Earning $900 in Wellness Incentives is Easier Than You Think
One 30-minute walk a day. Two Daily Challenges a week. One health screening. One 20-minute wellness profile completed online. That's all it takes to earn three Wellness Incentives worth $900.
More than three quarters of Bon Secours employees covered by a BSHSI Medical Plan completed at least one Wellness Incentive last year. You can, too, in the new Plan Year that runs Sept. 1, 2015-Aug. 31, 2016.
Betty Wesley is one of those employees. Wesley, lead agent, Medical Call Center Telecom, at Bon Secours St. Francis Medical Center, says, "This is not about appearance or trying to impress people, but it's about how I feel every day. I feel better." Now 68, Wesley has lost more than 50 pounds and has seen significant improvement in her blood pressure since becoming part of Bon Secours' Wellness program.

'She Leads By Example'
Elizabeth "Diane" Carl energizes her department through her own wellness journey.
"Since we started the online wellness at Mary Immaculate, I've been the one everyone goes to for website training," she said. "A few years back I had ulcers and had to learn how to take care of myself again. It was an eye-opening experience."
Carl is the wellness committee chair in Central Sterile Processing, and it just seems natural to share the daily challenge with about 20 colleagues split between two shifts.
"We read the challenge together and apply it to life that day or in the future," she said. "I've been trying to eat healthy, take care of myself with the Incentives and I try to stay on top of them to get their Incentives, also."
Half of the staff did phone coaching, and Carl made sure she helped everyone with that.
"She motivates all her co-workers by telling them what they will have in the end, and by helping them get there," said Sharon Snead, who nominated Carl for a wellness award. "She leads by example."
Carl says that the sharing builds teamwork and camaraderie in the department that ranges from those in their first job to employees with 30+ years of experience.
"And we get our 10,000 steps-plus here a day because we never sit down."

A Note of Thanks

Question: I'm trying to start eating healthy but it seems like such a daunting task. What's a small step that can have a huge effect on my diet and on the scale?
Answer: Congratulations on taking the first step to changing your life! We often get overwhelmed when we decide to change something and wonder where we should begin. A small goal to set is to monitor your water intake.
Start by only drinking water for a day or for every ounce of anything else you consume, drink the same amount of water following it. Work your way up to 8-10 glasses a day.
This little step adds up. For example, let's say you start your day with a medium café' latte (16 oz.) from your local coffee shop (265 calories), then you have a 20 oz. bottle of cola with your lunch (227 calories), stop off at the vending machine for a late afternoon break and get a 16 oz. sweet tea from the vending machine (180 calories), and end the day with a 12 oz. glass of fruit punch with dinner (192 calories). That's 864 calories --- more than is in a Big Mac and small fries combined!
So let's choose water. Drink up.
