Greetings!

Our furry friends sure keep us busy, what with the fetching and carrying and petting-on-demand. You'd think they were royalty -- or maybe some sort of elected officials, at least. After all: this is America!

Speaking of: in honor of President's Day, we found a fun story to share about one of America's favorite past presidents: an eloquent speaker, and also an animal lover. Can you guess who?

February is also host to Spay Day, an annual event dreamed up by a much loved former film star who won our hearts with her lovely voice, and made us lifelong fans when we found out about her work as an animal advocate. Whoever will it be? Read on, and find out!

Neuter and Spay, it's the Kindest Way!

Spay Day USA was created by the Doris Day Animal League in 1994 to raise awareness about animal overpopulation. The annual observance takes place the last Tuesday in February.

The campaign was taken up by the Humane Society, and has since become a worldwide event. This year, World Spay Day is on February 26, and animal lovers everywhere are finding ways to help.

In New York Animal Care and Control in East Harlem is offering free spays, neuters and other services including vaccinations and microchips.

When it comes to controlling animal over population and unwanted pets, Que Sera, Sera is not the answer! There are many ways to help! Take a stand, and get involved!
Pets Prefer the Presidential Perks

From George Washington to George W., pets have always been part of White House life.

Abraham Lincoln had several: some dogs, a few goats, and he seemed to have a habit of bringing home stray cats. One anecdote tells how Mrs. Lincoln caught Abe feeding Tabby at the table with a fancy gold fork. When she chided him he said: "If the gold fork was good enough for former President James Buchanan, I think it is good enough for Tabby."

So next time someone teases you for spoiling your furry friends, tell them about Lincoln: a great President, and a great animal lover!

Dear Pet Maven Advice Column,

SOMEBODY is spoiled rotten and sleeps atop a very soft pillow atop an already soft bed, and meows for curbside pet-pets whenever he darn well feels like it!

Is this cattitude due to wrong, enabling behavior on the part of the "owner"? -- Furrplexed

Dear Furrplexed
: It's purr-fectly normal and acceptable to spoil your kitty. If you don't, who else will? Just continue to provide him with all the love and treats in the world and he'll return his love to you over and over in a way he deems appropriate, whether that be demanding for attention or lying on your pillow whenever he wants to. Hopefully he'll keep those bad boy antics in abeyance.
