Gender Based Violence, Health and HIV | | Gender Based Violence, Health and HIV: Intersections and Implications for Clinicians
Date:Tuesday, December 1st, 2015 - World AIDS Day Time: 4:00pm-5:30pm EST, 3:00pm-4:30pm CT, 2:00pm-3:30pm MT, 1:00pm-2:30pm PDT Experiencing intimate partner and sexual violence increases the risk for becoming infected with HIV. Upwards of 50% of abused women report having experienced forced sex - a well-established high risk factor for HIV infection. Once infected, people living with HIV who are also suffering abuse may experience escalation of violence upon disclosure of their status - resulting in potentially lethal outcomes. Intimate partner violence (IPV) can also prevent survivors living with HIV from accessing necessary treatment and care, and the stress caused by abuse can further compromise their immune systems and accelerate the progression of the disease. From HIV prevention to testing, treatment, and long term care, health care providers have many opportunities to reduce the isolation of survivors and increase their options for safety and better health On World AIDS Day, this webinar will briefly outline the intersection of gender based violence and HIV, and describe how providers, particularly those in STI testing and reproductive health settings, can respond to violence and support survivors at risk for contracting or recently diagnosed with HIV. The speakers will also be introducing new patient education and provider training tools for HIV testing and care settings that will soon be available through the National Health Resource Center on Domestic Violence.
