Declines in Teen Pregnancy Risk
Entirely Driven by Improved Contraceptive Use

Improvements in contraceptive use have led to a drop in the risk of pregnancy among U.S. adolescents aged 15-19-and these changes also appear to be driving the recent declines in teen pregnancy rates, abortion rates and birthrates. A new analysis titled "Understanding the Decline in Adolescent Fertility in the United States, 2007-2012," by Dr. Laura Lindberg and colleagues, estimated that improved contraceptive use accounted for the entire 28% decline in teen pregnancy risk between 2007 and 2012. The authors found significant increases in teens' use of any contraceptive method, use of multiple methods and use of highly effective methods, as well as a decline in contraceptive nonuse.

 Zika in the News
All U.S. Blood Donations Should Be Screened For Zika, FDA Says
The Food and Drug Administration is recommending that blood banks screen all blood donations in the U.S. for the Zika virus.

It's a major expansion from a Feb. 16 advisory that limited such screening to areas with active Zika virus transmission.

In a statement released Friday, the FDA says all those areas are currently in compliance with blood screening, but that expanded testing is now needed.

"As new scientific and epidemiological information regarding Zika virus has become available, it's clear that additional precautionary measures are necessary," the FDA's acting chief scientist, Luciana Borio, said in the statement.

Report spotlights new findings on reproductive health needs of HIV-infected teens

High-quality, individualized reproductive health care is especially important for adolescents and young adults with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) to prevent unintended pregnancies, sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and secondary transmission of HIV to partners and children.

Counseling also is critical because several antiretroviral (ARV) drugs used in recommended regimens interact with some hormonal contraceptives, which may limit the contraceptives' efficacy.
