Congratulations to University of Houston Downtown MBA Program led by Dean Mike Fields. Recognized with the most part-time MBA students by Houston Business Journal.  Also ranked No. 1 on HBJ's list of largest MBA programs based on local enrollment! The program was revamped in 2013 when the school engaged the expertise of more than 100 business experts to develop and define the program.
 
Austin Zhao, China-US Pathway, had clients visiting from Inner Mongolia looking at investing in Houston commercial real estate who were interviewed by Fox and China Daily. Susan Annoura, Annoura Realty, was also interviewed by Fox.

Congratulations to Houston Community College recipient of the 2015 Higher Education Excellence in Diversity (HEED) Award from INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine, the oldest and largest diversity-focused publication in higher education. HCC will be featured, along with 91 other recipients, in the November 2015 issue of INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine.

Linda Toyota, receiving Minority Warrior of the Year award at MWDBE Minority Contractor reception for her passion, innovative ideas, and strategies that have helped small businesses grow beyond the Greater Houston area.  Other members recognized:  Alex Sandoval, Metro Transit, Helen Callier, BradLink.
 
Zel Saccani, Saccani Legal and Business Translations, celebrated fifteen years in business and  passed the rigorous American Translators Association certification exam (http://www.atanet.org/listing/4917)!

Congratulations to Richard A. Huebner, HMSDC, recipient of the Ernest B. McGowan, Sr. Champion of Diversity Award at the 3rd Annual City of Houston Champions of Diversity Awards Ceremony.
 
The Houston SBA District Office announced that SBA lending increased this fiscal year by 17%.  From October 2014 to October 2015 the SBA approved over $3M, in the Houston district, which totaled 1,576 loans for $804 million dollars.  The SBA has helped entrepreneurs and small business owners to expand their businesses and create jobs.  Congratulations to three of the five top SBA lenders who are Chamber members!   JP Morgan Chase, Wells Fargo Bank and BBVA Compass Bank

2016 Houston Community College
Newspring Business Plan Competition Kicks Off


Application Period Opened November 18, 2015. Deadline January 20, 2016.
The annual HCC Newspring Business Plan Competition is an opportunity for startup and existing entrepreneurs to develop focused plans to start or grow their businesses.  This working competition delivers five tuition-free training sessions and two experienced business advisors to each contestant team for the duration of the competition, which runs from February through April.  
 
Each applicant team must either take a prerequisite class at HCC, OR have individual approval, OR have completed the HCC Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Businesses program.  The top five teams win prize money to use toward starting or growing their businesses.  While the prize money is great, the real prize is the tuition-free training and mentoring designed to help all teams focus, differentiate and polish their plans.  Twenty-five teams completed the 2015 competition, so they are all winners!

More than 8.8 million lawful permanent residents (LPRs), who are foreign nationals, have been granted the right to reside permanently in the United States of America.  Yet many of these lawful residents haven't applied for U.S. citizenship for a variety of reasons, and don't always know the benefits, rights and freedoms associated with becoming a naturalized citizen.
