Students test ROVs, learn basic scuba
On Thursday, Sept. 26, at the Black River Coliseum Aquatic Center and Fitness Center, Poplar Bluff Junior High School gifted students held a successful trial run of the remotely operated vehicles the gifted class assembled over the previous week [above].
The ROV kits were provided via a $1,200 grant secured by R-I SINGS (serving the individual needs of gifted students) instructor Tom Allen through the SeaPerch underwater robotics program under the Office of Naval Research.
[Below]: Prior to testing the underwater robots, diving instructor Tom Humble gave students a basic lesson on breathing underwater with scuba gear on.

Students attend Career Day in St. Louis
On Wednesday, Sept. 25, A total of 75 Poplar Bluff High School students of the Future Business Leaders of America and DECA clubs participated in the annual St. Louis Cardinals Career Day at Busch Stadium.
The field trip included a panel discussion with officials from Fox 2 and KPLR Channel 11 followed by a College Fair. To top off the day, students attended a Cardinals baseball game against the Washington Nationals.
Students were accompanied by DECA sponsor Will Durden, and FBLA sponsors Tracey Hall, Crystal Huddleston and Heather Pullam.

TCC assists with health screenings

Technical Career Center students from instructor Carmen Hoggard's health occupations class assist Health Coordinator Sheryl Talkington in completing annual health screenings of students on Tuesday, Sept. 24, at the Kindergarten Center.

JROTC rifle shooting competition
The Junior Reserve Officers' Training Corps participated in a rifle match on Thursday, Sept. 9, at New Madrid High School.

Health Screenings
Health screenings for tenth graders will take place from 7:45 a.m.-2:45 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 1, at PBHS. Students who require glasses or contact lenses should wear them for the screening.
Meet the Mules II
Godfather's Pizza will host a "Homecoming Meet the Mules" event from 5-7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 2, at the Valley Plaza restaurant. Voice of the Mules, Frankie Casteel of KWOC, will be broadcasting live from the event. Godfather's will donate a portion of their profits to our state champion Cheer Squad to help fundraise for their trip to Gator Bowl.
Homecoming
The first 100 Mules fans through the gates on Friday, Oct. 4, for the Homecoming Football game against Northwest High School will receive a free old school pennant (will feature Mule head logo), courtesy of Brian Taylor with Edward Jones Financial Advisors. Gates open at 5:30 p.m. for the kickoff at 7.

Fall Choral Festival
The Southeast District Fall Choral Festival is slated to take place at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 15, in the Richard D. Kinder Performance Hall at Cape Central High School. The bus will leave PBHS at 4:30 p.m. Students should plan to go to the choir room immediately after school for a brief warm up, pizza, and to change into concert attire before hitting the road. Parents and other choir supporters are encouraged to attend.
Theater Conference
Registration is open through Tuesday, Oct. 15, for students in grades 6-8 interested in attending the Missouri State Junior Thespian Conference on Jan. 11 in St. Louis. There will be workshops on theater and a play will be performed. The cost is $35. For more information, contact PBHS drama teacher Jo Nell Seifert by emailing jseifert@pb.k12.mo.us.
Sarah White 5K
The second annual Sarah White 5K Run & Relay will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 19, at Three Rivers College. For registration details, click here.

The DAR ran a photo recognizing Godfather's Pizza owner Mike Cook for his recent donation to the Poplar Bluff Mules Booster Club.
The SEMO Times announced that the PAT program is open for enrollment.
On Wednesday, Sept. 25, KAIT8 ran a release about PBJHS students assembling underwater robots.
On Sunday, Sept. 29, the DAR covered Pink-Out Day.
