Camps Prepare the Next Generation of Caregivers
While many kids are just chilling out by the pool, a handful of students interested in pursuing careers in medicine are conducting surgery on Jell-O brains and learning about CPR at our Nursing Explorers Camps. Last week, our hospitals in Hampton Roads hosted campers; this week, camps in Richmond are under way.
"Nurse Explorer's Camp is such an incredible opportunity for Bon Secours to expose young people to the many facets of the medical community. The ages served by the camps (rising 6th grade to 8th grade students) is intentional. This period of a child's development is particularly suited to begin thinking about their career interests and having hands on, behind the scenes types of experiences. Through our camps, they get to experience what it may be like and learn about what is required to do some of the many jobs within a hospital facility."
--- Samara Musselman Administrative Director Bon Secours Virginia Family Centers
|
The first camp began in 2006 at Memorial Regional. Since then, the camps have expanded to all the Bon Secours Virginia hospitals. In addition to employees' children, the camps now serve more community children who otherwise may not have a camp experience. With grants from the Virginia Hospital & Healthcare Association, Bon Secours' Office of Cross-Cultural Services and Bon Secours Virginia, the camps have thrived and continue to meet the community's growing needs. |

Complete Your ICD-10 Training by Aug. 1
"A lot of people think coding is just about the bill and how we get paid. But it's so much more than that. The statistics pulled from coding drive so many quality measures --- improving patient care, health care studies to improve treatment, research, metrics all across the board. With ICD-10, it will be a better system for patients, and therefore better healthcare delivery, as it paints a specific picture of patients from time they walk into the door until they're discharged."
--- Melissa Koehler Coding Manager, Bon Secours Hampton Roads |
Nearly every employee will be affected by ICD-10, a new system for diagnosis and procedure documentation. Bon Secours sees this as an opportunity to tell each patient's story in even greater detail. The transition to ICD-10 is set for Oct. 1.
The Bon Secours ICD-10 Training Team has developed training for nearly every employee. Most of the assignments for the health system office consist of a high-level overview of ICD-10 for general awareness and understanding. The training for HSO staff is now available in HealthStream. Please take the time to check your HealthStream assignments and plan to complete any assigned ICD-10 training by Aug. 1. Questions? Contact Lee Murray in Richmond or Mary Donovan in Hampton Roads.
