Women in the Military Will Now Receive Contraceptive Counseling

Last week, President Obama signed the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2016 into law, and it included a requirement that health providers of the Department of Defense give women in the military counseling on contraceptive methods. The provision of the bill was introduced by Sen. Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) and Rep. Jackie Speier (D-CA), and it received bipartisan support.

2016 National Birth Defects Prevention Month - RESOURCE PACKET

The January 2016 National Birth Defects Prevention Month packet is now available Here (entire packet can be downloaded Here

The theme is "Making Healthy Choices to Prevent Birth Defects - Make a PACT for Prevention."
P - Plan ahead
A - Avoid harmful substances
C - Choose a healthy lifestyle
T - Talk to your doctor

This packet was developed in collaboration with many partners, including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), Teratology Society (TS), and state birth defects programs. There are several NEW resources, e.g., a handout on "paternal contribution to a developing baby's health" and a social media toolkit (appendix 1). The toolkit has suggestions for how you can use social media to raise awareness about #1in33 and join the conversation about birth defects prevention using #LivingMyPACT. We invite you to tailor the resources and share with colleagues, policy makers, families, and others during National Birth Defects Prevention Month in January 2016 and throughout the year.

We ask that you provide feedback regarding this year's packet and suggestions for future materials by completing an evaluation at https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/2016BDPMfeedback. If you have any questions about the materials, please contact Mary Knapp at [email protected]  or Cara Mai at [email protected].

World AIDS Day
World AIDS Day

World AIDS Day was held for the first time in 1988 and has become one of the largest global health initiatives worldwide. It is a day when people come together to commemorate, educate, and show solidarity with the millions living with HIV.

This World AIDS Day, the National Clinical Training Center for Family Planning (CTCFP) would like to announce the release of a new resource for clinicians. The "Sexually Transmitted Infection (STI) Patient Education Tool" is a fact sheet designed to assist clinicians in the exam room when counseling teens and pre-teens on STI information and prevention. This resource is written in an easy-to-read format so young clients can understand symptoms, transmission and prevention for each STI.

Available to download for free - this tool comes in both English and Spanish! Click here to learn more or to download this patient education tool.

To all those who are continuing the conversation, promoting HIV education, and to those in remembrance - we salute you this World AIDS Day.

2014 STD Surveillance Report

2014 STD Surveillance Report Shows Increases in STDs

CDC's 2014 STD Surveillance Report finds that reported cases of chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis have all increased for the first time since 2006. Since 2013, the rate of chlamydia increased by 2.8%, primary and secondary syphilis increased by 15.1%, and gonorrhea increased by 5.1%. Trends show that syphilis is increasing at an alarming rate among gay and bisexual men, and young people aged 15-24 account for the highest rates of gonorrhea and chlamydia. This annual surveillance report only captures a fraction of the true burden of STDs in America because many cases continue to go undiagnosed and unreported.

NIHCM Foundation Webinar on Teen Health

The NIHCM Foundation is hosting a webinar titled Teen Health: Preventing Pregnancy & Promoting Healthy Youth on December 8, 2015, at 3:00 EST. Registration is open now.

  • Colorado's efforts to expand access to long-acting reversible contraceptives (LARCs) among low-income women
  • Research demonstrating that this LARC initiative led to a 5% reduction in births and abortions among teens
  • Targeted outreach to 18 to 19 year olds, who represent the largest segment of teens facing unintended pregnancy
  • Ways to improve access to reproductive health services for adolescents, such as alternative care settings
Why a concentrated focus on adolescent health and youth empowerment are a critical part of winning this battle.
