Adolescents, Teens and Sex
Adolescents, Teens and Sex

Keeping close tabs on adolescents helps reduce risky sexual behavior, according to a new study.

Researchers say parental monitoring in general delays initiation of sexual intercourse and increases condom and contraceptive use.

They analyzed studies published between 1984 and 2014 looking at two different monitoring styles... knowledge and enforcement. Knowledge includes being aware of a child's companions, whereabouts and activities.... and enforcement deals with family rules about friends, dating and unsupervised time.

Both forms of involvement were effective in reducing risky sexual behavior in younger and older adolescents... and in boys and girls.

The study authors say healthcare providers are uniquely positioned to convey this message to parents and should provide them with targeted resources addressing key issues in adolescent sexual and reproductive health.
