Greetings!

We sincerely hope that everyone made it through Superstorm Sandy unharmed. Many were without power for several days, and many clients were stranded away from home as well when their flights were cancelled.

Our sitters were more than ready for the challenge, however! They took steps to ensure the kitties were safe, with plenty of food and water, and that their pet-parents were kept up to date until they could be reunited. Many of our sitters really went above and beyond, facing communication challenges, braving fierce winds, flying branches, and climbing many many flights of stairs!

We really have so much to be thankful for, not the least of which is you! So it's with that thankfulness in mind we invite you to see what's new and what's on the horizon at The Pet Maven!

Silliness aside: please follow the link and like our page! It's more fun than a day in the park, barking at pigeons. It's more engrossing than a crinkly ball of paper! You'll find the same mix of fun and facts you find in our newsletter, only on Facebook you can join in and share some fun things of your own!

Got some adorable pictures? Post 'em! Have an article you think other pet parents will want to see? Share it! We're sure you'll want to Sit and Stay a while!

What's New, Pussycat?

Our website, for one! Our whiskered elves are working day and night to brighten up our little corner of the world wide web -- with frequent breaks to play with crinkly toys, of course!

Don't worry: we'll keep the clean look and friendly interface, but we're also adding some great new features!

Meet the Sitter: Nechama Karp

Call it fate, or perhaps unmei--the Japanese word for destiny--would be more apropos! Nechama started with The Pet Maven in June 2011, after having hired Helen to groom her Norwegian Forest Cat, Zoey. Their shared love of cats and mutual interest in holistic pet health and nutrition led to Nechama joining The Pet Maven team!

In addition to providing loving care for kitties, Nechama is also a Reiki Master. Reiki Ryoho is a method of energy healing, and, translated from Japanese, Reiki (pronounced ray-kee) means "sacred energy of the universe." A practitioner works with this energy and helps facilitate health and well-being in others. Nechama's love of animals carries over into this work as she works with cats as well as their human friends. Nechama and her own kitties are big fans of raw food diets for pets, along with other natural remedies, and she loves sharing her knowledge with clients and friends, alike!

Save the Stuffing for the Birds

This Thanksgiving, make sure the only critter you stuff is a bird! Pets might love  turkey as much as anyone, but just like humans: a moment on the lips, forever on the ... well ... everywhere!

Here's something to think about: besides the challenges that hauling around those extra pounds can bring, obesity can cause serious long-term health issues. Obese and overweight pets are more likely to develop diabetes, kidney disease, even certain kinds of cancer! For more information, please visit The Association for Pet Obesity Prevention.
