medical instructions, and to know when to use urgent care versus the emergency department.

"This type of program, offered to the public free of charge, is a tremendous service to the community," wrote the Daily Press in an editorial.

Bon Secours Health System works closely with local agencies to address issues of homelessness and economic hardship in the communities it serves. This commitment extends to employees as well through Bon Secours Health System Employee Hardship Grants, available to address the needs of eligible Bon Secours employees.

These grants could assist a co-worker facing a challenge in paying his or her rent, utilities, child care or health care; to help someone struggling in response to unanticipated auto or home repairs; or to assist someone who has lost his or her home in a fire or some other unexpected event.

The employee grants are needs-based, and are administered at the local system level. Click here for information on how to apply.
