R-I officials lead state technology seminar

A couple dozen school administrators and board members from throughout the state attended Poplar Bluff Schools' breakout session about the district's digital transformation during the Missouri School Boards' Association annual conference on Saturday, Oct. 5, in Osage Beach.

R-I Superintendent Chris Hon led the workshop, sharing our story about partnering with the Mooresville Graded School District in North Carolina to successfully implement the one-to-one laptop initiative, which began at the Junior High this school year, and will continue to the Senior High during 2014/15.

Aiding in the presentation and answering questions were: Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum Patty Robertson, Junior High Principal Bob Case, Media Center Director Jim Thomas, Instructional Technology Facilitators Candace Warren and Valerie Ivy, and Communications Coordinator Tim Krakowiak.

Board members Dr. Cynthia Brown, Dr. Robert Rowland and Gary Simmons also participated in the four-day conference, which is the largest gathering of education leaders in Missouri.

Students receive real world budget lesson

About 100 Poplar Bluff High School seniors got a taste for what it is going to be like maintaining a household budget beyond school during a Reality Fair, hosted by the Poplar Bluff Federal Credit Union in partnership with the business community, on Wednesday, Oct. 2, at Three Rivers College.

Students-also participating from several other schools in the area-were assigned an occupation, family size and income, then they had to visit various booths and make mock purchases of items such as a house, vehicle, insurance policy, utilities, cell phone, groceries, furniture, clothing, day care, student loan and entertainment, plus leave wiggle room for the unexpected.

In cooperation with the Missouri Council on Economic Education, the financial literacy lesson, orchestrated by PBFCU Business Development Specialist Davine Conover, was the largest of the 14 fairs across the state, according to officials.

[Below]: "We'll see those houses on the foreclosure list," joked agent Gary Featherston of Poplar Bluff Realty, as he tried to upsell students lining up to take out imaginary mortgages.

BGC receives gold award for rapid growth

The Boys and Girls Club of Poplar Bluff received a Gateway to Impact Award for having achieved significant increases in average daily attendance and capacity utilization during the Midwest/Southwest Regional Leadership Conference on Wednesday, Oct. 2, in St. Louis.

The gold level award was earned due to the long-standing partnership the BGC has with the R-I School District, sharing facilities to host Power Hour, an after school tutoring program. The ADA increased by about 200 students last year.

Several students named to All-District Choir

Five Poplar Bluff High School Choir members were selected to perform in the All-District Choir concert slated for Saturday, Nov. 9, at Cape Central High School.

The students each prepared an art song which they sang for a panel of judges, then they had to identify key signatures and sight-read two pieces of music during the audition on Saturday, Sept. 28, at Cape Central.

Freshman Lance Hewett and sophomores Christian Cmehil-Warn and Mathew Pickard were named to the 9th and 10th grade All-District Choir, while junior Nicholas Ducote and senior Mara McClintock were named to the 11th and 12th grade choir.
