"Listen to the MUSTN'TS, child,
Listen to the DON'TS
Listen to the SHOULDN'TS
The IMPOSSIBLES, the WON'TS
Listen to the NEVER HAVES
Then listen close to me-
Anything can happen, child,
Anything can be."

U.S. MEC and U.S. SPR Updates on Contraceptive Use
U.S. Medical Eligibility Criteria for Contraceptive Use, 2016
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recently released a new Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report: U.S. Medical Eligibility Criteria for Contraceptive Use (U.S. MEC), 2016. The 2016 U.S. MEC comprises recommendations for the use of specific contraceptive methods by women and men who have certain characteristics or medical conditions. Some notable updates since the 2010 U.S. MEC include the addition of new recommendations regarding the use of contraceptive methods by women with:
  • Cystic fibrosis
  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Women receiving certain psychotropic drugs or St. John's wort
U.S. Selected Practice Recommendations for Contraceptive Use, 2016
The CDC recently released a new Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report: The 2016 U.S. Selected Practice Recommendations for Contraceptive Use (U.S. SPR). The U.S. SPR addresses common issues regarding initiation and use of specific contraceptive methods. The information in this report updates the 2013 U.S. SPR. Some of the major updates include the following:
  • Revisions to the recommendations for starting regular contraception after the use of emergency contraceptive pills
  • New recommendations for the use of medications to ease insertion of intrauterine devices

MPRACOG: Immediate Postpartum LARC Should Be Incorporated into Practice
Obstetrician-gynecologists should counsel pregnant women about use of long-acting reversible contraception (LARC), such as implants and intrauterine devices (IUDs), immediately after they give birth, according to an American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) Committee Opinion published in the August issue of Obstetrics & Gynecology.

Bedsier App Reminder for Birth Control
There's an App for That.
Our Bedsider program has launched a new app to help women remember when to take their birth control. Research indicates that one of the primary reasons some methods of birth control fail is because women are forgetting to use and/or replace their methods in a timely fashion. This free app is designed for some of the most common methods of birth control: the pill, patch, ring, or shot. Research has shown that taking these forms of birth control on time ensures optimum effectiveness in preventing unplanned pregnancy.

"Our reminders are very popular because they don't just act like a boring alarm clock that's easy to ignore," said Ginny Ehrlich, CEO of The National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy. "We feature unique and entertaining content every day that's conveniently delivered where and when women are. Now that we're offering reminders via an app, they are even more reliable and accessible. Reminders can be downloaded anywhere Wi-Fi is available and be used for a month without a data connection."

The app is available in the iTunes and Android stores.
