Potter's quick tip
Terror sigillata
Q. I'd love to try applying terra sigillata to some pots, burnishing the pots, and then pit firing them. But I'm intimidated by the complicated process for making terra sig. Please tell me there's an easier way.
A. I'd be happy to . Ceramic Arts Daily recently featured a video in which potter Marcia Selsor demonstrates her "super quick" method for making terra sigillata. Once you've watched it, you'll never be intimidated by terra sig again.
As a bonus, you'll see how Marcia adds feathers and horsehair to her pots for raku firing. Marcia points out in the video that your pot must be bone dry before you apply the terra sig to it. How do you tell if a pot is bone dry? Hold the bottom of the pot to your cheek. If it feels cold, it's not bone dry yet. We highlighted one method for firing pots coated with terra sig in our September Potter's quick tip, " Pop another pot on the barbie?" Charcoal grill firing is a good alternative for those who can't do pit or barrel firings in their yards. Readers, if you have a pottery question for Kay, ask away. And if you want to revisit a past tip, you'll find earlier issues in our studio newsletter archive on the News and Events page of Yourist Studio Gallery web site.
