Gifts of Art is an inspiring program that brings art and music into the hospital. It is a great opportunity for us to show off our work and share the joy we had in making our pieces.
Kudos to Yourist teacher Nancy Bulkley for arranging for this exhibit and to resident artist David Velez Felix for the photography.

If you are interested in learning this technique or simply seeing what it's all about, then you'll want to be at the studio on Sunday, September 21, at 4:30 pm to see Kay demonstrate. This demo is free and open to the public. No camels required.

Potter's quick tip
Pop another pot on the barbie?
Q. I love the look of pit-fired pottery, but I'm afraid I'd freak out the neighbors if I started digging pits and lighting bonfires in my back yard. Is there any other way I can get this look?
A. You bet. If you have a charcoal grill, you can fire your pots in it. No pits or bonfires needed. For instructions, see this article by Sumi von Dassow on Ceramic Arts Daily.
Sumi explains the process from start to finish and also gives several suggestions for producing alternative decorative effects, including burnished and glossy black surfaces.
Readers, if you have a pottery question for Kay, ask away. And if you want to revisit a past tip, you'll find earlier issues in our studio newsletter archive on the News and Events page of Yourist Studio Gallery web site.

Jeff is a Michigan potter who was the sensation of NCECA 2014. A big thank-you to Yourist Studio Gallery Resident Artist Rose E. Gomez for this video.
