If you're already an experienced wheel thrower, take your mastery up a few notches in our intermediate and advanced wheel classes.

Kids' clay. For budding artists, we have a clay class aimed at kids of ages 8 to 11. According to The Washinton Post, creativity, confidence, and problem solving are among the top 10 skills children learn by taking art classes.

Potter's quick tip
Incising clean designs on pottery
Q.When I carve designs on my leather-hard pieces, I get these icky little crumbs of clay that are hard to get rid of. Is there any way to avoid them? A. Yes, with the help of that all-purpose potter's friend, plastic wrap. Smooth a piece of clear plastic wrap, such as a dry cleaner's bag, over the area where you want to carve, then go ahead and incise your design with a pin tool or a pencil. The plastic keeps the tool from raising those annoying clay burrs. You can also use this trick to make clean impressions in clay with stamps.
Readers, if you have a pottery question for Kay, ask away. And if you want to revisit a past tip, you'll find earlier issues in our studio newsletter archive on the News and Events page of Yourist Studio Gallery web site.

A potter of Mata Ortiz
Brrrr, it sure is cold out there. So what better time for a trip south of the border to Chihuahua to watch artist Carlos Carrillo of Mata Ortiz pueblo show us how he makes, decorates, and fires this famed pottery?
As the description for this fascinating video explains, Carlos makes his pots with clay collected from the mountains and decorates them with colored earth using brushes composed of children's hair. He shapes his pots with the back of a hacksaw blade and with a scraper made from a plastic bottle. Carlos fires his pots using dried cow manure. Nothing goes to waste in Mata Ortiz.
