Long-range planners seek community input

The Poplar Bluff R-I School District is soliciting further input from the community in its long-range planning efforts.

For a two-week period beginning on Thursday, Oct. 24, phone calls will be made to 400 households, selected at random, representing a cross-section of the school system's service area.

The 10-15 minute survey, designed by Patron Insight of Kansas City in collaboration with school administrators, will attempt to gauge the public's support for various components of the facilities master plan, which the long-range planning and citizens' advisory committees have been working diligently to finalize by the end of the year.

In general, calls will be placed between 7-9 p.m. on weekdays, and noon-6 p.m. on weekends. The caller ID may show "Market Research Associates" or simply an 816 or 913 area code.

Students shoot off rockets in science class

Poplar Bluff Junior High School students launched rockets assembled in science class, under the instruction of Vic Clark-a two-time building Teacher of the Year-on Friday, Oct. 18, in Morrow Stadium.

The homemade compressed air launchers were made from a motorcycle battery, speaker wire, light switch and irrigation valve, according to the science teacher [below, center]. Constant variable was maintained for angle, pressure and location, while length was manipulated to find out whether the short or long rockets went further.

Science teacher Jodie Berry will analyze the data in class with the students and teacher Jenn Nicolini will assess the experiment.

National Boss Day (Duck Dynasty style)

Oak Grove students and staff surprised Jenifer Richardson, whose birthday was Friday, Oct. 18, by dressing up as Duck Dynasty characters for National Boss Day, signifying that they are "happy happy happy" to have her as their principal.

[Above]: As students line the hallway, Richardson is escorted by Oak Grove parents, Stephanie Brummitt and Ben Godwin, who are posing as Willie and Jase Robertson from the popular reality series.

[Below]: First graders JB Hicks and Katelyn Conover, dressed up as Willie and Korey Robertson of Duck Dynasty, are pictured with their teacher, Trendi Jones.

September Athletes of the Month named

The Poplar Bluff Mules Booster Club has named Poplar Bluff High School junior Bi Nguyen and Courtney Raulston, a senior, the Athletes of the Month for September. Nguyen was selected from the Mules football field and Raulston was chosen from the softball diamond.

Raulston is a softball and soccer player for the Lady Mules. She was an instrumental player in the success of the softball season that just ended. She batted over .330 in the No. 3 spot, contributing offensively with 10 RBIs. Raulston was a great role model to her teammates and will be missed after graduation.

Nguyen has rushed for 1,112 yards in the first seven games of the 2013 season, while averaging seven yards per carry. A school record is in the making. He is an academic achiever as well as a hardworking athlete. KFVS12 selected Nguyen as the 'Athlete of the Week' following the Union football game.

This program to recognize the accomplishments of student athletes was initiated by the Booster Club in March.

Teachers raise awareness for autism

Staci Barker [left] of Oak Grove Elementary School and Joan Lack of the 5th & 6th Grade Center ran as Team H-Man in the Bank of America Chicago Marathon on Sunday, Oct. 13, in honor of a student with autism that both teachers had in class.

The duo raised $3,000 for Autism Speaks, the world's leading autism science and advocacy organization. Lack and Barker trained together for five months prior and both completed the marathon in exactly four hours, 34 minutes and 13 seconds.

Pink-Out Day donation to UCAN sets record

Over $19,000 was raised for the United Cancer Assistance Network-$5,000 more than last year's record-during the fourth annual Pink-Out Day, Poplar Bluff R-I School District organizers announced on Thursday, Oct. 17.

The UCAN fundraiser, spearheaded by Poplar Bluff Junior High teacher Jenn Nicolini and Senior High teacher Hope Conover, has become a community-wide extravaganza through which businesses and Mules fans purchase pink T-shirts to wear to work and later during a football game.

[Above]: Poplar Bluff Mayor Ed DeGaris issues a proclamation to cheerleaders and student council on Friday, Sept. 27, for their Pink-Out Day efforts in support of cancer treatment assistance.
