Hi,

Summer's a fading memory and my Crisis Communications class at Brown University is well underway. I enjoy teaching - the students are curious and engaged, while the class preparation allows me to assess the latest and most effective techniques for crisis management, and communicating in general. It's a win-win.

We have some great, relevant guests, too. Tomorrow the class will be joined by Providence Emergency Management Agency director Pete Gaynor, who will discuss his plans to prevent this and this. Next week we'll hear from Lt. Gov. Elizabeth Roberts (a Brown alum) in her capacity as chair of the state's Emergency Management Advisory Council.

Meanwhile, here's our blog post with the outline of the first class of the semester - basically, the core considerations for how to handle a crisis. Let me know what you think!

Best,

One of the summer's big stories was the arrest of former Patriot Aaron Hernandez for first degree murder. We often say in our office that in a crisis your options aren't "good coverage" and "bad coverage." Instead, your choices are more likely "bad" or "worse." Here, the Patriots were able to achieve the merely "bad," which in this case, was actually pretty good.

Here's our blog post explaining how they did it.

Barbara Walters recently welcomed me to her office

Gracious, engaged, genuinely interested - it was easy to see why Barbara Walters is a legend.
I had the opportunity to meet Ms. Walters - who turned 84 yesterday - on a client matter for an hour in her office on the Upper West Side recently. It was certainly one of the highlights of my career.

Collaboration is a great way to increase the reach of an event or a project.
Recently, our client the R.I. Society of Cetified Public Accountants (RISCPA), General Treasurer Gina M. Raimondo and the Capital Good Fund met to talk about expanding financial coaching in the community.

RISCPA members had the opportunity to learn about the Rhode Island Financial Coaching Corps and sign up to become volunteers. The Corps' goal is to match volunteers with financial skills with people looking for ways to make their money work for them.

Finally, a well done piece explaining why we hate to see summer go
